The Lamar County sheriff’s office has begun a new program targeted at young drivers. STOPPED (Sheriff’s Telling Our Parents and Promoting Educated Drivers) aims to alert parents of their children’s driving habits.

I don't understand this. If they give out tickets to kids breaking trafic laws the parents would find out. Is this so they don't have to give out tickets to certain kids with stickers? they will just call the parents instead? It doesn't make sense to me. If a teen gets stopped give them a ticket. If they weren't breaking the law don't stop them. The only way i see a sticker working is if private citizens can call about bad drivers. The police should be writing them up.
Contrary to belief, cops don't always like giving tickets. More than likely if a child gets a ticket the parents will end up paying it anyways. I think this is an excellent idea and maybe it will make the kids think a little before driving and making stupid mistakes. Some teenage drivers around here are ridiculous drivers. Maybe it will help save at least one vehicle accident or teenager death. I remember getting a ticket when I was just starting out driving and never even told my parents about it. I paid it off and they didnt find out till years later (once I grew up and told them). Good job law enforcement. Be prepared for negative comments here because everything is seen in a negative light on this blog, but know there are 3X as many out there that will support something like this.
Spare me the "cops don't always like giving out tickets" line. I got a ticket for going 2 miles an hour over the speed limit once. I got pulled over and almost ticketed for swerving into an emergency lane to miss debris in the road. If it hadn't of been for my mom being in the car with me I probably would have gotten that ticket. So you can't feed me that line. I have been in LC for way to long.
The stopped stickers should have ID numbers on them for people to call Law Enforcement and make a complaint and then notify the parents that way. Law Enforcement doesn't see everything Believe me. They never do anything about the people flying up and Down Zebulon Road in Milner. That place is a regular dragway.
They do have ID numbers on them. I just received mine in the mail and it looks like they each have a different number on them. Im sure that they are linked at the Sheriff's Office and I bet that if you call that ID number in then they can notify parents that way too.
If you are older than 16yrs of age and get a ticket you could just pay the fine and never mention a word of it to your parents.this sounds like a good idea to me.
This sounds like a great idea to me. I have a 16 year old and I am more than sure if she is doing something wrong, to get pulled over, she will not tell me because that would be the end of her driving privileges. Please, by all means, call me.
I got a letter in the mail yesterday about this. My child is a high school student and is currently driving. He wanted me to sign the opt out form, but he'll be right happy with displaying that stopped sticker or he wont have to worry about driving anymore. I'm glad to see something like this because I've always worried about how he drives.
Depending on a 1 in 1000 chance he will get pulled over is silly if you are all that worried. If you are worried about how he drives put your phone number on his car. You can also tuck a GPS under his seat. It will tell you where he goes, what time, and what his peak speed is.
