As the sun set on Barnesville on Labor Day, the temperature was the only thing getting cooler as some 300 people showed up at the Ritz Park ampitheatre to show their concern over recent political developments.

Labor Day is a celebration of the efforts of America’s workers. However, the celebration is hollow for millions of American workers because of compulsory unionism.

Throughout the United States, over 12 million workers labor under contracts that require them to be a member of, or financially support, a union as a condition of employment.

Additionally, millions of more workers are required by law to accept union bosses’ so-called “representation,” thereby losing the right to negotiate their own employment terms.

Big Labor thrives on this system of government-granted special privileges based on coercion. Compulsory unionism makes union bosses more unaccountable to rank-and-file workers, as their financial support is absolutely mandatory. [Full Story »]

Every year, we celebrate Labor Day to honor the work of everyday Americans who built this country brick by brick, community by community. It’s an honorable holiday that pays tribute to honorable work.

While it’s always good to give thanks, we need much more than well wishes and a cheer of support. We need to ensure that the rules that govern our economic system, whether those rules come from Wall Street or from Washington, treat all Americans, particularly those who are the backbone of our economy, with dignity and respect. That’s what Labor Day is truly about.

From the time the first Labor Day was held, Americans understood that even what we call a “free” market still has rules that govern its actions; rules that can either work for or against the average American. That’s why they fought for a more just set of rules, a fight that ultimately led to the 40-hour workweek, the first minimum wage laws, the abolition of child labor, and workplace safety standards. Penny McBroom was a woman on a mission. She had just come back from the Atlanta Tea Party with gal pals Wanda Dailey and Lynn McCollough and she was on fire.

'There is something dreadfully wrong with our country', she declared. 'We must stand up for God, country and our Constitution.' McBroom, a Barnesville resident, felt a calling from God. Inspired by the hymn 'Onward Christian Soldiers' she was determined to enlist an army of local volunteers to put together their own local Tea Party.

They did so and it will be held Labor Day, Monday September 7, at Ritz Park from 7 - 9 p.m.

The Lamar County Trojans lost the field position battle in the third quarter, squandered a 9-0 lead and fell 23-16 victims to the Mary Persons Bulldogs in Forsyth Friday night. The Trojans are now 1-1 against AAA competition and open region play next Friday when they play Spencer High at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Columbus. [Full Story »]

Erratic pitching in the first inning and sloppy defense in the second cost the Lamar County Lady Trojans their first home loss of the season as they fell to Upson-Lee 7-4 here last week.

The Lady Knights took advantage of three walks and a pair of hits to score four first inning runs. They added three unearned runs in the second inning thanks to four Lamar errors to lead 7-0.

The Lady Trojans and pitcher Abby Walker settled down after that and held Upson scoreless the rest of the way on two hits, a walk and a hit batter. Lamar whittled away at the seven run deficit but could not get the big hit to get enough runs to catch up. [Full Story »]

The Bulldogs take the field with an all-time record of 515 - 218 - 5, a winning percentage of 70.12%.
