If you are going to be laying people off. Why open another school? Will the kids and staff receive extra perks or funds? THE ECONOMY IS TOO BAD RIGHT NOW! Great idea...But the economy is too BAD!
Charters are usually given for 3-5 years, where an eye is kept on academic performance. If academic performance lags behind comparable public schools, then the “charter” is pulled and the school is closed. They are going to close us before we even open.
So exactly how does this get paid for? Isn't the school system hurting enough on budget? I guess you could just furlough the teachers 4 more days next year. Still doesnt cover how you get new teachers for this school...am I missing something?
They are spending to much money on other things. Don't ask teachers to take furlough days and you are doing all of this other stuff with tax payer money! I AGREE WITH YOU #4
This is so silly! I have always supported our local school system. But the economy is too bad to do this. Just like the Fine Arts Building that gets used once every three months. All that money could have been used to add on a nice addition to the High School or fix the heaters and the primary school. I have to dress my grandchild in extra layers because the heat isn't working half the time. What about computers for kids to take home? Our priority's are in the wrong place!!!!
I am convinced the School Board, thinks money grows on trees, and they can pluck it no matter how it hurts those who have to pay.
This is a performance related program, and I wonder if the system can sustain such a program.
Why would the school buy computers for the kids to take home and tear up? Come on people you have to take some responsibility for your children. The school is not suppose to raise and support them, just teach them!!!!

Okay dummy! You have a great point the schools shouldn't provide education materials for our kids and we should give them all our money until we all go bankrupt! Is that a better plan?(WE PAY TAXES) or I PAY TAXES HERE....Do you? If schools provide textbooks then they should provide computers for kids to use. Make them sign an agreement (If you check this computer out. YOUR Parents will be responsible for replacement if damage occurs. Make the parents sign this form too) IT'S NOT 1970 get with the times. Spalding, Upson and other schools districts already do this. I'm 60+ and I think this would be great!
Have you seen the textbooks when students return them?!?! They are in horrible condition! Textbooks cost about $60 vs. a computer for $300. BIG difference!
Yeah, righhhht... Good luck in collecting the $300 bucks from some -- or, any -- of these parents, when a computer gets abused, smashed, or neglected... Real smart idea, lol.
Yay..anything that will create jobs and also educate our children would be wonderful. The better educated our children are, the more likely it will be that they do not rely on "entitlement" programs to supplement their incomes as adults.
Well I suppose they cant hire staff right now due to the furloughs. I still think it is a great idea that would benefit our future generations and provide them with more opportunities.
If this is true, then how will the teachers take on the load of new students in charter school when they already have too many students in their classes?
That's right. Some classes are already to their max. It's best to wait on this charter school business. Dr. T if you are reading this PLEASE RECONSIDER.
1. If you're going to create this new charter with the budget as bad as it is then you AT LEAST create jobs for those struggling teachers that have a degree but can't find work because of said budget nation wide.
2. If you put it in another school and use current teachers to help teach it then you're simply forcing these already over-worked, under-paid teachers to do even MORE knowing they wont see a single penny more in their paycheck. In fact, this new charter will probably demand cut backs or furlough days to help cover the expenses so they will probably see even less.
Either way I can't see how this charter is a good idea. This should have been something a private institution should have done. It would have been perfect for someplace like Rock Springs Academy to add on. I just can't see how Lamar County budget can work with this. Bad call in my opinion.
Anyone think that maybe by starting this charter that Lamar County will get grant money from the state/federal level and be able to use it for the teachers/buildings? I don't know if thats true or not, if it is great, if not, this is a bad call.
Can that be cleared up Walter, as to where the money will come from?
No, I don't. Them not doing their "homework" is the reason we are in the situation we are in now. Not just local, but state and federal levels. So someone not doing their "homework" here and entering into something that will just end up hurting us in the long run is not that big of a surprise.

I see where Dekalb County is closing 2 of their Charter Schools, for money reasons. I wonder if this school board would have the ineptitude to try to buy one of them.
