On Wednesday, September 23, 2009, at approximately 11:06 a.m., sheriff's deputies and investigators from the Monroe County Sheriff's office responded to a 911 call from a homeowner in northern Monroe County whose home was being burglarized by two unidentified male suspects.

Lamar Arts silent auction to kick off October

Items for the Lamar Arts Silent Auction are being received for display at the home of Charles and Jean Dukes,at 530 Thomaston St. The home, built in 1914 by Buggy Baron Walter B. Smith, is the site of the Oct. 1 fundraiser.

Monies from this  annual event, along with membership dues, support the many activities of this volunteer organization such as the summer art camp for youth. Members hope the auction will raise funds to supplement the cost of conducting  a camp in 2010. [Full Story »] 

Flagpole dedication to honor fallen local soldier

The Barnesville Woodmen of the World lodge will hold a flagpole dedication ceremony in remembrance and honor of Master Sgt. Davy Weaver at Lilla Memorial Baptist Church on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 6 p.m.

Weaver, who lost his life fighting in Afghanistan on May 18, 2008, is buried at Lilla. The section of Highway 36 East on which the church is located is named for him.

As Barnesville-Lamar County celebrated Buggy Days, the Herald-Gazette website at www.barnesville.com recorded its two millionth pageview for 2009.

According to Google analytics, annual pageviews on barnesville.com were at 2,028,761 at midnight on Sunday, September 20.

This year's SAT scores show Lamar County students remained below state averages. However, while Georgia's scores continued to plummet Lamar's are going up.

"The SAT scores are regarded as one of the best measures of a student's readiness to begin college on a positive note – and be successful," said superintendent Dr. Bill Truby. "Here in Lamar County, we saw a significant increase in our average over 2008. [Full Story »]

A call could come at any time and Lamar County Coroner Jim Smith or his Deputy Cindy Killingsworth must respond immediately. In the case of any sudden, unexpected or unexplained death, they must be notified and present before a body is moved. Then the work begins.

The chamber of commerce is pleased to invite everyone to Summers Field for the [Almost] Anything Goes games tonight. The event, long a part of the Buggy Days festival, was reprised last year and returns again for 2009.

Now an annual event the games include the three-legged race, sack relay, water balloon toss, etc. [Full Story »] 

Flu vaccines available

Seasonal influenza vaccines are now available at the Lamar County Health Department. Vaccinations began Wednesday, Sept. 16. Appointments are available from 8 - 11:30 a.m. and 1 - 4:30 p.m.
Citizens are asked to call 770-358-1483 to schedule an appointment.

Walgreens at 597 Highway 341 South is also administering flu shots throughout the month of September. [Full Story »] 

Fruitticher Promoted at Gordon College

Lee Fruitticher has been promoted to Vice President of Business Affairs at Gordon College.

He previously served as associate vice president of business affairs and has been at Gordon College for three years. Prior to his position at Gordon, Fruitticher was controller at Macon State. [Full Story »] 

First ever Kids' Night draws a huge crowdvideo

The newest addition to Barnesville Buggy Days, Kids' Night, made its debut Tuesday evening at Summers Field and drew a huge crowd.

Attendance estimates ranged from 300-500 and organizers and volunteers were blown away by the turnout.

According to President and CEO of the chamber of commerce, Amanda Rose, "Because this is our first year hosting this event we weren't sure what to expect in terms of weather, attendance numbers, or even participation. But judging by the smiles on everyone's faces it seems like a great success [Full Story »]
