Gordon State College Chemistry professor Richard Schmude met with Newman Club members (l-r) Carey Lisk, Austin Corbin, Andrew Jones, Gwenevere Gilliland, and Mark Johnson to organize food items recently collected from across campus. The food items will be given to Hope Tree Ministries in Barnesville. The Newman Club will soon begin its annual winter and blanket drive across campus.

Those of us who love football wait impatiently for it all year long. Baseball, once the national pastime, has been reduced to a space filler between gridiron seasons. We watch it casually but do not obsess over it though having a winning team in Atlanta would help. Once it arrives, football season goes by much too fast. We have hit the midpoint for high school teams and most college squads will hit their midpoint this weekend.

A six-year-old boy who took two rusty revolvers to his first day of classes at Pike County Primary School Sept. 29 will soon be on his way back to Alabama with his pregnant mother and two siblings after a juvenile court hearing here Tuesday morning.

Judge Ben Miller Jr. dismissed a motion that Georgia take jurisdiction in the case, clearing the way for the move. [Full Story »]

Kittens rescued from storm drain

All four kittens rescued from a drain during Friday's rainstorm have already found a home.

Nora Daniels and Kayla Stanfield rescued the kittens from a storm drain between Balamo Building Supply and the cabinet shop. Their mother was nowhere to be found and the women sought homes for them. Within minutes of the posting on The Herald Gazette page, someone took all four of them in.
