The Premier for Newfoundland, one of Canada’s eastern provinces, underwent heart surgery last week. Where do you suppose Premier Danny Williams went for his surgery? To a hospital in St. John’s, the capital city of Newfoundland? Nope. Perhaps he traveled to a larger Canadian metropolis, such as Toronto or Montreal? Guess again. Actually, the premier chose to have his cardiac repair performed not anywhere in his own country. Like so many of his fellow Canadians, Premier Williams eschewed his country’s government-insured health care system, and instead came south to the United States to undergo life-saving and time-sensitive surgery.

For us common folk who can't afford to travel, Canadians have a lower mortality rate for cardiovascular disease than the US, so the government isn't doing too bad of a job up there.
Guess what? I've paid into that fund since I was 16 years old. That's 46 years. That means that I've paid for those programs. I've earned the right to use what I paid my own money for.
In other words, I'm getting something back for something I was forced to pay in to for a lifetime.

We may have excellent cardiologists in America..but it is too bad that millions of employed Americans themselves cannot access these wonderful services due lack of insurance or underinsurance.

It may sound harsh but the best way to get people to improve themselves is to let them do without. Eventually they will get up and go to work or be hungry. I'd bet at least 90% - 95% are capable of working but refuse to because people like you are willing to carry them. Plus, why work for something when it is going to be given to you for free.

You have actually just discovered the solution to the unemployment crisis in this country. The government can appoint a person to follow people around Wal-Mart and tell them what is best for them. For example, when they want to purchase soft drinks, someone will be there to tell them water is better. When they travel to a fast food place and order a hamburger, a government representative will be there to tell them a salad is better.

And yes, it is my “personal opinion” that everybody should have insurance. To not have insurance is to act irresponsible. We’re paying more now for people using emergency room service because they can’t afford a primary care physician due to insurance being to darn high. And Yes, I already knew what empowerment means, the question is, do you?

The health care issue: What a fiasco! We already have a health care plan and it's called Medicare. All congress needs to do is expand Medicare. And all the expansion needed is to be expanded to cover catastrophic cost to prevent families from going down in the event of major health problems. Common trips to the primary care doctor wouldn't be covered. Routine care wouldn't be covered. The government could determine how much this catastrophic form of Medicare would cost and let those companies that don’t provide health care pay a part (no tax benefit) toward the cost and the insured (tax deductible)pay the other half. Not being allowed a tax benefit would discourage companies from dropping their health care plans now and those others might be encouraged to seek health care plans to obtain a tax credit. At least everyone would be covered and young families wouldn’t be spending a fortune on health care but would be protected in the event of major health concerns. For a little more cost, prescription medicine could be added to the plan.

To start off with – the health care plan developed by democrats was crap. It would have cost more than it was worth and actually driven this country closer to, if not into, bankruptcy. Real issues were not even considered in the plan like restrictions on purchase and tort reform. Do you realize tort reform would be the single biggest aid to drive down health care cost? But most of your democratic lawmakers are lawyers and you might be getting into their pockets.
If government gets involved in the health care business, do you really think that insurance companies are going to stop being a “for profit” industry?
Second – you have no idea what a republican or conservative is. You appear to base it on taxes. Therefore, how much did you pay in? Let me tell you I paid my fair share and then some. A huge percentage of Americans pay no tax at all. That’s zero if you can’t comprehend it. A huge percentage of Americans get a refund even after they pay nothing. Do you think that money grows on trees? No! It comes from those people that do pay taxes, not those that pay taxes and get everything back and then some. Therefore, genius, I don’t think I’m supporting half the country. However, less than half the country is supporting the other half. But I’m not going to attempt to explain something you probably would never understand.
Third – you say that it’s government’s responsibility to protect the citizens and pass beneficial legislation. However, you stopped there. I think you are referring to these words:
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
- establish Justice: every citizen has the opportunity for a fair trial and for equal treatment
- insure domestic Tranquility: ensure the federal government had powers to squash rebellion and to smooth tensions between states.
- common defense: Means that the nation (people) would come together as one to fend off any attack.
- promote the general Welfare: to allow every state and every citizen of those states to benefit from what the government could provide.
- - - Too many people assume that “promote the general welfare’ means that the government is supposed to give them what they cannot get for themselves. That is one of the biggest reason we are in the mess we are in now. The constitution does not promise you health care, food stamps, a welfare check, a home, land, a car, a TV, or anything. It promises everyone the same thing; and that is only what the government “COULD PROVIDE”!
Our government has stepped beyond the bounds of the constitution. They already provide more than what they are capable of providing. Another of the biggest reasons we have a deficient. And a debt!

As far as health care. Your own beloved congress sold your health care reform down the river. They abused their position and took a stance as progressives and tried to used power and corruption to force a socialist form of health care down the throats of America. A reform that did fine for people between certain ages, but deteriorated in care as Americans aged. Some people called them death panels, and that is exactly what they were. The reform preferred to let the elderly die a slow death with declining care as they aged. That is only one of many problems the bill had in it. But why am I telling you this. You already know it. Don’t you? Or are you in denial? You say I am “cold hearted and narrow minded” but I say not hardly; Do you think I should just fold and agree with you just because it’s something you want? I don’t think so. There were so many problems with the past health care reform bill that it makes me question what type of American are you. As for the socialist stealing the country; well we have many social programs already but to move to complete socialism: won’t happen without a revolution in the streets, and I’m prepared to fight to preserve what our forefathers made.
The republicans haven’t done anything except their job. I gather you will accept any bill (right or wrong) that the democrats want to push down America’s throat. With your rants it’s obvious to me that you know nothing of the conservative side of government, or you view them as just a thorn. You paint a picture to me as a typical arrogant progressive democrat that believes has the answer over and above what anyone else believes, and will force it on everyone regardless of what the majority of Americans say. In my opinion, you have such a backward view of government processes that it’s a game of wins and losses by democrats that appeases you the most. The democrats are currently taking a power and being corrupt with it, wielding it around as if it were a monarchy with Reid and Pelosi acting together as a single head of state or to make King Obama happy with his loyal subjects. You want to convince me the current bill is good? Then tell me why but, drop the compassion and base it on logic and principal. In a nut shell - I believe the public option will be the end to health care as we know it. The government will have successfully entered into a competing business venture with the private sector. The private sector will be unable to compete. Business that provides health care will opt out and pay the fine because it will cost them less in the long run. Eventually all primary health care will be the responsibility of the government. Private insurers will reorganize and come back as a secondary insurance plans to the public option turned government insurance, and they will be offered through businesses. However, because business pays the fine, they no longer have any responsibility to the employee because it all shifted to the government. Therefore, the people pay an excessive tax for government health care, business have no obligation to the employee, secondary insurers collect premiums but now pay out less. Why – because government red tape will decrease health care and cause long wait periods for approval. Secondary insurers benefit from that red tape. In the end, everyone wins except the people.

If the Democrats inherited any deficit, it was the FY 2007 deficit, the last of the Republican budgets. That deficit was the lowest in five years, and the fourth straight decline in deficit spending. After that, Democrats in Congress took control of spending, and that includes Barack Obama, who voted for those budgets. If Obama inherited anything, he inherited it from himself.
In a nutshell, what Obama is saying is I inherited a deficit that I voted for and then I voted to expand that deficit four-fold since January 20th.
And where was Barack Obama during this time? He was a member of that very Congress that passed all of these massive spending bills, and he signed the omnibus bill as President to complete FY 2009.
And If he can explain it a thousand more times, people will get it, and buy into it.

Why is this amazing? It’s not just the fact that Republicans are now posing as staunch defenders of a program they have hated ever since the days when Ronald Reagan warned that Medicare would destroy America’s freedom. Nor is it even the fact that, as House speaker, Mr. Gingrich personally tried to ram through deep cuts in Medicare — and, in 1995, went so far as to shut down the federal government in an attempt to bully Bill Clinton into accepting those cuts.
After all, you could explain this about-face by supposing that Republicans have had a change of heart, that they have finally realized just how much good Medicare does. And if you believe that, I’ve got some mortgage-backed securities you might want to buy.
No, what’s truly mind-boggling is this: Even as Republicans denounce modest proposals to rein in Medicare’s rising costs, they are, themselves, seeking to dismantle the whole program. And the process of dismantling would begin with spending cuts of about $650 billion over the next decade. Math is hard, but I do believe that’s more than the roughly $400 billion (not $500 billion) in Medicare savings projected for the Democratic health bills.
What I’m talking about here is the “Roadmap for America’s Future,” the budget plan recently released by Representative Paul Ryan, the ranking Republican member of the House Budget Committee. Other leading Republicans have been bobbing and weaving on the official status of this proposal, but it’s pretty clear that Mr. Ryan’s vision does, in fact, represent what the G.O.P. would try to do if it returns to power.
The broad picture that emerges from the “roadmap” is of an economic agenda that hasn’t changed one iota in response to the economic failures of the Bush years. In particular, Mr. Ryan offers a plan for Social Security privatization that is basically identical to the Bush proposals of five years ago.
But what’s really worth noting, given the way the G.O.P. has campaigned against health care reform, is what Mr. Ryan proposes doing with and to Medicare.
In the Ryan proposal, nobody currently under the age of 55 would be covered by Medicare as it now exists. Instead, people would receive vouchers and be told to buy their own insurance. And even this new, privatized version of Medicare would erode over time because the value of these vouchers would almost surely lag ever further behind the actual cost of health insurance. By the time Americans now in their 20s or 30s reached the age of eligibility, there wouldn’t be much of a Medicare program left.
But what about those who already are covered by Medicare, or will enter the program over the next decade? You’re safe, says the roadmap; you’ll still be eligible for traditional Medicare. Except, that is, for the fact that the plan “strengthens the current program with changes such as income-relating drug benefit premiums to ensure long-term sustainability.”
If this sounds like deliberately confusing gobbledygook, that’s because it is. Fortunately, the Congressional Budget Office, which has done an evaluation of the roadmap, offers a translation: “Some higher-income enrollees would pay higher premiums, and some program payments would be reduced.” In short, there would be Medicare cuts.
And it’s possible to back out the size of those cuts from the budget office analysis, which compares the Ryan proposal with a “baseline” representing current policy. As I’ve already said, the total over the next decade comes to about $650 billion — substantially bigger than the Medicare savings in the Democratic bills.
The bottom line, then, is that the crusade against health reform has relied, crucially, on utter hypocrisy: Republicans who hate Medicare, tried to slash Medicare in the past, and still aim to dismantle the program over time, have been scoring political points by denouncing proposals for modest cost savings — savings that are substantially smaller than the spending cuts buried in their own proposals.

"gimme people" make me sick!
I am lower middle class - have no health insurance - and the reason I have no health insurance is because I have CHOSEN to work at a place where group health is not available and cannot afford health insurance. However, I accept responsibilty for the fact that it is my choices that have led me to this point. For the government to demand that I have health insurance or be fined or imprisoned is ludicrous. There are other viable options that lawmakers do not seem to want to explore.
Some folks can stand right beside the truth an not see it.
The people that use the "blocked" term refuse to see this, OR they DO know it and refuse to comment on it.
Much Easier to blame the "other" party to defer attention from the facts.
Fact:
Democrats could have passed this bill all by themselves.
They did not need one republican, no, not even one.
But they also knew they would be ran outta town if they did.
So what do they do? Blame republicans of course.
First, let’s add in ‘free’ food. Now before you say I’m being ridiculous; what’s more important than having good nourishing food? Certainly not medical coverage. Many citizens are just getting by on happy meals. These are very unhealthy. Since we already have a ‘free’ food program in food stamps, I propose we simply expand it to include everyone. And why not? It is based on the very same logic applied to the government take-over of the private health system.
And this is really special - think of how the government could regulate what we eat to help us stay extra healthy and not over-burden the government health system. Because the federal government knows better than you, what you should eat to stay healthy. Put them in charge and watch that weight come off, and watch your blood pressure drop, and watch them force you to quit that pesky cigarette and alcohol habit!
Second, let’s make sure everyone has their own home. The government should provide one to everyone who wants one. After all, we all need a roof over our heads. And then as a bonus, the feds could make absolutely sure we don’t use too much energy. Each home (except those occupied by the government royalty) could have a special government controlled thermostat. They know exactly what summer and winter settings should be used to reduce global warming and to keep you healthy. Wow - watch the C02 just disappear!
Third, every American needs a sound, reliable car to get back and forth to work. Without one, why... you’d just have to sit home and be unproductive and not kick into the system with your income taxes. Each car would have special anti-terrorist software and hardware that allows the government to ‘turn-off’ the car if it’s being used dangerously or using too much energy. Plus, your government motors vehicle will always keep you at safe speeds. This will reduce unnecessary trips to the government hospital. Remember, the federal government is YOUR friend and just wants to keep you safe and healthy. So, let’s make sure every American has their own government supplied vehicle.
These essential services will complement our new government health care system and make us the envy of the world.
