Note: Lamar County High School has moved its graduation ceremony to 9 a.m. Saturday morning from Friday nights in an attempt to dodge bad weather and cut out raucous behavior by graduation guests. This piece appeared in the Macon Telegraph commenting on a photo of a police officer removing a young man wearing shorts and flip-flops from a ceremony there.

The young man pictured on your front page being escorted out of a graduation ceremony by an officer was doing his job. Hooray for the officer. Boo to the whining young man. America faces a new culture war.

This is not the culture war of the 1990s. It is not a fight over guns, gays or abortion. Those old battles have been eclipsed by a new struggle between two competing visions of the country's future. In one, America will continue to be an exceptional nation organized around the principles of free enterprise -- limited government, a reliance on entrepreneurship and rewards determined by market forces. In the other, America will move toward European-style statism grounded in expanding bureaucracies, a managed economy and large-scale income redistribution. These visions are not reconcilable. From the Muslm American Society....

On May 18, Muslim American Society Freedom (MASF) joined the ACLU and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) along with other plaintiffs in filing a lawsuit in the US District Court of Arizona challenging Arizona's new law requiring police to demand "papers" from people they stop who they suspect are not authorized to be in the US.

MASF is a civic and civil rights advocacy division of the Muslim American Society, America's largest Muslim grassroot organization.

Fittingly, she was buried amid weeds, wildflowers and kinfolk in the ramshackle graveyard at Beulah Baptist Church in Pike County.

As the Obama administration enters its second year, I -- and undoubtedly millions of others -- have struggled to develop a shorthand term that captures our emotional unease. Defining this discomfort is tricky. I reject nearly the entire Obama agenda, but the term "being opposed" lacks an emotional punch. Nor do terms like "worried" or "anxious" apply. I was more worried about America's future during the Johnson or Carter years, so it's not that dictionary, either.
