The Lamar Sweetees U6 coach-pitch softball team is off to the Softball World Series that begins today in Perry. The locals girls qualified for the tournament by winning the Georgia state championship. It is believed to be the first team in Lamar history to make the World Series.
The girls (uniform numbers) are Scarlett Bryan (00), Ja'Zyah Foster (1), River Evans (2), Sh'Nyah Settles (3), Kayleigh McLendon (5), Diondria Fletcher (7), Amiyah Hord (10), Jayla Robinson (11), Sara Errera (19), Ellie Kate Moore (20), Bailie Martin (90) and Makayla Watts (99).
They are coached by manager Brad Bryan, first base coach Brittany Martin, third base coach Jeremy Robinson and bench coach Kimberly Smith.
UPDATE: The Lamar girls were eliminated in the second round but made the entire Barnesville-Lamar County community proud by their achievements.

During my boyhood, this time of year was all about going to the Barnesville swimming pool, which was located about where the Gordon Highlanders now play baseball. I’d join many others in purchasing an annual pass and using the laminating machine outside of Carter’s Drug Store to render it waterproof.

Lamar County voters go to the polls today to cast ballots in the general primary runoff. Polling places throughout the county will be open from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.
The only race on local ballots is that for the Republican nomination in the District 3, U.S House race. Mike Crane and Steve Ferguson are vying for the GOP nod. The winner will face Democrat Angela Pendley Nov. 8.
There were 264 Lamar countians who cast advance ballots with 62 absentee ballots mailed out of which 41 had been returned.

The Lamar County Trojans will host an intrasquad scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 6 at 6 p.m. at Trojan Field. Admission is $5.
There will be bounce houses and snow cones for the kids and the booster club will operate a full concession stand. After the game, recreation players will have the opportunity to play flag football under the lights on the Trojan Field turf.
South Atlanta H.S. will be here for a scrimmage Aug. 12. Monticello will come to town for a second scrimmage Aug. 16. Both those events start at 7 p.m., also at Trojan Field.
