Barnesville city council named councilwoman Anne Claxton the mayor pro tem during a brief meeting Jan. 11. She takes the place of longtime mayor pro tem Lynn Wilson, who did not run for re-election last year.

Police found the body of a recent graduate of Henry County's Ola High School in her California apartment on Tuesday and her new husband was charged with the slaying.

The body of Kalyn Denise O’Barr-Poteat, 19, was reportedly discovered in her San Diego apartment by police. Her husband, U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Patrick Poteat, 21, is being charged with murder, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. His arraignment was scheduled for today in San Diego County Superior Court. He is being held without bail. Barnesville-Lamar County has entered the deepfreeze and will stay there for awhile as unusually cold temperatures will dominate the local forecast for the next week.

Former Monticello mayor Susan Dykes Holmes has announced her candidacy for the District 125 seat in the Georgia House of Representatives now held by Jim Cole. Cole is expected to be appointed Secretary of State by Gov. Sonny Perdue on Monday.
