Some 5 million family pets are reported missing annually. Based on pet theft reports filed with agencies across the nation it is conservatively estimated that approximately 1.5 to 2 million of these missing family pets are taken forcibly, or by deception, through so-called "Free to Good Home" ads.

The rest simply 'disappear' for a host of reasons. This week alone in Lamar County 5 dogs have been reported to The Herald-Gazette as missing and/or found.

This beautiful dog showed up at a friend's house on south 341 with his shock collar around his neck. He has to belong to someone. [Full Story »]

An older male, black Pomeranian dog has been found just off Hwy 341 South near Wilmot/Abbott Rd.

As jobs decreased and the number of people seeking them rose, Lamar County's unemployment rate began rising again in September, jumping to 15.3% from 14.8% in August. Joblessness was 7.8% in September 2008. [Full Story »]

This October and November bird lovers and nature conservators alike will have the opportunity to help restore habitat for Northern Bobwhite Quail, Loggerhead Shrikes, Eastern Meadowlarks and other species.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources Non-Game Division began efforts to restore grasslands a few years ago. Despite talented staff, they kept running into a problem – how to obtain seeds?

Another suspicious death has occurred in Lamar County - this time at the Deerfield Trace subdivision near the Barnesville-Lamar County Industrial Park.

Coroner Jim Smith identified the dead woman, found early Sunday, as Donna E. Giroux, 49, of 182 Deerfield Trace. Hers is the fourth such death since Wednesday. [Full Story »]

Just over an hour ago the Herald-Gazette reported that Colleen Grantham woke up this morning only to find her beloved friend, pet and company mascot, Dixie, gone.

Dixie, a 5 year old pitbull mix with a red collar and a rabies tag has long been the face of Grantham's Lady Bug Pest Control. [Full Story »]

The Griffin Police Dept. has found a missing teenage girl. Madeleine Raleigh Gantt was last seen on Forrest Ave. in Griffin at 10:30 a.m. October 22. She was located at 10 p.m. October 22 in Alabama and is safe. [Full Story »]
