Hey, you don't know me, I have to do without a lot, I don't do anything for myself. I have 4 children and bring home about $900.00 a month! I am not on welfare,I still make sure my kids have everything they need, so don't tell me what sacrifice is!!!! Those that don't know what it's like can always sit back and make fun of those hard working individuals that do, it's just way to easy for you.
Look at the closing of Monroe Academy as another example of how government 'competes' with private business. Obama and his socialist cabal have glibly proclaimed that their government health system will ‘compete’ against private business. As you can see in the education sector, this is just another big lie. The government school system operates with far more funding and assistance than the private education sector ever has. They really have stacked deck versus private schools.
And while government school administrators wring their hands and whine saying. “Oh, if we only had more funding, little Johnny could then finally (after 75 years) read”; the private education system has had to struggle with funding all along. But the truth is, private schools generally produce a better educated student at a significantly lower cost than government schools.
That’s why Monroe Academy has to go down. The high quality of graduate is just too embarrassing for the socialists in control of the government school system. Parents must be empowered to send their children to the school of their choice.
If that means opting out of the government school system, then let that be their choice. Our society is so up on 'choice' these days. Why can't parents have choice in the school for their most precious possession - their children? It is un-American to force parents to pay into a school system whether they want to or not. That's like forcing people to pay for Fox News even though they prefer CNN.
The template for government health care is identical to that of the government education system. Mediocrity, low performance, rationing - and no choice unless you’re wealthy enough to pay a second time (the first time through your taxes). You won’t find Kennedy’s or Obama’s children in the government school system. In fact, very few politicians send their children to government schools. Waddup wid dat?

High quality graduates? I think not...are the teachers even certified at Monroe? Were they even accredited? Monroe County has an excellendt school system and the residents there know it. That's why the school failed...no students! President Obama had nothing to do with it.
I'm amazed at how EVERYTHING is President Obama's fault. Come on, Robert!
The only purpose for private schools in this area was to avoid desegregation. People have evolved and know that the old ways are ridiculous now. Maybe the people who were patronizing this institution should do the same! The school sucked...substandard education only to avoid going to school with the little black kids.
Good riddance to bad rubbish! First Barnesville Academy...now Monroe!
Hip hip HOORAY! Hip hip HOORAY!
It's obvious you're a public school graduate as you cannot even read with comprehension. I mentioned Obama as setting the health care template in the same way as the government 'school' system. I didn't say he was responsible for the decades old socialist government education institution.
The template is mediocrity, low performance, rationing, no choice. I wish I could take every black child and place them in a nurturing educational environment where they could thrive and grow. Instead, they are locked in a prison of uselessness and indoctrination. Public school children cannot read, write, perform arithmetic; nor do they know history, politics, or simple economics. I talked to a recent HS grad who didn't know what the 4th of July was. Another didn't know who Karl Marx was. I'm sure you know who he is.
Let's dig up the facts on the Monroe Government School System and see how many students are reading at grade level. And how they do on skills tests. Let's compare government school student achievement against that of private schools. In nearly every case, private schools blow away government schools. Those are the facts.
As I said before, answer this my government indoctrination center advocate: why do most politicians send their children to private schools?
The public school system was specifically established by socialists; Horace Mann, John Dewey and others for the purpose of creating model citizens - not educated thinkers. Why not read about what it means to be a 'model citizen', Comrade?

Robert,
You need to check on Monroe County's school district stats....students are at or above grade level performance at every school...that district always makes AYP 100% . Those kids are passing the state mandated tests with a great rate. (These are the same tests that private school kids don't take, by the way.) That means that the schools there are doing what it takes. So your assumption that these children can't "read, write, perform arithmetic; nor do they know history, politics, or simple economics" is an ugly untruth.
Those private school kids often come to a public school with accreditation to get into the better colleges & universities with inflated GPAs because of the lack of rigor. I know this was often the case in Monroe. Kids would go to school there until their senior year and transfer to Mary Persons. By the way, how many advanced placement courses did they have? How many foreign language choices? How well did those kids perform on the SAT?
Let's compare apples to apples here. You have so much negativity to spout about public school...make your case for the private schools. I'm not convinced they are or ever were necessary!
And by the way, I am a very proud graduate of the public school system...Did you even attend school at all?
Monroe Academy was unable to compete with either private or government entities as evidenced by their failure to continue in existence. So by allowing "nature to take it course" uncompetitive schools like Monroe Academy fail.
Wouldn't it be nice if the same thing happened with uncompetitive medical insurance companies and health care providers.
Lamar County schools sux cause it is public education. I will home school my kids until the govt shuts me down, and at the pace we are heading that wont be long.
"Sounds like you think govt. should support public and privatr schools. waddup wid dat?"
I love people who cannot even place their name next to their illegible mutterings but let me try to make some sense out of your what shall we call it... comment?
No, government should not support public and private schools. America would be far better off with a system of privatized education venues that offer parents free choice. Parents should pay for school on their own and send their children to the school of their choice. Schools could compete against each other in a free market giving parents options other than the banal failure that government schools represent today. And please - do NOT lecture me on the government school system. It has failed to educate. It is a rousing success in getting socialists elected into government offices.
Just ask any HS grad a few history questions, economic questions, or questions on politics. All you'll hear is the sound of crickets.
Prime example of a great public school system is Clayton County. Waste of money for kids who don't want to learn and parents who just need a place for someone to babysit them. I don't live in Clayton or Lamar county but pay taxes that go toward the school system which is a bunch of crap cause cause we choose not to have kids. You can have 10 kids and send to public schools and never pay a dime into the system and people like me get screwed.
Move to Rock Springs school, St Georges Episcopal school, Liberty Christian Academy, Lamar County schools. State cuts. Budget woes? Obama bad for economy. Be prayer "please stop obama".
I have a public school graduate who can answer most any question you have about American History and many about other histories. He is well versed in govt. and is currently serving in the armed forces defending your right to put him down and assume is anything but intelligent. The issue is the parent's standards, not the school's!!!

I had the greatest misfortune to attend school during the 1960's and 70's when the final phases of school desegregation were completed.
The infinite geniuses here decided to segregate by sex and sent the boys to "black" school and girls to the "white" school.
It was a recipe for disaster that was fulfilled in every way. I attended school for only 28 days my 5th grade year. Riots and unrest kept me home otherwise. Does anyone else remember the rifles on rooftops to keep the downtown from being burned in 1973?
My parents made the decision to enroll me in private school. From the frying pan to the fire. The child of a textile mill worker had no place in the "rarefied" atmosphere of a private educational institution and I was never allowed to forget it. Not for one single day.
It is a genuine shame that tax payer funded education was allowed to deteriorate to a level where the private alternative became the only viable option.
And if anyone is foolish enough to think the situation has improved any, why is it Scoop has not published any further No Child Left Behind Reports after the first one for Lamar County. The report's performance breakout by race is interesting reading. Shame it never makes the paper anymore.
You say, "It is a genuine shame that tax payer funded education was allowed to deteriorate to a level where the private alternative became the only viable option."
Well you can't blame funding. The government schools get their annual increase nearly every year. Take a look at the annual spending on education over the past 4 decades. The numbers are staggering. As is typical with anything government managed, there is never enough money. They have poured billions and billions of dollars into education and what is the result? Uneducated graudates. The education establishment should be sued for malpractice.
By the way, we all know that a certain percentage of students will do well regardless of educational environment. Otherwise, we would have 100% failure on test scores and O graduates. Your ability to graduate successfully says nothing about the government school system.
As an ex-New Yorker, I have to laugh at how you Southerners continue to discuss the government school vs. private school issue as a 'Racial' thing. This is exactly how the manipulators behind the scenes want you think. Sure, some people don't want their children exposed to persons of other colors. They'll get their 'reward' when they stand in front of God Almighty.
But the real reasons to bail out of the government school system are so all encompassing, it's amazing to me that the average person doesn't see it - unless of course you're a secular humanist.
From low test scores, to uneducated graduates, to teaching of evolution and global warming as fact, to molding children to support life styles that are opposed to God's teachings - wow - I say let the socialists have their government school system. And let them pay for it themselves.
But did the Founding Fathers ever support forcing people to pay for something they don't want? The trademark of the socialist is to force people at gunpoint to pay for their big social engineering schemes - like government 'health' care. Most people can't afford to pay twice - like the royalty in government can - as I said previously, government royalty has their own special health care program and their own special social security program. And they send their children to PRIVATE SCHOOLS. You won't see Kennedy's children and grandchildren in government schools. You won't see Pelosi on line with you waiting for health care. And Harry Reid will retire with a great government pension that the private sector has no access to.
Government royalty has plenty of choices. We peasants either place our precious children in the secular humanist socialist government schools or we pay a second time to place them in private schools. Many of us simply cannot afford that. In Wash DC, parents were given the opportunity through a voucher program to place their children outside the government schools and they left in droves.
Obama fixed that. The voucher program there is over.
While I don't agree with all your views, thanks so much for pointing out that private vs. public schools doesn't have to be a racial issue. I look at my child's education, period.
Once I sent my child to camp (Camp Calvin, Hampton) for a week. I checked in on him without his knowing it. He was in the massive pool, the only white kid playing with a bunch of black kids. They were having a blast. I was so proud of my son, who obviously didn't see skin color as anything other than a feature. I was proud of the kids that wanted to play with him. And I was sad that my son was the only one playing with someone of another race. It's really laughable, when you think about it, because if we look at our ancestors, most of us have different races in our genealogy.
He has attended both public and private schools and is now back in public school for high school. The education was the determining factor for each time we made the decision where he should go. We are in Pike, which is doing well for the moment as far as the public schools go, but should that change, he will be pulled out again.
As a teacher myself, who has taught in both public and private settings, my heart goes out to the teachers and staff at Monroe. Of course, I also feel horribly for the students. I hope all of you are able to find a suitable situation for the coming year.
I have read many of your opinion pieces and while I tend to disagree with your conclusions, I can see your opinions are typically thought out and informed.
However, comments like this make me wonder if you don't have some ulterior motive in mind in this thread: "From low test scores, to uneducated graduates, to teaching of evolution and global warming as fact, to molding children to support life styles that are opposed to God's teachings . . ."
I just have to point out to you that Evolution is FACT, unlike Bible based creationism. Want some proof. Look around next time you are out. Check out all those flowers with the many different varieties. Check out all those various breeds of dogs. That is Evolution in action. Not the "Evolution" that so many ill-informed Christians argue against with their simplified "we don't come from Monkeys" nonsense, but what Evolution really describes, which is change in organisms in response to external stimuli like environmental factors or in the case of flower, dogs, etc. intentional manipulation by man through selective breeding. This is Evolution. It is verifiable fact your can see, right now, today.
As for you comment as to God's teachings, could you be a bit more specific about which God you are talking about and why should your (or any one subgroup's) God's teachings be forced on everyone else? And why is it OK for Gov't to support this one religion (no doubt you are talking about protestant christianity) over all the others?
By the way, that government sponsored education is one of the major methods that large groups are socialized in our culture, not through schismatic religious groups or private schools with private agendas that differ greatly in what is acceptable or not. Maybe we would all be better off if everyone was taught different "facts". Maybe we could go back to teaching the Earth is the center of the universe and that everything revolves around this little planet. That is what private education sponsored by Religion gets us. Even worse, when some pointed out the fallacy of Earth centric universe, they were put to death. That is where your philosophy ultimately leads, lots of little groups filled with subjective facts warring against other groups.
Perhaps you would prefer theocracies like Iran and some of the other Muslim countries.
Oh and as for your comment discounting racism as a motivating factor for private school formation, perhaps you were not around during the 70s that a previous poster described. I was living here in Barnesville and went through that time and there is NO DOUBT a major, if not the primary, motivation for Barnesville Academy was Racial. Now of course that was dressed up in the weasely language of higher standards, avoiding mediocrity, maintaining moral values and the like (and I will grant that many of the people actually believed what they were saying) but the deep down underlying factor was prejudice and fear that allowing their kids to go to school with blacks would destroy the world. And this from the same citizens that had black maids and nannies tending their kids and cooking in their restaraunts.
Hi Scott - yes I do have an agenda as you do. My agenda is Christian Worldview based. I do not have any tolerance for global warming claptrap or non-science based evolution fables for humanists. And by the way, the evolution examples you cited are really micro-evolutionary, or really adaptation of species - not true evolution as espoused by the fanatic defenders of psuedo-sciences like global warming and evolution.
Scott- there are many books written that deal with the science of evolution - or lack thereof - but the hysterical proponents of evolution and global warming smother any attempts to have a real dialogue on the subject. Instead, you ram your belief system down the throats of everyone that comes under your authority.
If you don't want to believe in my Lord Jesus Christ, I am more than happy to let you go your own way. But government school system perpetrators insist on indoctrinating their helpless students in secular humanism - a religion of its own.
So really Scott, who is the 800lb bully around here?
I am in agreement with you on global warming. I think history shows the cyclical nature of global weather through the alternating ice ages. That said, I believe it is pretty obvious that humanity's pollution has certainly made this cycle worse. And personally I think even if there were iron clad proof that humanity was totally responsible it is far too late to expect humans to give up the luxuries of civilization that cause the pollution.
As for your comment about Micro Evolution you are correct. And it is the "adaptation of species" that you mention that is precisely the key point of Evolution. Those organisms that develop characteristics that help them do better or live longer tend to mate more often and therefore the whole population gradually changes to reflect those more successful characteristics. That is Natural Selection, which happens over long stretches of time
And this is the Theory of Evolution.
And in regards to humans it states that the same type of thing happened with the distant ancestors of humans (not apes by the way). And even more than physical differences, there were social and intellectual characteristics which enabled some humans to prosper and others die out. Things like developing verbal and written communication, developing cooperation rather than competition, banding in groups rather than individuals or families; use of tools, documented learning passed through written materials multi generationally vs how other animals pass information from parent to offspring. So you see examples in life today of this very process.
So the base level Evolutionary Theory says all life on Earth came from Earth--the Biblical theory says Man was made from Earth by God--pretty similar, both things says comes from the Earth. Why can't the Biblical fable of creation be talking about God using Evolution to form all we see? This is just as plausible, to say the least, as the Christian Worldview that says all this happened basically overnight. And to me, assuming God spoke to the writers of the Bible why would he have spent volume I describing evolution when the key point is that He set the forces in motion. And that is from a Christian viewpoint, although I could also easily see the argument that there was no overall controlling entity--but that is a far different debate than whether a Fact is a Fact and a Belief is a Belief.
All good commentary! And great stuff to discuss over coffee, green tea, or an adult beverage. Everything you wrote is worthy of discussion and legitimate debate. But discussion and debate does not occur in the government school system. Global warming and evolution are taught as fact. Neither are fact. Both originate from a belief system and worldview that is non-Christian.
As a Christian, I cannot reconcile hatred of the people God made with any concept of an after-life in the Kingdom of God. God made all the different skin colors for His pleasure - just like He made all the different colors of flowers in the fields. Do racists think that God is ging to say, "Well done good and faithful servant - you hated and cursed the people I made?" I believe that haters will stand in judgement. What do you expect to see in Heaven? I think you'll see representatives from all the different colors residing there in peace and harmony in the presence of Jesus Christ.
The concept of alternatives to government schooling are perverted with shouts of 'racism'. Make a better America - pull our black skinned children out of the government schools and place them in a meaningful and productive learning environment. That's when you will see a major change in the status of black people in society. They will live in victory - not as pawns to a manipulative federal government.
As a upcoming MP senior and former student of Monroe Academy i agree with Public School Advocate. I left Monroe because of the ignorant teachers and the inflated heads of the students. Its all about who has the most money and the education sucked. When i arrived at MP i realized i was way behind the other people in my grade level and im lucky i left when i did. Good riddance to Monroe and maybe the kids will find a brighter future at Mary Persons. Go Bulldogs!
Perhaps you were one of my classmates at MA. It is interesting to note that your grammar and punctuation leave something to be desired!
Do not worry- we wouldn't want to bring our inflated heads (full of knowledge) into those halls at MP. Never in a million years- so don't expect to see us!!! We will probably all go to other private schools in our area.
im not trying to write an essay here b@#%$. i am very positive i could write a very effective one if desired... bluntly i just dont have time for people who think their S*%$ dont stink. lets see you pass those graduation tests with that apparently inflated head full of knowledge. you dont know the half of it. please dont walk in MP halls. that would be a disgrace. keep paying that money for poor education. when you get to the real world you will understand sheltered one.
If you simply look at facts: the government school system costs more and educates less. These are the facts. Just go look it up yourself. Look at the statistics and test scores and you will quickly discover that private schools and homeschools outscore the government schools by significant margins. And they do it at a far lower cost.
But- if you prefer to sit under a system that doesn't educate but makes you feel more important - fine! Sit there.
Please don't suggest that the government school system is somehow better than the alternatives. The facts clearly say different. And remember, the socialist template says it's OK to use government hob nailed boots to force others to pay and participate in a system that many would avoid if they could. A truly American education system would let the parents decide where their children will be educated and have a say in what they will be taught. That's American. The socialist template is: "You will go to the school we tell you to go to... and your children will be taught what we want them to be taught..." Whether it reflects your values or not
The socialist template removes the citizen's right to choose and replaces it with government tyranny. But undoubtedly, you were never taught any of this in your government indoctrination center you call a 'public school.' If you were taught history, politics, and economics, you would clearly see that the government school system is really based on a european socialist model that seeks to create pliable citizens and not critical thinkers.
The only disgrace is that people who don't have a lot of money are forced to suffer through a mindless 12 years of nothingness.
Before you can even take yourself seriously you will have to learn to show effort in all that you do. We are creatures of habit, and success is a learned behavior. I can think of several friends of mine that left MA to go to MP because they couldn't cut it. I tutored some of the precious MP "AP" students. My cousin attended MP as well. Trust me when I say their books were no better than ours. As for being accredited: MA was in fact SACS accredited. No one can be taught if they don't want to learn.
Monroe needed to close down. The teachers were not equipped to teach. The books were not up to date. It was like the money the parents paid for you to go down there was a guarantee for you to pass and go on to the next grade.
Oh - you mean like the government schools? Sounds similar to me. But - you're right about one thing. The government schools give you spankin new textbooks full of revisionist claptrap useless for learning. I prefer textbooks from 50-100 years ago. They actually can teach you something.
Statistically, private schools and homeschools do better at teaching and preparing students for adulthood than government schools - and at far less cost.
I graduated from MA in 1987 and while I cannot speak of the education received since, I can say that it was top-notch back then. 100 percent of graduates went to college with a 96% graduation rate. Among others included were WestPoint, Naval Academy, Harvard, Yale, Brown, Duke, Vanderbilt, North Carolina, Columbia, GA Tech and MIT appointments and graduates to just name a few. It opened doors to colleges that otherwise I would not have been able to attend. This whole biblical and racial commentary was not taught nor discussed by the administration and teachers at MA. I really think most of you who are anti-private schools are somewhat bitter that there is another choice for some and not attainable to others. Monroe was a fine institution of learning. It allowed me to virtually enter college at an Ivy League college out of high school as a sophomore and graduate in three years. Not many public schools would have pushed someone of average intelligence like me to that level of being over prepared for freshman year at a top notch college or university. While some may not like schools like Monroe Academy, it served Forsyth and its surrounding communities well for 40 years. May God rest Mr McMillan's soul for give some the opportunity that they might not have otherwise had. Go Stangs!

As a teacher myself, who has taught in both public and private settings, my heart goes out to the teachers and staff at Monroe. Of course, I also feel horribly for the students. I hope all of you are able to find a suitable situation for the coming year.
Enjoy your public school "edukation."
Statistically, private schools and homeschools do better at teaching and preparing students for adulthood than government schools - and at far less cost.
