A very well written article. Lots of facts and quotes. Thank you.
I only have one small comment to make regarding the phrase "...fear of a government crackdown..." The word 'crackdown' means cracking down or reducing or stopping a negative action or behavior. There is nothing negative, bad, or otherwise non-positive about law-abiding citizens purchasing firearms that they want and can afford.
IMHO, I think a better phrase would have been '...fear of additional gun-control laws...'
If the current laws would be enforced there would be no need for new gun measures. Any new laws simply make it harder for law abiding citizens to purchase a weapon for their protection or sport. The criminals will still be able to acquire these guns they want to ban.
About your mentioning that President Obama "grew up in Chicago", I believe he actually grew up in Hawaii, went to college at Columbia University in New York, and law school at Harvard University in Massachusetts. He only moved to Chicago as an adult, after finishing school.
I agree with you. However, there seems to be some confusion about this aspect of his life. He has written that he grew up in Hawaii and then spent from 6 years old - 10 years old in Indonesia and then back to Hawaii.
However, when listing out his feeling on 2nd amendment laws during his campaign he referred several times to "growing up in Chicago."
Perhaps he was referring to a figurative growing up that was meant to be coming of age rather than literally growing up.
I appreciate your attention to detail and thank you for calling me out on it!
"Lamar has wonderful emergency response and your cell phone can sometimes be as much weapon as you need.."
That is absolutely absurd, FACT is, when you are in fear for your life, calling for help and then waiting just doesn't cut it in a violent confrontation, but the more intelligent of us understand that.
I went through all the deal of getting my weapons permit only after I moved to Lamar County. Believe it or not….The number per 1000 on theft, domestic / violent crime, murder, child abuse and drug use seems to be higher here in Lamar Co. that several of the metro Atlanta counties. Leroy and Billy Bob really have some issues.
