The murder of Donna Johnson on July 16, 1984 changed Barnesville-Lamar County for good.

Many - particularly those in the Piedmont community - began locking doors to their homes which had never before seen a latch.

Firearms permits sold like lemonade on a hot day.

I would love to read more about this case. I am very interested in why no one has been held accountable and who helped ensure that. It's a very sad day when people allow evil to triumph. It's sadder when those charged with protecting us fail to do so.

The murder was bad. But something equally bad is that someone knows something about it and won't come forward.

That's going to be a difficult explanation when you're standing before God explaining your accountability.

Better to do it now. Late is better than never and there is no good reason for "why" when you're standing in judgement in the end.

Surely law enforcement has a good idea who did this, but making a case out of it is probably unlikely, if evidence was destroyed.

I lived in Barnesville when this took place I was a teenager and remember hearing the story. I was a friend of one of Donna's cousins. It was a horrible awakening. We were accustom to leaving doors unlocked pryor to that insodent. It shook up everyone.

From what I hear, nothing was destroyed on purpose. The crime scene itself was trampled by everyone before evidence was collected. I also heard that they even used an "used" body bag to put her body in, therefor contaminating all bodily evidence. Think it was raining too....Anyway, Im not sure any of this is correct, just things ive heard over the years.

If all evidence was contaminated, then it doesnt matter who they think did it. How could they ever prove it? They cant. Sadly, thats why this case has gone no where. Has there been an attempt to see if there is any DNA evidence?

I cannot count all the newspaper columns that I have read in my long life. I can remember the one that grabbed me and would not turn loose. Published May 16, 2010 in The Pike Journal Reporter, appropriately titled, "We All Failed Miss Beulah." If you missed it, you should call and order a copy or buy one at the paper office. I will guarantee you... that is THE COLUMN that created new leads in the brutal murder of Donna Johnson for the GBI. I hope God lets me live to see the person(s) that caused Miss Beulah and Donna's many loved ones so much pain, suffer real justice. It will never be justice because you cannot replace a loved one. It has been a quarter of a century that one or more scumbags have carried on in their life after brutally taking Donna's. If you know any details, no matter how trivial they may seem, please contact the GBI. Evidently, the local law offices do not really care if they Failed Miss Beulah. I appreciate Walter's heartfelt efforts and concerns and I truly hope that anyone who has any facts makes that call to the GBI. Just imagine your daughter being snatched brutally away from life and then living twenty-six long years before you finally are blessed with your own death to find peace. Make the call...do it for yourself, do it for Miss Beulah.

Scoop has done a great service by keeping this in the public eye.

However, his effort was completely negated by the quote in the print edition of the HERALD-GAZETTE from our illustrious "brought back" sheriff Larry Waller.

"We will never close that case"

Well now, isn't that nice. Nothing like a positive outlook. Seems like another case, the BuggyTown bomber, has gone unsolved as well. I remember stepping out of the motel shower in Winfield Alabama to see the astonishing sight of Waller on CNN proclaiming he would stop at nothing to find the culprit of that crime.

Do I dare suppose we will never close that case either? Somehow I think so.

Tell me again what a great idea it was to "bring back" this clown?

huh the bomber case was solved. apparently the individuals were children of the upper class of barnesville and everythuing was kept low key. if im not wrong the barnesville leadership abandonded ship that day and left the fate in the hands of the once upon a time fire chief. as i understand it he did a good job of representing the runaway leadership and solving the case.

Sheila - Truth does not vary. People vary in their telling of it. I do want you to know, that the Waller boys were not born into wealth. Every one of them went to school and college and educated themselves and were able to EARN their own way by WORKING. They have done well and I know each of them to be honest and good men. All big families do NOT know what real love is, that can not be a blanket statement. I don't think you can say this because I am from a family of 14. I love each and every one of my siblings and would do anything for them -- but because we are from a big family does not mean that a family of one or two knows less about loving each other. Also, the Donna Johnson case has never been closed. It is still being actively investigated to this day, but not on the front pages of the BHG. I do think some things do not need to be plastered across the paper as it might interfere with any investigation. I doubt Walter will allow this comment as I have tried to put it on here before and he removed it. At the forum, Buice told about what went on at the Republican meetings. I was there and he was NOT. I confronted him afterward, along with several other republican pary members, and he looked at me and said, "
so, I lied." With God as my witness, these were his exact words. If you recall, there were times on the previous blog when he entered other peoples residence and searched it without a search warrant, according to their blog, he told them, he did not need a search warrant, he was the "damn sherrif." I have often wondered why he had to have a sheriff's car following him when he went to run. Did we pay for this service? He also had his body guard at the forum who eased down the side of the room when Joe stood up to speak. What is he afraid of?

Lastly, under Joe's watch, there is a considerable amount of money that is missing or unaccounted for. I don't know who took it, but anyone can confirm that it is missing. I don't think our county can afford another reign of Buice maffia.

Lamar County was turned into the laughing stock of law enforcement. No law enforcement dept anywhere around wanted to work with LC. Do you know how many fits he would have on a daily basis? How he down graded everyone around him? How he isolated his deputies? Do you not remember the turn over rate when he was in office? What LW did does not even compare. LW did it to prove a point with the county com. and he proved his point. Between that and the bombs, your gonna drive yourself crazy!!!

No one is complaing about Larry Waller. He does the job by the book. Think he proved that with Grier Smith. Too bad the Grand Jury was made up of a bunch of morons. And by the way, the GS crap happend under joes watch and what was done....NOTHING. I guess he had enough bad publicity with the money missing and didnt want to add to it. He couldnt get things accomplished when he was in, why would anyone thing he could if he was re-elected? Thank you to Walter, Laura, and staff of the Barnesville Herald Gazette for all you have done to keep Donna's case alive. This is by far the best coverage that has been given to the case. It is our hope and prayer that justice might possibly be served because of this coverage and the diligence of those that have tried through the years to bring peace and closure to Donna's murder. God bless you all and thanks again for doing what you can to bring attention to Donna's case.

The print edition of the paper kept me in my chair for over an hour last night. Such great reporting. I particularly liked getting everyone's "lookback" of that night 26 years ago.
This is the type of coverage I like to see in a newspaper.
At the very least, this is a lesson in sensitivity toward a family's pain and frustration when a case cannot be brought forward due to circumstances beyond the family's and perhaps law enforcement's control as well.

Here is what I have gathered over the past 26 years. I remember when Donna was killed, her husband put up a reward and made public appearances to appear real interested in finding the murderer. I also remember thinking, "If I committed the murder or arranged it, I would put up a reward also because it will not be paid." Then The Atlanta Constitution had a spill about Jimmy's last sweet words to Donna before he left for work that morning, they were planning on having a child, they were busy renovating a home, etc. Then I read Becky's (Donna's sister) article in The Herald Gazette yesterday. Something AIN'T right...and I believe Becky. Her version points out that: She (Becky) was at her Mom and Dad's house for four long hours with a lot of praying going on. Jimmy called at 8:30 to say that Donna's body had been found. But he did not go to the parent's house that night nor the next day. Jimmy also isolated himself and his family from Donna's family at the funeral. Some mighty strange stuff here...this answer would answer a lot in my mind...Jimmy, are you still willing to put up that reward?

A quarter of a century is a long time. People with a conscience, heart or soul may have aged enough to honestly hurt for the pain that Donna's Mother and Father must have suffered. Someone out there knows who done this to Donna. Maybe they have children, or even a daughter, of their own. How can they NOT make that call to the GBI after twenty-six long years. I am one of those people that believe one is rewarded or punished for the deeds they do in life. It could have been my child....it could have been a loved one of anyone reading this blog. But it wasn't, it was Miss Beulah's. If I knew the name of the murderer(s), you can bet...I would make that call. Because just maybe, God, Karma, Justice, call it what you will, will hopefully keep me from hearing the news that Donna's loved ones had to face. I have Grandchildren now....do you? Please call people...Miss Beulah knows now but she died to find out by asking Donna. I just cannot imagine the sleepless night that lady suffered. I would have been suspicious of every man I met on the street..did he kill my Donna? Make the call, please. You should do it for Becky now..........and yourself.

I hope the SOB(S) that murdered Donna Johnson are processed just as I have reflected in my blogs here and on the Pike County Journal Reporter site. There are at least two people out there that obviously want this case solved, Freddie boy. That would be Jimmy Johnson and Becky Peterman. she laughs most of the day as most happy folks do. i hope sheila never stops the blogging, it would be a blogging crash down. the simple truth is hard to swallow for some people. i also urge anyone with any info on donnas murder come forth now and clear heart, if you own one. i feel like this can be solved and hope this stays alive and feels of a dagger in the murders and the ones that hide the truth.

This was and still is a horrible crime and a case that has not been solved. What happened to Donna was horrific and the person or persons who did it should hope and pray that they don't get caught because there will be justice and it may very well not be by law enforcement. I went to school with Donna and knew her well as a friend and to know the person or persons who did this are still walking around free just makes me ill. Joe Buice was a fairly good sherrif and he also knew her personally I hope that whoever the sherrif may be at the time that this case is solved will make damn sure that the culprits don't know another nights peace. They should be tortured beyond endurance and then torture them some more. Thank you Walter for keeping up with this case and all the great reports that you publish.

Yes indeed, Walter. Keep the case alive until the murderer is caught. I am sure everyone wants the guilty person(s) caught. Anyone who does not want the case reactivated must have a reason. If there was a magical way of knowing who "without a doubt" committed or contributed to the cause of Donna's death, I WISH their justice would be processed in the same way Donna was treated. Now, I patiently await as all the bloggers explain how God is the judge. Well, I know that, but God is really busy right now and would appreciate some help from anyone who has FACTS! I had a person ask me today why do I think Jimmy was not in the photo shown above. At many of my own family reunions, we took pictures of our immediate family, which did not include spouses. That would be my guess. I guess if Jimmy remembers the reunion, he must have been invited. This would be a good time for me to toss in my little words of wisdom. Families do not get together as they did years ago. That is sad. Plan reunions and get your family photos while you have the opportunity. I lost a sister and mother in a 40 day time span. If only we had gathered as a family more often...but we didn't. This must be a special photo for Becky and her (I assume) two children in the picture.

He certainly was invited and he chose not to accompany his wife to the reunion. It was a family reunion that none of will forget. We made a lot of pictures of all the families that were present and we will treasure them forever. It was a great reunion but who knew that just a short time afterwards that Donna would be killed in such a brutal way. God help the person who took this precious person from her family.

Just remember this is not about who the sheriff is but the one whose life was taken from her family. It is the DA who will not bring this to a grand jury. He has been told there is evidence "not a theory" and he will not do anything. There is motive, there is evidence, and there is a suspect but still there is no action on the part of the DA.

I dont believe you. It would be a win win situitation for all parties if that were the case. Remember, Milam was blamed for all of the past administrations blunders. If Milam thought the case winnable, then would he not look good too? Just a thought. Im glad more money was not wasted.

The DA is the one who has to make the decision to bring the case before a grand jury. He is not accepting of the evidence not "theory", the suspect, or the motive in the case. Let a grand jury decide if there is a case. He has completely ignored what the experts have had to say and unfortunately he is the one calling the shots at this time. Everyone pray for closure and justice. It is not about money being wasted it is about a crime that is unsolved and no amount of money can replace the life that was lost 26 years ago.

Walter, how about getting Larry Wallers opinion on the evidence. Is it true that there is evidence pointing to a suspect who had motive to commit this horrible crime? And does it go beyond speculation. Im sure LW has looked at all of this and if the above is true, then why not pressure the DA? So instead of printing about Buice, get a statement from Waller.

Has anyone tried to see if Channel 5 would add it to their cold case file? Or America's Most Wanted? All they could do would be to say no, and they might possibly say yes.

it has been scheduled to air on 20/20 twice and has been changed now to sept. hopefully the post poning is due to some new evidence. so many people are helping now and coming forth.who ever did this is still around and has or will do it again. could be your neighbor and staulking your kids or grandchildren waiting for moment to act. it is too late then. the perverts that did this is animal on inside. and along with anyone one that could help but do not want to get envolved.if it were your loved one, you would think different.
