Sheriff's deputies and agents of the Narcotics Task Force executed a search warrant at 147 Aldora Street Thursday afternoon. They found indications of methamphetamine manufacture and made five arrests. [Full Story »]

Lamar County Schools and all system sporting events are canceled for Friday February 12 due to the forecast of snow here.

It is unfortunate but it is true. A cruise down College Drive or a pass of 341 North as well as some Lamar extension, planned communities sit empty, sewage and power lines sticking up from the ground with the haunting allure of a headstone at Greenwood Cemetery.

As with much of the United States tile-roofed versions of a 21st century ghost town remind us of the gambling losses that took place not on the blackjack tables of Vegas but the board tables of America's financial institutions. [Full Story »]

The Lamar County commission voted unanimously Feb. 9 to name John Hambrick and Roger Hollandsworth to the Board of Assessors.

Old Dixie Highway subject of DOT project

The Georgia Department of Transportation is creating an atlas of the old Dixie Highway – better known around these parts as Highway 41 – and has chosen the stretch between Barnesville and Forsyth as its pilot project.

Historians from New South Associates were in town recently to collect oral histories of the highway, built roughly along the trail of an old stagecoach route. While attendance was sparse, the memories were not.

Accused killer Teresa Mangham Burousas made an appearance in Pike County superior court Tuesday.

Burousas was scheduled to be arraigned but mumbled she had no plea when questioned by Judge Christopher Edwards. The judge then entered directed pleas of not guilty for her on counts of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during commission of a felony. [Full Story »]

The Premier for Newfoundland, one of Canada’s eastern provinces, underwent heart surgery last week. Where do you suppose Premier Danny Williams went for his surgery? To a hospital in St. John’s, the capital city of Newfoundland? Nope. Perhaps he traveled to a larger Canadian metropolis, such as Toronto or Montreal? Guess again. Actually, the premier chose to have his cardiac repair performed not anywhere in his own country. Like so many of his fellow Canadians, Premier Williams eschewed his country’s government-insured health care system, and instead came south to the United States to undergo life-saving and time-sensitive surgery. Locals bring hope to Haiti

When a major earthquake hit Haiti, missionaries from Rock Springs Global Outreach knew exactly what they needed to do: help.

Preparations by mission leader Don Mapp and his crew began the Friday after the quake hit. Also on the mission were paramedic Jon Baker, Rock Springs middle school pastor J.T. Sutton and Jackie Wharam, pastor of Bay Branch Primitive Baptist Church in Claxton.

"It was a task just to get there," said Mapp, also a paramedic with Mid-Georgia Ambulance. "We ran into roadblock after roadblock."

The Diamond Trojans will host the Howard High Huskies from Macon at Aldora Field at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 23, to start the regular season.

Coach Greg Williams and the Trojan Dugout Club will formally introduce the varsity, junior varsity and middle school teams Monday, Feb. 15, in the middle school cafeteria at 6:30 p.m. at the annual Meet the Trojans banquet.
