For the second consecutive month, fur flew at the Lamar County commission meeting over a cat trapped at a home and adopted out to what commissioners describe as a good home.

now this is just too funny, what other important business did the commish handle at the taxpayers expense, please it's a stray cat that is off the humane society dole, has a home and is chasing mice..Joyce let it go
I'm confused. If the county improperly took away somebody's pet, why wouldn't they just return the cat to the rightful owner who undoubtedly has an emotional bond to it? There are zillions of homeless cats out there, the new "owner" could easily find another cat who actually needs a home, and one that doesn't already belong to someone else. Isn't this common sense?
Thank you,Walter, for the info you put on line about Majesty, the cat, from last nights County Commissioners meeting. The Humane Society doesn't want the cat back just to get the cat back (Majesty was legally signed over to us), but the County government cannot be allowed to take someone's animal, who wasn't a stray or feral, and do with it whatever they wish. Even though they have an animal ordinance in place, they didn't follow their own rules. If they do it now, they will continue to make up rules as they go along on anything they want. If we did something like this, they wouldn't stand for it. If I had taken someone's animal and given it away, I would have been charged with a crime, possibly taken to court, and probably fined.
Their own ordinance states they will impound the animal for five days. This will give the animal's owner a chance to claim it. If the animal is not claimed within the five days, the county can basically do whatever they please with the animal.
Yes, I questioned them if the cat was still alive or not. Why did they try to hide the location of the cat if it was still alive? Why did we have to use the Open Records Act to obtain this information? When someone tries to hide something, it makes it suspicious and raises many questions. I hope the county commissioners follow through and arrange a meeting with the person in possession of the cat and us so this issue can be resolved. It has been a month and a half since this started. All we want now is to make sure the cat is ok, get the proper papers signed and end this.
Thank you again, Walter, for your fine coverage.
Joyce you are ridiculous. What a waste of time. The cat is not dead, and if the county took it away it had a reason. Quit wasting time and resources for something that only you and maybe one other person cares about. Theres more important things going on in this county that needs attention that isnt being covered by the commissioners or this paper.
I agree, GIVE MS. FARMER HER CAT BACK! That is, unless you have something to hide- and I'm pretty sure that's the case.. poor kitty was prob. put to death too quickly after being brought in. Time to come clean!
I don't believe that anyone came to the shelter and adopted an adult cat that was just taken in or that they have formed any type of bond with it in this short period of time...
Thank you Ms. Farmer for the work you do with homeless kitties. I read once that if a stray cat comes to you, you must take care of it because it took care of you in a former life.
Just give the darn cat back. What is the big freaking deal?
I am so tired of animal haters. I have never in my life met so many people in one community that hates animals as much as the people in Lamar County do. You people would rather shoot an animal then do anything to help it.
Shame on the woman that didn't call Joyce first to come get her cat, because everyone knows the woman knew who the cat belonged to. Seems to me that person is a spiteful, hateful person. Glad she isn't my neighbor.
And just one last thing. Why is Nancy so concerned with who's pictures are in the local news paper? Is she not a commissioner? Don't the commissioners have better things to do then this? I am sure there are other issues our commissioners should be attending to in our community. NOT helping neighbors steal other neighbors pets. Seems to me that Nancy is just being hateful and spiteful too.
Off topic slightly, but there is a longhaired daschund on Redbud Drive that is looking for a home. Does anyone want to rescue this little boy? Is anyone missing a beloved pet?
Joyce Farmer has a valid point. Animal Control should be required to follow their own ordinance and hold animals for the stated number of days to allow owners to reclaim them. I appreciate that the Humane Society is concerned enough to make an issue of this apparently mishandled case.
Yep...another time when they did this a dog was killed before the owner could come and claim it. They need to follow their own policy, that's the point of having policy in place.
4.2 ... hope one of your pets doesn't become missing and you need the humane society's help some day. Got issues???
The cat's rightful owner was KNOWN when the cat was picked up and someone just simply gave her away to a friend instead of impounding ... HELLO, this is THEFT by taking and the new 'owner' has recieved STOLEN property.
Joyce is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. I have read the ordinances and they WERE NOT FOLLOWED. I wish an attorney felt compelled to sue the litter out of all responsible in this issue pro bono. The humane society uses all of it's funds for assisting others with the spay/neuter clinics and feeding hungry animals.
Nancy, we voted you in, we can vote you out. DO THE RIGHT THING!!! What the hell is wrong with following the ordinances we have on the books,,,don't just become one of the "others" who were commissioners of our district. I voted for your integrity,,now use it!!
Walter - Thanks for your accurate reporting of Tuesday night's County Commissioners meeting and our continued battle to learn the fate of Majesty. I do publicity for the BLC Humane Society and one of my duties is to distribute accurate information about animal issues. In that light I would like to offer a definition of a "feral" cat. A feral cat is an offspring of a stray or abandoned cat. Since feral cats are raised without human contact, they revert to a wild nature and are undomesticated. They form colonies where there is shelter and a food source such as near a dumpster or behind a restaurant. We have several feral colonies in Barnesville with the most well known one being behind Hardees. In some states, feral colonies can be registered and protected. The most famous feral colony is in Key West, Florida. The cats are descendants of cats owned by Ernest Hemingway. A "stray" cat is a cat who has been abandoned by its owners or has wandered away on its own and become lost. Stray cats tend to be scared but still trusting, unlike feral cats. Where is this leading? Majesty was neither a feral cat or a stray cat. Majesty was cared for by a older lady who had spent close to $300 for his veterinary care. But let's forget that Majesty is cat for a minute. The animal in question could have been a prized hunting dog, a valuable horse or a just a child's much loved mutt. The point is that these animals are someones property. We have been told that if you feed it, its yours. Under this definition, feeding an animal makes it your property. The county does not have the legal right to dispose of a citizen's property without due course. Since this unfortunate situation has occured, I have been shocked by the number of animal haters there are in our community. Some people seem to delight in telling me how much they hate cats and how they shot them. My answer is that as Christians we are told that we are to be good stewards of this planet and its inhabitants. Each person must answer for his own actions but I hazard a guess that God is an animal lover. Some people have said they are sick of hearing about Majesty. My question is how would you feel if the animal is question was yours? Joyce Farmer would fight for your right to have your animal returned. This whole situation hasn't made anyone look good. The humane society doesn't want negative publicity. In fact we work hard to make the community aware of the positive things we do like our low cost spay/neuter program to reduce the number of "feral" and "stray" animals. We want to make Barnesville and Lamar County a better place for both people and animals. Those who want to slam Joyce, ask her what attempts were made to settle this before it got to this point. She will be happy to tell you. Were you at the county commissioners meetings? As to those who says this is a waste of taxpayer's money, we are taxpayers too. Ideally government is to represent all the people even those who are labeled fanatic animal lovers.
Very well said. I cannot believe this has not been resolved and the comissioners should be charged as well for their efforts to keep illegal activities alive.
You people are crazy! I heard some people talking today and they know the people who got the cat and said if Joyce Farmer or any of her followers show up at their house they will call the sheriff. All of you people are crazy! And let's don't forget what Malry went through when Joyce Farmer refused to give her dog back, after she knew it belonged to Malry.
Let's discuss the little dog Mallory had. It belonged to us, yes. That is why we were called when someone found her. She had on the Humane Society's rabies tag. No tag at all with Mallory's name on it. This dog was adopted out with another little dog. They were supposed to stay together. Not to be separated. Well, one ended up in my yard. I asked the man where the little girl was. He said he'd given it away. I told him he had to get it back. Well, he never did. I kept getting the runaround. When she was found, I placed her in an elderly lady's home. She loved her. She was with another dog. She was so happy. Then Mallory came around looking for the dog, putting signs all over my fence and vehicles. She found out where the dog was and practically jerked it out of the elderly lady's arms. Yes, we could have gone to court about the little dog. The elderly lady has a heart condition and we didn't want to involve her in an emotional court battle. So, we let it go. We didn't pursue it. Mallory didn't try to hide the location of the dog as the county tried to hide the whereabouts of Majesty. We know where the dog is and it seems to be fine. The people can keep Majesty, the cat, but first we want to see him, then he's theirs forever. Do you think that's too much to ask?
I want to clear up a few misleading comments about my adventure when Poochie went missing and experiance with Joyce Farmer.
I called Joyce Farmer the day Poochie went missing and left one of many unanswered voice mails describing Poochie and how upset I was that my Baby was missing. I also called Dolly Good Puppy, the Herald Gazette; to place ads to aide with my search. Joyce Farmer never returned my phone calls and I have not spoken to here to this day. Yes, I did put flyers on her fence and vehicles; I had to attempt to contact her; the local Humane Society; about my missing dog.
Isn't that what they do rescue and try to reunite lost pets with their owners?
The next day I rode the local streets searching for Poochie on my lunch hour and after work until dark asking if anyone I ran across saw my dog. I did hand out business cards because the first 20 times I wrote my name and phone number down it made my had cramp.
Two days later I received many greatly appreciated phone calls; from handing out business cards;that gave me bits and pieces of the where abouts of my dog. I phoned one such lead and discovered that she actually had Poochie and identified her by the number on her rabies tag. She actually had Poochies for one day and she place my dog with a new owner. I was informed that she owned the dog and of the agreement between the original parties concerning the other dog and was told I could not have my dog back.
I was the 3rd person in line to receive the dog and had no idea of any such agreement.
Now mind you I called the Humane Society two days before, left flyers on Joyce Farmer's fence and vehicles, placed ads in the newspaper and it was on the internet news services and my dog was given away to another.
I was upset by this news and went to the Barnesville Police Dept to seek assistance in resolving this unbelivable nightmare. The Officer called the woman that gave away my dog and she proceeded to tell him the same thing. She was advised that the dog belonged to me I knew nothing of an agreement and to return the dog. She refused and I was told my only recourse was to swear out a warrent on Monday, which I fully intended to do. Later that afternoon I received another phone call and I was told of Poochie's were abouts. I went to the location and politley asked if she had my dog and if I could she her. I broke down into tears when I held Poochie in my arms and politley asked if I could have my dog. How could she refuse me this was a kind and decent woman and she agreeded to let me take Poochie home.
There was no jerking or loud words or anything like that going on what so ever. Her rabies tag and collar were also missing. The kind elderly lady did make the comment that she did not want to get involved in this mess and this over reacting that was taking place. I told her I did not know what all the fuss was about either, and still don't! Now why is this still being brough up I just wanted my dog? Why the comments about listening to my fairy tales and imtimidating people?. Was I being punished for where I worked?
I want to Thank the many kind hearted folks that eat breakfast at Pasttime, the internet news services and several good friends. Thank you all from the bottom of mine and Poochie's hearts.
I would love to have the other dog she was supposed to be adopted with Mrs. Farmer, if u still have him.
Also in response I searched for my dog on my own time and if Anonymous really knew what they were talking about I do not nor have I ever intimidated people. My MaMa and Daddy raised me better than that.
Hey Malry, now I know how to spell your name. I'm glad you have told your side of the story. There is always two sides to everything. Sometimes three sides. I'm glad you love Poochie. Her name was originally Taco, I believe. Also, please put a tag on her with your name on it. If you'd done this in the first place, we never would have been called and we'd still be looking for her. I'm glad you and she are doing well. Good luck to you and Poochie.
What about the other dog? Was it really put out on Yatesville Rd to be run over? I would love to adopt the dog and Poochie would love a play mate.

I hate to bother you again but what happened to the other dog? Was it really put out on Yatesville Rd? I am very interested in the well being of the dog and would like to possibly adopt it.
If this was your pet (cat, dog, hamster) and the city illegally took it and gave it to a new owner what would you do? The law is for every citizen and when its broken, fines should be put in place and actions should be accounted for.
If that was Malry's dog, why did the vet who did it's rabies call the humane society, because they were the owner's. And why did Malry use county resources to print fliers, and county time to travel around to intimidate people, to try and find where the dog was?? And what about the dog's brother who was with her, someone dumped him out on Yatesville Road, I guess hoping he would be hit by a car.
Seems you've been listening to Malry's fairy tales too long.
Why was there a county vehicle with "Re-elect George Brown" stickers on it parked across from the early voting place Monday morning? Someone should have broken out a measuring tape.
I am an animal lover and would not like for anyone to take my animal from me. However, the problem I see here is the county definitely broke their own rules and if they can do this for one animal and find a "good" home, why can't they do that for numerous others they "kill". I'm sure there were lots of nice, pretty, sweet and very loving animals killed that could have been placed in a home. Does the animal control try? No, I really think not. Thank God for people like Joyce and the Humane Society and the Dolly GoodPuppy and the other ladies in another group that help our animals in Lamar County. PEOPLE GET YOUR ANIMAL SPAYED AND NEUTERED TO HELP CUT DOWN ON OUR UN-WANTED PET POPULATION.
Whoa. There's some serious tap dancing around the truth here. It's my understanding the cat belonged to a hoarder who had way too many cats, and animal control was called BY HER to trap most of the cats, and the animal control traps were in place. The Majesty cat was in a neighbor's basement (uninvited), and the animal control officer got the cat from there. The Humane Society had been notified, but no one came to help with the cats, so animal control was doing what the lady wanted...removing the cats.
If Ms. Farmer had "paperwork" on Majesty, why had she not already taken the cat off the property? How can she be so sure the cat in question is really Majesty? She hasn't seen this cat, has she?
It was widely known the volume of cats in this neighborhood was a nuisance, and the owner of the cats was trying to correct the situation...with animal control's help.
In my opinion, it was an act of kindness on animal control's part not to take the cat to the pound.
There's no fault to place in this case. Move on.
Hey, if you've got so much to say, why don't you identify yourself? I'm not ashamed of what I'm saying, but you must be. No, the lady isn't a hoarder. Guess you learned a new word, hoarder, from that TV show. Anyways, she didn't have fifty, forty, or thirty. She's now below twenty with our help. We put out traps at the same time as the animal control. The lady wanted me to find homes for the ones trapped since they were bothering the neighbor. Animal control said they'd give them to me if they caught any so we could find homes. This way the lady knew they wouldn't be killed. She told animal control that she wanted the Humane Society to get the cats, not them. It doesn't matter if she signed Majesty over to us the day before, that day or whenever, it belonged to her. It was not a stray. It was someone's cat. Now it belongs to the Humane Society. The cat should have been taken to the shelter when it was picked up, not taken to someone's house. It never made it to the shelter. The ordinance says five days impoundment, not take it and give it away before the five days. Go ahead and let your county government change the rules as they go along. You deserve whatever you get. Right now it's an animal, next time it might be your land. Anonymous, you probably don't even live in Lamar County.
Joyce,
Thank you for sticking up for the rightful owner of Majesty.
And you are correct...1st they'll take the cat...then one day it will be something else. ALL elected people are entrusted with power the people have given them. To abuse this power in any way, is a breach of that trust and they should be held accountable regardless of how minor the infraction is. One only has to look at our state and federal governments to see what happens when power is abused.
The rightful owner of the cat is not a hoarder or a crazy person. She is a woman with compassion who helped these animals. Often times she spent her own money to get these cats healthy, neutured and fed. It was a situation that got out of control and she asked for help. Her punishment for being a compassionate animal lover was to have her property illegally taken from her.
To all those whining - what have you all done to get involved helping people like Joyce?
Here's an idea: Rather than spending all the energy typing your pro/con comments, call Joyce and offer to help her out one week. Get first hand knowledge what is going on, then come back and express yourself to everyone.
Sure more than one can call. Joyce can even put you in contact with other fine citizens already working. You will surely be able to be used for something other than sarcasm. Later on you can go back to your keyboard and complain about yourself too.
Just my thoughts. Barnesville needs a strong Director to run its Animal control Facility. It should not be run like it is. Never have I ever heard of a county commisinor or city/county manager going on someone property. If they had well trained competent officers they would not have a need for other county/city officials who are also not trained to go. If the commisinors, managers, wants to go on people personal property they need to go fill out an application and go to animal control school to be certified as an animal control officer.
The Humane Society, Dolly GoodPuppy, or any other rescue group also should only be a support/volunteer group not an agent of the Animal shelter. From what I can see several things was violated by all parties involved. Barnesville needs to wake up its 2010 not 1910 and get rid of the Good-ole-boy system for the better of the community. Punish who needs to be punished and be done with it.
Their own ordinance states they will impound the animal for five days. This will give the animal's owner a chance to claim it. If the animal is not claimed within the five days, the county can basically do whatever they please with the animal.

After reading both articles, Mrs. Thrash might need to be replace since she doesn't want to go by the county ordinance.

It's pretty obvious who you are involved with in your rambling nonsense.
Also, there is no hoarder provision in the county ordinance that she was in violation of.
