Gordon unveils historical markervideo

In ceremonies at 10 a.m. yesterday at the southeast corner of old Summers Field, a state historic marker commemorating the 1938 visit by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to Barnesville was unveiled.

Thanks, Anthony McCalla for making this possible for our community, and thanks for showing what young people can do if they put their minds to it! Just another good example of the benefits we enjoy by having Gordon College in Barnesville.

This is great. Now we need a historical marker commemorating the spot in Barnesville where the first ever high school football game in Georgia was played. On December 12, 1896 Gordon Institute beat R.E. Lee Institute of Thomaston 54-0 on a field that was located somewhere in the vicinity of where the Herald-Gazette office is now on Greenwood Street. Let's get this going.

I can remember as a kid growing up in Barnesville, my Aunt Irene Pruitt telling me the story of her and Uncle Edgar walking from Church Street to Summers Field to see FDR. She always had a picture of him in her living room. Too bad that this important location will probally become a parking lot.

I believe Dr. Jackson's family has 8mm film of the whole visit. I saw it a couple of times in the 50s.

Thanks for a very interesting article and video and to Anthony McCalla for spearheading the effort to get the marker. I attended the speech in 1938 at the age of 5. My family and I sat on the field near the Gordon Band. I was more imprssed by the band than the ceremony, especially the base drum. I do remember seeing the president in the speaker's stand and it was very good to have electricity when we got home I later attended Gordon Junior College and was in the Gordon Band.
