Michael Stringer was armed with these two AK-47 assault rifles when he charged deputy Joe Buice, shooting him in the cheek. Stringer was shot dead at the scene.
I see nothing wrong except the fact that he was undergoing psychiatric treatment. Here we go again with the "assault weapon" thing.
Who cares how many rounds he had. I personally have quite a bit more than that. The price of ammo was real low before the Obama campaign became a real threat. The 7.62x39 rounds went from about 80-120 bucks per 1000 rnds up to 245 bucks per 1000 rnds at the cheapest. This gun is absolutely no different than the average deer rifle except it is a little less powerful. It is a good made gun that will take a lot of abuse. So are the SKS firearms.
I feel quite positive that these guns fall into all of the 922r compliance requirements. It gets kinda tricky but there is more to it. Even if they didnt fall within specs all he had to do was change a couple of parts to US made parts and the guns would be 100% legal and the crime still would have happened.
These guns are very fun to shoot or to plink targets. Anything from an ink pen to an army tank can be dangerous in the wrong hands
I hope Joe gets well soon and Im glad they got this nutcase off the streets and off the planet for that matter.
This man had more going on in his life that you all know. No excuse for what he did. We may never know the whole story. I hate when other people are dragged into someone's troubles. Nothing is ever as bad a few days later as it looks at first, too bad he will never know that. I am glad the officer is recovering. Before you people say stupid things about my comment, no I am not friends with this person or family.
Well I pretty much agree with you. Truthfully it does not matter if a person has one round or 2000 or none if they are going to do something they will. If they have no guns it does not matter when someone goes off of the deep end their is nothing anyone can do, but we can be thankful that Joe Buice is still with us. Thank goodness for the law enforcement.
I agree with 3.2. If a person is bent on harming or killing another person they will use whatever they can get their hands on. Do you remember the guy who walked in a school and bashed in a little girl's head with a claw hammer? Should we outlaw hammers? What about the gentleman who was beaten to death with a baseball bat by his wife and her lover? Should we outlaw baseball bats?
Where is the harm in a law abiding citizen owning multiple firearms? Some people collect firearms while others collect coins or stamps. Just because a person has a collection of weapons does not mean that they are a criminal or that they intend to use them to harm others.
And finally, please don't stigmatize people with 'mental health issues'. Not all are psycopaths. You quite probably work or associate with someone who has 'issues' and don't even know it. How many of you suffer from depression and won't admit it? At least those of us who are being treated are man enough to admit that we need help and are getting it.
Joe, you and your family are in ours prayers. I look forward to seeing you back on the road again.
I knew Mike and he was a good pearson. theres know excuse for what he did. Im sorry for the people he hurt. But please dont say things like im glad he got takin out. he must have had some major issues for him to hurt someone else
Regarless of how much killing power you have in your home, the fact remains this guy wanted to kill and be killed attempting to do that. I don't believe in suicide, that is my faith knowning Jesus as my savior. On the other hand as a first responder, rescue chief, I see this too many times. Why take or attempt to take a life that is not involved in your personal situation! Joe was doing what his calling by God was about. Provide safety to those who need to be protected by those insane and have no respect for others. Joe nor his family did not deserve this. You want to kill yourself, be man enough to do without bringing other lives into it!
I don't know Sheriff Buice personally, but I needed to get a interview for a paper in my Criminal Justice class, a couple of years ago and Sheriff Buice took time out of his day to give me an interview over the phone. I live in Florida, my brother-in-law worked for Sheriff Buice. I hope that he gets well soon, Sheriff Buice and his family are in our prayers.
Sheriff Buice is an exceptional Law enforcement officer and from what he told me in my interview that he really cares about the citizens of Lamar County. I hope that he trys to run again next term. The citizens of his county need him.
I believe the question that should comes to mind is not be if people should or should not be allowed to own an assault weapon, but how was someone with psychiatric problems able to mass such a large cash of assault weapons. I know people with a history of mental problems are not allowed to own such weapons.
He could have purchases these guns in 1985 for all we know. If he goes to purchase a gun now there is a questionaire he has to answer about mental health issues. He will not be able to get a firearm permit to carry one either. This does not mean that the government can come into your home and take all of your guns by force because you are seeking mental help.
As for the other comment about these guns are for murdering people.(#14) You truely are ignorant. I think the Sgt said enough. Im not even gonna waste 2 hrs writing a response to it that i would like to.
None of us know what Stringer's mental state was at the time this happened. It could very well be that he was so disconnected that he is unaware of what happened the day he shot 2 people. (I know, he's never going to be aware now, no need to say it.)
Have you ever known a person who committed suicide? The disconnect between the person you know and the deed they are bent on committing is very wide, and it unimaginable to the rest of us. Their pain is unfathomable.
Before blasting me, know that I'm just musing here. I'm not placing judgement, I'm not defending anyone. I'm just trying to understand, and I'm feeling grateful for my life.
Continued recovery wishes to Officer Buice and the unnamed gentleman who was shot at while driving.
I agree, mental pain can get to the point of despair that one can not see past the moment at hand. They usually have no recognition that all things will pass. Unlike several others on this string, with the exception of someone with a debilitating illness, I believe intervention should be common practice.
This is a pro-gun majority area, this isn't new york or DC. The newspaper isn't making any friends hinting that someone is wrong for exercising our God given, and supreme court backed RIGHT to keep and bear arms.
I'm cousins with Joe Buice and to put it simply he was only doing his job. Most of our family is in law enforcement in one capacity or another. Our family thanks you for all of your well wishes and prayers.
To cats, I have an uncle who committed suicide. There was no disconnect or "gap" ,as you put it, between him and everyone else in our family.
Who are your parents? I have always been fond of the Buice family. Carol and Elizabeth were two of the prettiest girls I have ever met. When children, each year, our families looked forward to the revival at the Church of the Nazarene in Meansville. That is where my sister met Winton, who she later married. Please say Hello to, the girls and boys for me. I especially remember Paul and David. All the Buice children were ladies and gentlemen, I can remember that as as a teen. Hug Joe for me and tell him he is in my prayers.
Once again the left-wing media gets it wrong. An "armory" is a place where weapons are manufactured. An "assault rifle" is a rifle capable of fully automatic fire. The rifles pictured are semi-automatic rifles of AK-47 design chambered for the 7.62x39 mm round. The vast majority of deer rifles in your county are chambered for a more powerful round. Either the editor and reporter have no idea about what they are reporting on or they do not care. They will just inflame the left and the uneducated that much more.
Am I mistaken or did you just refer to Walter Geiger and the Herald_Gazette as the "left-wing media"? That is priceless. Kudos on your ignorance, my friend.
Whoopty-do. One is dead, Joe is seriously injured and a passerby was hurt. Obviously weapons were used. I believe in my right to bear arms, but I do not have the right to endanger the life of another person for no reason. ESPECIALLY an officer of the law. Don't get all UP-IN-ARMS over the small stuff.
I am so pleased to see that Citizens in this area do not cow tow to fictions reported by mainstream media (this can be taken 2 ways). On the other hand, I am saddened to see that The Herald Gazette is resorting to using incorrect terms when it relates to firearms (or anything else).
Walter, you're better than that. You're not CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, and we don't want you to be like them. You do a fabulous job of informing the public in a truthful fashion; please keep up the good work.
im all for the right to bear arms. what good is a a k 47 other than to murder someone. thats what they were made for period. so if smrone has one he must have a need to murder.
"im all for the right to bear arms. what good is a a k 47 other than to murder someone. thats what they were made for period. so if smrone has one he must have a need to murder."
I wasn't going to waste my time replying to this one, but I changed my mind.
If you are 'all for the right to bear arms," as you say, why would you support restricting that right to suit your own(or anyone else's) opinion? Wouldn't that necessarily change the Second Amendment from a right to a privelige?
The AK-47 was not designed "to murder someone." Mikhail Kalashnikov has been quoted numerous times as saying that he designed it for no other reason than to defend his country during a time of great suffering. While his country's political ideology was bogus and horrible, his brand of patriotism was essentially no different than that of John C. Garand or John M. Browning.
You probably don't realize it, but your average Remington 700 chambered in .30-06 is about five times more powerful and has much more range and effectiveness than any AK-47.
Thank you, by the way, for the left-handed accusation in your last statement. I own several semi-auto variants of the AK-47, along with the accompanying field gear and accessories, so I guess I must be a murderer, huh? Nevermind the fact that when I go overseas, I have to train local national troops and police in the use of the AK. Nevermind the fact that knowing enough about the weapon will help you to train others in safe and responsible use of the thing and not look like a complete clown in front of the local nationals.
I suggest you do further reading on the subject of individual rights, the Constitution of the United States and a few books on military small arms.
It also looks like you could stand to receive some training in remedial English.
Mr. Geiger, it looks like you're not getting the reaction you hoped for with this story. Your misuse of the terms "armory" and "AK-47 assault rifle" is straight out of the Violence Policy Center's playbook, and reads just as awkwardly as their hysterical pulp fiction.
Another respondent quite aptly said that you are not writing for a New York or Los Angeles audience, and I wonder if you have that clearly in mind.
Shrill, panicky reporting on the subject of firearms is getting to be a tiresome and boring part of reading the newspaper. How about some real news without all the shrieking and crying about "mean ol' guns" for a change?
While the circumstances of this news report are tragic and regrettable, I see no reason to wax hysterical about Stringer's "armory," other than to push a noxious and unwelcome agenda on your readership.
actually, the sheriff's investigator who briefed the media used the word armory. i should have made that more clear.
believe me when i tell you, a lot of people are laughing at the thought of me being a left winger. i have hunted all my life and am very proficient with and own all types of firearms.
You have to admit, given the incredible deluge of negative media reporting about firearms these days, that some buzzwords have been firmly established as anti-gun, despite their innocuous nature.
I personally don't care how the shooter's family is doing. From what I understand he had told his family he was "going to get in a shoot out with the cops". That might have been something you want to tell someone ahead of time. My only concern is Buice who was doing a job very few people would even consider doing. My only hope is that Spalding County kept shooting until they ran out of bullets.
I believe the "shooters" family were the 1st to alert the Sheriff's department you thoughtless person for lack of a better name. How hateful of you to write "who cares about the family." You should be ashamed. They are innocent in this matter. May you keep them off limits to your future nasty and thoughtless comments. Might I remind you the family indicated contain children, who must now live out their lives with out their daddy!!
Their "daddy" (for lack of better term) opened fire on innocent bystanders and police officers. What kind of influence was this guy going to be in their lives anyways.
I agree he is not a good influence. I agree totally, but the statement was "I don't care about the family". And my statment was, "the family is innocent".
Stay focused on the one that did the horrible deed, not the family.
In response to your comment, my heart and prayers go out to the sheriffs deputies and ems first responders that arrived on the scene and had to deal with this senseless situation. I feel horrible that officer Buice was shot and injured-I pray that he will be able to make a full recovery. I feel horrible for the drivers of those two vehicles.I feel horrible for those officers that had to take another's life-they had no choice. This ordeal is something that will never leave them. Believe me, I know. Now with regards to your comment about "not caring about his family", he has two children that will have to live with the horrible stigma of what their father did. It is plastered all over the news and internet. Children today know how to use a computer better than the adults commenting on this story. With that being said, they have access to all the tv reports, newspapers reports, video clips and to the insensitive, ignorant, and disrespectful comment you and no doubt others will make in the future for the rest of their lives. What bearing did these innocent children have in their father's insane actions? Did they, as young children, make their father do what he did? These are just a few things you should have thought about before you made that senseless, horrible comment towards his "family". There is no sense to be made from as to why this happened-the answers to these questions died with the shooter.
what good is an ak-47 other than murdering someone, your a retard. they are well used to be inexpensive, reliable rifles. and this is why gun laws are so tight, granted its sucks what happened, but last time i checked a thousand 7.62 goes out pretty fast if you like going to the range
do you hunt with a a k 47 do you have one laying around the house to protect yourself with the only thing these wepons were made for was killing another person and im a conseritive that beleaves in the right to bear arms just not wepons for only one use
In response to your rather poorly worded question, yes, you CAN hunt with an AK-47. I hunt white tails in our thick brush and piney woods down here in Mississippi, and the little rifle does quite well with Winchester Power-Points on deer out to about 150 yards. The 7.62x39 cartridge has about the same power and range as a .30-30 Winchester Centerfire. It's not a rifle that I would use to take 500 yard shots on deer with, but then again, I don't believe that it's a good idea to attempt shots on game animals at long ranges, anyway; too much possibility of wounding the animal instead of making a clean kill.
It might interest you to know that the .30-06 was made expressly for killing other people, namely Germans and Japanese, before it was adapted for use as a hunting cartridge. So was the .38-40 Krag, the .45-70 Government, the .308 Winchester (known to us as 7.62 NATO), the.303 British and a host of other cartridges. The .30-06 was a modified copy of the 7.92Ss round developed by the Germans, which we call the 8mm Mauser, and it was also adapted for hunting after the Germans killed a few people with it. Nearly every hunting cartridge in the U.S. was an adaptation or an offshoot of a military cartridge. Look it up if you don't believe me.
You may want to do a little more reading about the evolution and development of weapons before you go running off at the mouth about how "this weapon was made for this" or "that weapon was made for that."
Incidentally, if your "beleafs" preclude you from using "wepons for only one use," you are probably going to have to either hunt with wildcat cartridges or give up hunting altogether.
sounds like you know your stuff. if you haven't already, read stephen hunter's 'I, Sniper' that was just published....in fact, you would like his entire sniper series.
I haven't yet read "I, Sniper," but I have read most of Hunter's other books, and enjoyed them immensely.
I wish that Hollywood had done a better job of translating Bob Lee Swagger's character in the movie "Sniper," though; "Marky Mark" Wahlberg just didn't strike me as a rough customer at all...
sure you can hunt with an Ak47. I personally hunt with a Chinese SKS. You are limited to the number of rounds you can have in the magazine. That is the same with dove, deer, duck hunting etc. You are limited to the amount of rounds when hunting period.
I just watched the interview in channel five and I observed one comment that struck me!! The reporter said that Buice said the one thing he has learned was to "savor" everyday. I totally agree and I also agree that it should make someone think about how they treat others, how they speak to others and how they take care of others. Especially their "law enforcement family". To know that at any moment you may be called to lay down your life for your brother is an awesome responsibility.
My observation of things that are happening now and have happened in the recent past in our own" law enforcement family" is there are things that need to really be looked at with deep thought. Some Apologies need to be made, wrongs made right . Our true hearts and commitments to our "brother and sister deputies" need to be reassessed.
We are never promised tomorrow and never know when you may depend on someone else to save your life. Just A Thought!
My heart goes out to the family of the shooter. It's a terrible thing that has happened. Regardless of how crazy and mentally ill the man was, he was still a father and a husband. There's now 2 children and a step son that will forever be without the man that was in their lives. It's a horrible situation. It's not the families fault this happened. It lies solely in the dead hands of a man that was very sick.
I'm very thankful that Joe is going to be okay, and my heart also goes out to his family. Thank God that he's alright. And also, thank you Joe for doing your job, and for wanting to continue your heroic efforts to the community.

Actually, the correct media sockpuppet term is "arsenal".
As for 1000 rounds...LOL. I have that many loaded in magazines.

I wish it were otherwise.

And why does the media lie about the types of guns used? Surely they weren't fully automatic like they suggest.
Man that bugs me beyond anything else. For someone to call someone else a retard when using "your" incorrectly.
For future childish name-calling the correct usage would be you're a retard.
just sayin'
