Tornado was F3; relief fund established; federal assistance now available

The tornado that ripped through Lamar County early Thursday was been classified by the National Weather Service as reaching EF3 strength with winds of 140 mph.

Meanwhile a fund has been established through the Barnesville-Lamar County Community Foundation for storm relief. Donations are tax deductible and eligible for matching contributions from the Central Georgia Community Foundation.

Lamar County residents are now eligible to apply for individual federal disaster assistance.

A tornado which hopscotched across parts of Lamar County just before 1 a.m. Thursday killed two people. Authorities waited for daylight to seek additional victims. At 10:40 a.m., Major Brad White of the LCSO reported no more bodies had been found.

The victims have been identified as Paul and Ellen Gunter of the 400 block of Grove Street.

Southern Rivers has 1500 outages of which 1200 are in Lamar. Some may not be restored until Saturday night. [Full Story »]

Northeastern Lamar County is in the crosshairs of developers once again. This time a toll road for big rigs could carve up the neighborhood.

UPDATE: Commission chairman Jay Matthews reported Thursday he met with a Paulding County delegation last summer about the roadway and he told them Lamar was not interested. "I thought it was a dead issue," Matthews said. [Full Story »]

A 19-year-old Barnesville man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the killing of a Family Dollar assistant manager during a robbery in Macon.

Southern Rivers Crews made great strides overnight in restoring power to cooperative members and, as of 8 a.m., outages were down to 800.

UPDATE: Power to all homes without structural damage is near complete. SRE was down to 90 impacted jomes at 5:30 p.m. All power, except that to damaged homes, is expected to be restored by the end of the day. [Full Story »]

At 5:30 p.m., Southern Rivers Energy spokesman Erin Cook reported 2600 members were still without power as a result of Tuesday morning's storms. Pike County was the hardest hit area but the entire system was impacted.
