Wow...I thought with Starbucks changing their mind about B-ville, that Red Rooster would stay strong...hopefully another coffee shop will come along. It was a nice addition to the atmosphere of downtown.
It's easy to see why it closed. After ownership changed they installed a TV set blasting Fox News audio. No one wants to eat with negative drama blasting inches from your ears. A friend and I lunched there for years and never had stale dry bread until ownership changed. Then two days in a row both of us, he with white and me with wheat, had dry stale bread. When a business is successful the last thing a new owner should do is abruptly change how things are done or the atmosphere.
I completely agree. The new owner had no regard for quality, in food or atmosphere. The cute little arty gourmet coffee house Barnesville embraced was replaced with blaring big screen "news" that completely destroyed the quiet, comforting ambience, and the employees had bad vibes...unhappy employees equal unhappy customers. Sorry, but Red Rooster hung itself. I gave them two shots after the new owner took over, each time was worse than before. I would love to see it reopen with new, kinder-gentler ownership!
Drama, I am sure you understand nothing about that huh? lol as far as the tv goes people usually do sit and drink coffee and watch the news!!!! wow you must either be young, or a pot stirrer!! DRAMA!!!
That is it in nutshell. The business fell off and the new owner was trying to make it better. The old owner sold it because it wasn't making any money. Doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure this out folks!
And..no it was not due to stale bread.
If the TV had been blaring someone should have complained...and if you ask me, that sounds like a former employee who didn't like to get FIRED.
I'm going to miss both places.
I hope another coffee shop will come in, I need me my caramel creamice!
And as for Georgia Chic, the owner was a delightful lady.

I only bought one cup of coffee from Red Rooster, about a year and a half ago. It was in the morning and had obviously been reheated from the previous day. As much as I would like to see a good coffee shop in town, I cannot say I am all that surprised.
well I have to say I will surly miss it, But the new owners tried hard but the past managers had already put nail in the coffin!!!! It was so much cleaner and uncluttered, But its hard to make a ship float that already was taking on water!!!
Rest in peace Red rooster!!!
As far as thr Rooster goes, it can be purchased!!! If you would like to keep it open !!! The economy is so bad right now that people are really watching their money, you can blame stale bread or a T.V !!!But the truth is we are in some hard times, the rooster had a lot more fans then enamies, but as always you are always gonna get the negative people who love to show their I.Q. and give their opinion... Ha Ha...
Becky Blount is the reason red rooster did so good.Becky is a beautiful person in and out.She does a very good job at everything she does.Becky is RED ROOSTER.Myself and Barnesville miss her and we wish her the best in everything she does.Raven was also so delightful. Those girls had a good thing going.I miss them more and more everyday.Hope GOD will bless them with as much as he has blessed me.Meeting and knowing them was a blessing.
I really like Becky , But if it was doing so good she would have been open more and would not have sold it!!!! As far a Raven goes, I will not comment!!!
I do not know Becky personally but I do have to say I went in there a few times and both times, she was very put out and rude. Not tring to start any trouble just stateing how I was trated when I went in to get a cup of coffee, she seem very pre-occupied and did not have time for me. not very good for buisness.
Becky was a single mother raising three children and running a coffee shop on her own. If she seemed put out. Maybe someone should've asked her if she was ok. Maybe someone shouldve taken the time out of their own busy lives to think past their own agendas to the person making their tall white rooster.
You people here talking about 'should've been better managed' or about stale bread or even the TV, have any of you owned a business? I would guess most of you haven't a clue as to what it takes to run a business. If it were so easy, you'd probably be doing it. If you have run a business, maybe you had enough of a profit margin a caveman could run it. But most of us don't. We struggle everyday, just to serve you. You don't really think we're making a killing, do you? If we were, we'd be on an island in the Carribean, instead of working our butts off trying to serve you. But, this is the thanks we get for it all, to hear all this negativity from you.
I have to agree with you, But thats whats wrong with this world!!! People are so quick to judge, but are the same people that will not support the local buisness..I guess they will be happy when our little town is gone!!
I have been going to Red Rooster since it opened. I had hoped the new owner would've left a good thing alone. And I did voice my concerns to the changes made. We are a small town and don't handle change well. As for the employees... most tried to make the best of the situation and most were friendly. I only new one that really had a bad attitude and liked to talk about RR drama. She was replaced not long ago and I thought that would be a good thing. I know I was told when the new owner took over that nothing was going to be changed.. the staff was going to stay and he wanted to remain behind the scene. But that didn't last long and when the changes started the customers started going. It's kinda like taking the pigs out of Pastime... I just wouldn't be the same!
Not handling change well and not handling change at all are two totally different things. The fact is change is everywhere...all around us. you look in the mirror and you see changes everyday. You look in the paper and see changes everyday. Even seasons change. Tehre is a time and a place for everything. It's foolishness to think that change will not happen here just because we are a small town. Change is a constant. You can make the choice to change or become completely useless and obsolete.
I'm going to miss Red Rooster. I was a frequent customer under both owners and think they had a good little business. Maybe one of you anons will put your money where your mouth is and reopen it.
Why not. Keep on gettin while the gettin is good right?
Maybe within a couple of more years these run down houses that bring down Barnesville will get taken from the current owners and get a face lift. Its ashamed that some of these idiots wont even buy 3 bales of pinestraw that will make their own property look 10x better.
Hello Barnesville,
I worked at the Red Rooster, and let me give you ALL a little insight on the company (and both the owners). Becky was a hard-working wife and mother. She poured her heart and soul into the Red Rooster. Her hard work and dedication showed! And Cliff loved the coffee shop enough to pick up where Becky left off. He changed a few things and tried to make a successful go of things. Sometimes things do not pan out the way we want. I am sure both Becky and Cliff can relate to this.
Now, let's address stale bread, TV, drama, bad employees, etc... The Red Rooster did not make the bread--they ordered it from a bread truck. The stale bread was NO way a result of a cost cutting expenditure. It just happened. The company the bread was bought from was notified and later lost the bread contract. The coffee shop then began to buy bread locally from Ingles. The very same store most people in Lamar County shop from for their personal homes. The TV was in fact a huge cut into the owner’s pocket. He only tried to enhance the atmosphere of the coffee shop. He did not mean to take away from it. And for as many people that did not like the TV--there was 2 times that many that loved it. Case closed.
All the new employees (after the new ownership) tried very hard to learn the coffees (and all the usuals) and recipes. They were also under a strict deadline. Barnesville Buggy Days was right around the corner. We did great during Buggy Days.
Now onto the drama--It happens. Adults sometimes act like children. There were a lot of rumors about a lot of people. Most were just that, rumors; they were started by people who have nothing better to do. Sad.
Raven loved that coffee shop; maybe more that both the previous owners. She got up early, dressed for work, and was there to greet you with a fresh pot of hot coffee almost every morning. That store enabled her to work and help provide for her family. She loved the job. And many of us are unable to say we truly love what we do for a living--She was lucky. Her departure from the Red Rooster was a sad thing for her and many others.
But things must go on. Sheryl, the new management, tried her best. I am sure. But in the end, the coffee shop is now closed and numerous people are without a job. The drama that enveloped the store still lives on only in the minds and hearts of those who wished nothing good to come out of that quaint little shop on the corner of Market and Main. I hope that soon someone else may have the good fortune to able to open another coffee shop here in Barnesville. Good Luck to that person(s) and good luck job hunting to all those that lost their jobs (including the former employees of Ga. Chic).

I'm sorry your resturant closed. It is not that for every two people that love something one person dislikes it. It is whether something drives more people away than it attracts. Political signs are a good comparision. If a political sign goes up at a business that 66% of the people love and 33% of the people can't stand the business is likely to lose 33% of its customers. All of them would have stayed if there was no political sign of any type. It's always many small things that go wrong.
I am sorry to hear the Red Rooster has closed. When my daughter and sisters visited from out of town, we loved to go to the RR for their delicious chicken salad. The staff was always polite and attentive. God Bless All of You.
As a regular RR lunch customer I can say without question the lowering of food freshness and the blaring TV set is what made me go away. The noise from TV's is why I stopped going to Chicken Run, American Pie (two loud TV sets on different channels), and finally Red Rooster. I can't think of any restaurants that do well with loud TV sets except sports bars during popular games.
Interesting, when I went into the RR, the TV was always muted and I could check out the news scrolling across the bottom if I chose, or turn away if I didn't.
We all know that change seems to be unsettling for people here, but I am always willing to give new ownership a chance.
If I was there less than before, and I don't think I was, it would only be due to the state of the economy. Like most of us, something had to be cut back, and usually it's one of the luxuries in life.
As for GA. Chic, it caters to the early morning crowd, and I'm not that person, so my business or lack thereof I don't think affected them. Probably so many people out of jobs now did affect them though. 3 years ago when I passed them while on my way to my job in Griffin I would always notice the parking lot was jammed and it looked like a crowd stopping for a biscuit while on the way to work. Sadly, the unemployment level has probably put them under also.
If we don't want to see more businesses leave our downtown area, we need to show some support for them. Even one small purchase adds up.
Did anyone notice Carter's Drug Store's 3/50 campaign? The idea is to spend a total of $50 spread between 3 businesses in our town per month.
If we all pitch in, we can make a difference.
Sometimes it's not that the bussiness isn't turning a profit it's but do I want to continue to do this. There is much more to life than making money although once in my life you couldn't of convienced me other wise. The RR had it's hayday and the GA Chic had its gathering. We live, we die, we cry and sometimes we have a few laughs. Life goes on for the young.
Perhaps you are confusing Georgia Chic with Big Chic? If folks were eating outside of Georgia Chic that would have put them either in a parking spot or in the driveway of Dairy Queen. Hmmmmm...
The crowd just moved over to the Dairy Queen for breakfast. The folks outside are in the smokers only lounge and they get their food from the DQ and then go over to their same table and eat.
I was given Red Rooster gift cards for Christmas. I tried to use them twice but was told their machine was malfunctioning. The business should have honored the cards before the doors closed. Perhaps if the business was struggling and knew they might possibly go out of business, it would have been better not to have sold the cards.
This is true the machine did go down, we tried everything to get it back, bad I know but they we do in tend to honor every dollar on the gift cards, when we get a statement from the bank well will refunnd 100% of your money so hold onto the card...
I hate to see more business in Lamar county bite the dust.. This town is failing in its economic efforts to employ the citizens of Lamar county. Its sad.
I really liked the Red Rooster and so did all my friends. They knew customers by name and order, food was fast and good, it was always quiet, and the staff was friendly. It's sad to see it go. I confess I stopped going there when things started changing inside. It didn't feel the same. Now I wish I would have given it more of a chance even though it did not feel the same.
Excuse me? Why do you still live here? Is it time to move? I love it here. If you aren't happy here then it might be time to consider a move. I've been in Barnesville since 1978 and love it. I wouldn't consider living anywhere else.
someone open up a respectable game room like how Petes pool room in griffin used to be. No junk. No fighting. Come in and shoot pool, buy food and drinks and have a good time. I used to run a pool room years ago here about 2000 and there would be people packed inside and people outside waiting to shoot pool.
If i had an abundance of money i would do it but i have too many irons in the fire right now. Not really any money to be made since the "machines" were outlawed in Georgia but it will pay one persons salary and the utilites.
Ok so "under new management" does not ruin buisnesses, they take them over so you can have somewhere to go!!! Now if you do not go and help support them and express your likes and dislikes how can they survive? I learned along time ago when running a buisness, the public will make you or break you, can't run one without them! so if there is something here you like, but have some dislikes just express them that way maybe they can fix the problems and continue on and we will have less closings. Remember Under new management means they need our support and help.. Or our little town will be nothing but junk stores.
This just shows how everyone's great Gordon College helps our economy. You would think if the college made that much difference, the businesses would have closed during the summer. It would be far better for our economy if we improved the local Tech schools. Maybe with some skilled workers we could get some industry. There is not a need for 50 nurses or 40 Mathematics graduates in the local area. Not to put down the college, I went there for a while and there are some great People their. I went to another College that had a better Medical Program and a great technical program. They didn't have dorms or a sports program and they became a four year school long before Gordon. They also offered programs that would support the local businesses (mostly industrial).
The word is that the Gordon Students who live on campus are required to pay something along the lines of $600 per quarter for the college meal plan.
So, if this is true, there's Gordon College contributing to the economic health of our town- NOT.
I BEGAN WORKING A THE RED ROOSTER ABOUT A WEEK BEOFRE CLIFFORD GILES BOUGHT THE SHOP FROM BECKY BLOUNT. RAVEN WAS THE MANAGER THEN, BUT LATER SHE WAS FIRED. SHE WAS REPLACED BY CHERYL CHESTER. A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE BREAD, TV, AND BAD EMPLOYEES. WELL AS STATED PREVIOUSLY BY MY GOOD FRIEND AND CO WORKER MELISSA CHAPMAN, THE BREAD SITUATION WAS NO FAULT OF OUR OWN. THIS IS WHY WE FIRED OUR BREAD GUY AND STARTED BUYING FROM INGLES. THE TV, WELL THAT WAS A DUMB MISTAKE ANYWAY YOU YOU LOOK AT IT. I WORKED AT THE SHOP AT LEAST 5 DAYS A WEEK AND ALMOST EVERY SATURDAY MORNING FROM SEPTEMBER UNTIL IT'S CLOSE. THE ONLY CUSTOMER TO EVER "WATCH" THE TV WAS A GUY WHO OWNED A RATHER LARGE BUSINESS IN TOWN (I'M NOT GOING TO MENTION HIS NAME, JUST FOR THE SAKE OF PREVENTING CONTROVERSY). NOW ON TO THE EMPLOYEES: AFTER BECKY LEFT RAVEN HICKOX WAS THE BACKBONE OF THE SHOP, WITH HER GREAT SISTER MISCE HELPING, THE STORE WAS MAKING A RE BOUND. NICK WAS A GREAT EMPLOYEE TOO. I JOINED ABOUT 1 WEEK BEFORE BUGGY DAYS. SHORTLY AFTER I WAS HIRED, ABBY GARREN WAS HIRED. SHE WAS GREAT. WE LOVED OUR JOBS. WHEN RAVEN LEFT, THE RED ROOSTER LEFT WITH IT. MISCE AND NICK LATER LEFT ALSO. THIS IS WHEN CLIFF BROUGHT IN CHERYL CHESTER, SHE IS THE ONE WHO HAS PROBABLY BEEN POSTING ALL THESE COMMENTS ABOUT THE SHOP. SHE ULTIMATELY WAS THE STRAW THAT BROKE THE CAMEL'S BACK IN MY OPINION. SHE DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO RUN A BUSINESS AND FRANKLY I THINK SHE DIDN'T CARE. THIS IS A PEOPLE'S BUSINESS AND WHEN YOU AREN'T NICE OR ATLEAST COURTEOUS TOP YOUR CUSTOMERS, THEY LEAVE AND NEVER COME BACK. AFTER ALL OF THESE DEPARTURES CHERYL HIRED 2 OF HER FRIENDS DONNA EVANS AND KELLIE LIVELY TO COME WORK FOR US TO HELP WITH THE LACK OF EMPLOYEES. THESE 2 GIRLS WERE GREAT! I'M NOT GOING TO LIE TO YOU, I KNEW THE STORE WAS IN BAD SHAPE, BUT WE ALL WERE TRYING TO MAKE IT WORK, SOME MORE THAN OTHERS. IN MID-DECEMBER CHERYL ANNOUNCED SHE WAS LEAVING THE RED ROOSTER. WE HIRED A NEW MANAGER NAMED DEIDRA KERCE. SHE WAS A GREAT PERSON. SHE HAD A LOT OF GOOD IDEAS FOR THE STORE. LIKE I SAID EARLIER I WORKED EVERY SATURDAY MORNING AT THE SHOP, I LEFT THAT SATURDAY, JANUARY 16TH AT 2P.M. AS ABBY GARREN WAS COMING ON FOR THE NIGHT SHIFT. THAT WAS SATURDAY AFTERNOON. I WAKE UP SUNDAY MORNING WITH A TEXT MESSAGE ON MY PHONE FROM CHERYL SAYING THAT WE HAVE ALL LOST OUR JUBS BECAUSE CLIFF IS CLOSING THE STORE. THIS BY FAR IS THE MOST SPINELESS DIRTY THING I THINK I'VE EVER WITNESSED. A TEXT MESSAGE? REALLY? THEY COULD HAVE AT LEAST HAD THE NERVE TO CALL, OR HELL HAVE A MEETING TO LET US ALL KNOW WE MIGHT NEED TO BE LOOKING FOR JOBS, BUT CHERYL AND CLIFF HAD OTHER JOBS SO THEY WEREN'T IN ANY DANGER OF LOSING ANY INCOME, BUT ABBY, DONNA, DEIDRA (WHO HAD JUST QUIT HER OTHER JOB TO BE OUR NEW MANAGER) AND MYSELF ( A STUDENT) WERE ALL JUST LEFT OUT ON IT, AND HAD TO BE TOLD THROUGH A TEXT MESSAGE. I BELIEVE THAT WHOLE THING SHOULD HAVE BEEN HANDLED A LITTLE BETTER. AM I MAD I LOST MY JOB? NO. I'M SAD THAT THE SHOP IS GONE, THAT USED TO BE A FUN JOB.
P.S. AT LEAST I REMEMBER THE RECIPES SO I CANMAKE THEM FOR MYSLEF AT HOME!!! :]
