Cuts proposed by the University System of Georgia would completely kill Georgia's venerable 4-H program.

The proposal includes elimination of all Georgia 4-H programs, 116 immediate layoffs which includes 94 County 4-H Agents, closing all five of the 4-H camping facilities including Rock Eagle, closing half of the county extension offices eliminating another 169 positions, and a host of other program eliminations and facility closures.

Here goes the USA. 40 years of bad care by our political leaders and public administrators and now the wheels are falling off. We are in now offically in free fall.

It's high time we all stood up and said enough is enough. This Governor not only wants to cut education he is pumping money into his home county for a little league baseball field and a horse park. If you recall a few years ago he gave himself, just him self a million dollar tax cut. He is a corrupt piece of garbage and needs to be removed from office before he ruins this great state.

Yeah, and He is building a huge fish pond (tongue firmly planted in cheek) at the AG Center in Perry, as well. Oh yeah, Perry just happens to be in Houston Co. which most of us know is his home county. I understand the dilemma of the State Budget Shortfall, but when you put a priority on a horsepark and a fishpond over the educational system and the long-standing 4-H & County Extension Programs, then there needs to be a tea party on the steps of the Capitol Building like there's never been seen before... BTW, I agree with everything you said in your post.

This is horrible. I spent years in 4-H as a kid. Went to Rock Eagle several times, had a lot of fun, and learned a lot. Loosing this program would be a huge diservice to our youth.

I have been in 4-H for years and it has helped me better my public speaking skills. It has kept me busy and is lots of fun. I really would like to see it stay around. It is a very beneficial program.

The governor did not propose these cuts, The University System of Georgia proposed these cuts in their budget proposal

It seems obvious that the University of Georgia targeted programs like 4-H and county agents because they knew there would be a public outcry. I've emailed some legislators and encouraged them to require the colleges to find the cuts in their own "fat" and not in programs that are for the benefit of the entire state. A good starting point would be a cut in administrative salaries. The argument that high salaries are required to attract the best just doesn't hold up in today's economy. If they want to leave and find a job in another state, let them!

All of this flows from the economic polices of George Bush and his minions. Republicans have been trying to downsize government since Reagan and now they are poised to gut public education,
slash essential services and lead this state back to the 19th century. Its time to vote out the Republican majority in Georgia.

WHATEVER!! Once again an idiot liberal Obama socialist lover who is trying to place the blame on the Bush administration. If you will look, the Democrats are the ones who insisted the banks make home loans for people they KNEW could not pay them back - ANOTHER HANDOUT! That is the majority of the problem. (Explain that one!) Another, let's spread the wealth mentality and the ones who have that mentality are destroying our country!

Say hello to "obamanism"...This is what happens when someone gets use to a handout and then it's stopped.

The state senators and representives should start with pay cuts in their salaries. If we have to trim the budget, let's get all the fat first.

Really? You think just over $17,000 a year for a rep or sen is "fat"? I'll agree we need to trim fat elsewhere, like perhaps additional furloughs or temporary pay decreases for people making over a certain amount at universities (the fact is, even before furloughs there were many of us for whom the 2.5% pay increase didn't even cover our health care increases... so we make less each and every year for doing the same or more work).
