Commissioner Nancy Thrash stood by her decision to vote for the resignation of two Lamar County assessors at the Milner city council meeting Tuesday.

Initial jobless claims exceed 100,000 in December; Georgia Jobs Summit to be held today in Atlanta

The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) announced today 100,896 laid-off workers filed initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits in December, an increase of 28,598, or 39.6 percent, from 72,298 in November. However, there was a decline of 27,729, or 21.6 percent, from 128,625 claims filed in December 2008, at the depth of the current recession.

Monday, Jan. 18, the Georgia Department of Labor will host the Georgia Jobs Summit in Atlanta, to develop a comprehensive strategy to spur private sector job creation and hiring in Georgia. The theme of the Jobs Summit is Shaping Georgia’s Economic Destiny. [Full Story »]

Lamar tax assessors chairman Lisa Dziedzic and vice-chairman David Dodd have issued prepared statements regarding the demand for their resignations by the Lamar County commission.

At approximately 5:21 a.m. this morning deputies with the Lamar County Sheriff's Office responded to 693 Brook Road, Barnesville, Georgia - the residence of a white female Joann Bryan, age 52, and white male Richard Duke, age 66 - in reference to a person shot.

Upon arrival Deputies found Ms. Bryan with an apparent gunshot wound to the right abdomen. [Full Story »]

The U.S. Department of Justice has approved implementation of the Georgia VoteSafe Program.

It provides for confidentiality of residence address of certain registered voters who have been, or may be, subject to acts of family violence, stalking or who live in a family violence shelter.
