The inauguration of the President of the United States is always an historic occasion, but when Barack Obama is sworn in today as our 44th president and our first African-American president it will be especially so.

Obama is biracial, and has a direct connection with Africa.
He obviously identifies more with black America than with white America at this time in his life.
My folks live here in rural Georgia. I was raised in rural Georgia. But shortly after college I moved to a very large, urban area and I must admit that I identify more with the liberal, northern mindset than the typically conservative, southern. If I were to run for office though I would be a progressive republican because that is what I identify with as a grown man.
I have to wonder if folks like you 'anonymous 8:58am' want him to be white so that you can be at ease with perhaps your satisfaction in his becoming president. Perhaps somewhere deep inside you see him as a black man that is about to be the leader of the free world and you cannot accept that to some degree - whether by tradition, party lines, personal hangups, etc. Whatever the case, Obama did not choose to be african-american. His father is Kenyan. Last I checked Kenya is in the eastern region of Africa right near the horn. His mother is of white U.S. stock which makes him, by birth, African-American.
I doubt he is embarrassed at all.
The longer answer and still up for debate is that he may have chosen to exploit his african-american heritage to go out for the minority vote which was sure to arrive in hoards (when asked and encouraged to) to vote against an old, white guy. That is politics 101.
That had to be the largest group of stupid people that has ever gathered in one location.
To brave that kind of cold - they would have to have been out of their minds.
We live in the greatest country on Earth.
I'm proud to be an American. End of story.
It does not matter if you do or don't agree with President Obama, he is the leader chosen by the American people. You should support him and next election vote for or against him on what he did or did not do for the American people, not because you don’t like his skin color.
It is not every day that we have a significant historical event and yet we have those that think it wasn't much to think or talk about. Time will not wait for you to get on the train, it is leaving the station.
All those soldiers and civilians that died in the fight for freedom here and abroad probably did not know any of the people affect by the issues they were fighting about, but they gave their lives in the defense of it.
Living abroad much of my life gave me a better perspective on the daily struggle of many and the knowledge that America has to deal with the ignorance of a few. A good steward has the right to express an opinion, but the obligation to respect the decisions of those appointed to lead.
President Obama is a very smart man. He wants to work for you and your next door neighbor. He wants to ensure your children’s children are not suffering for our mistakes.
Solzhenitsyn's response when questioned about the decline of modern
culture.
A Russian author, Solzhenitsyn was imprisoned for eight years by
Joseph Stalin, as he described in his autobiography, Les Prix Nobel:
"I was arrested on the grounds of what the censorship had found in my
correspondence with a school friend, mainly because of certain
disrespectful remarks about Stalin, although we referred to him in
disguised terms.
A further basis for the 'charge' were drafts of stories and
reflections which had been found in my map case."
He wrote "The Gulag Archipelago" for which he was awarded the Nobel
Prize for Literature, 1970, but the Communist government did not
allowed him to leave the country to accept it.
Finally, under international pressure, the Soviet Union expelled him
on FEBRUARY 13, 1974.
The following year in Washington, D.C., Alexander Solzhenitsyn
warned:
"I...call upon America to be more careful...because they are trying
to weaken you...to disarm your strong and magnificent country in the
face of this fearful threat-one that has never been seen before in
the history of the world."
