District 4 Public Health wants parents and employers to know that flu-like illness is being reported in communities within the 12 county Region. Because only a small portion of persons with respiratory illness are tested for novel H1N1, confirmed and probable case counts represent a significant underestimation of the true number of novel H1N1 flu cases. Gordon College is expecting record enrollment that could well exceed 4000 students. Classes began yesterday.

GC president Larry Weill told the Barnesville-Lamar County Industrial Development Authority projections were enrollment would be up 17% over last fall when enrollment was about 3800. [Full Story »]

The threat of a bomb in the on-campus cafeteria marred the return to campus for Gordon students Sunday night.

UPDATE: As is almost always the case in these incidents, the threat was bogus. There have been no injuries and no explosive devices have been found on campus. [Full Story »]

Apparently there are two students in a Pike County school(s) who are being tested for swine flu. Neither the ages of the students nor the school(s) they attend was disclosed but indications are they are from the same family.

Following the House vote Friday to rush $2 billion into the now-popular but financially strapped Cash for Clunkers car purchase program, regional auto dealers seem optimistic the program will stick around and continue to stimulate the auto sales industry.

"We've done 10 deals through the Cash for Clunkers program. It has drawn a lot of traffic and brought a lot of people in," notes David Sperau, president of Trophy Ford of Forsyth.
