Getting that check started

I was married when I had my son, who was unplanned, my husband at the time didn't work, and had a drug problem. When I became pregnant I kicked him out, got a divorce, and made it on my own. I got no government assistance because at being paid $10 an hour I made way too much. I received the pell and hope grant, I put myself back in school with a full time job, paying all my own bills and daycare for my son. It wasn't easy, I even worked an extra job on the weekends to make ends meet, there wasn't money to "get my nails, toes, & hair done" or to have a new car, or even looking for a man, but that wasn't important. I set out to give my child more, and I now have an associated degree in business, working on my second degree in healthcare. In putting my needs second to my child I now have more than I've ever had, including the best husband in the world. It's possible as long as you have your priorities straight, and a positive attitude to go with it.

Seems like the ones getting a check are smarter than the ones that elect politicians into office and watch their hard earned tax dollars being given to a system that the politicians perpetuate...Sounds like lunacy to me.

Abstinence only education is a huge FAIL.

A woman who has a child and not married should be required to name the father and have it proved by DNA before receiving any government funds. I am for the child having what is needed but it takes two to reproduce and there are too many good for nothing sperm donors taking advantage of young girls with low self confidence. They just walk away exspecting society to pick up the bill.

You can put them behind bars if not owning up to their responsibility. To bring a child into this world and following through with the those responsibilities required to bring that child to young adulthood is the most serious of all responsibilities in one's life.

my wife and i were behind a couple in griffin a fews years back in the winn dixie. they paid for five buggies of groceries with food stamps. The older guy went out to get the car... your guessed it a fine volvo station wagon..we followed them... they then went to the dry cleaners and picked up
their clothes and handed the cashier one hundred and fifty bucks... they then went to the liquor store at sunnyside and the cashier already had their order boxed up....i snuck in and got one beer and observed him pay over two hundred dollars for fine liquor.... we followed them home and hey drove to fayette county. They pulled up to a fine home and grandma in an apron ran out with five small kids to help unload the volvo. Found out later the grandma was a hired domestic help. As i went to fayettevile on business serveral years later i drove by the house a realter guy was in the yard and i asked about the family...he said the lady worked for the state at the employment office in griffin and the husband worked for the spalding mental health board...they had never made a house payment since he sold them the house... it took five years to get them out. he was a professional squatter... they now live in a condo in fairburn and i have to tear down this house and sell the lot because they did so much damage to it i cannot have it insured...there is a word for people like this.

Society as a whole should shun these people. I work with two people who get paid more than I do, and guess what they receive food stamps. They not only pay for their meals at the store with food stamps but are proud to do it. This just makes me ill because I know for a fact that they get paid more than I do and yet I still can't buy groceries because they get my hard earned tax dollars. Not only does one get food stamps but her husband works under the table makes about four hundred if not more a week and then he also gets unemployment. This injustice should be investigated. And they should be made to refund all the money that they get. It is time for the middle classed people to take a stand a say "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH". I also know of a family that has played the DEFACS workers so much that it has become a way of life and the grandchildren are riding the same bandwagon. My son has had to move back in with us he works hard at home and the neighborhood and holds down a regular job. Then at the end of the week what he has made goes to pay child support. Now I am not saying that he should not have to pay child support but she is now getting full disability the children get a check and he still has to do without. NO JUSTICE THERE!!!!
What ever happened to parents that taught self respect and disipline to allow the young girls and boys to just go out and lay around with every person they come in contact with, make a baby and jump on the welefare train. I agree with one of the bloggers about the mothers, that they should have to name every man they slept with and then have everyone of them take a DNA test if they are the father then go after them to pay child support instead of making the taxpayer foot the bill for their mistake. Birth control is available YOU SHOULD USE IT!!! or pay the consequences.

We need to get rid of income taxes and increase the sales tax. Everyone consumes.

Everyone knows all the corruption of people abusing this system. The thing is, HOW can it be STOPPED?? WHAT can WE do? I KNOW that the people working for DFACS *KNOWS* what is going on and lets it happen. But WHY?? Are they THAT scared of these sorry people ?? If DFACS would put their foot down and REFUSE this crap, what would happen? Would the sorry people SUE them?? How do WE get DFACS to DO this? After all, they are doing this with OUR money! And, WE are PAYING their salaries !!

Agree, seen a DEAC'S worker talking to a lady about her "Appointment for food stamps" at the nail place while the little one was running around and she had her hair did, nails done and getting her feet done! Guess she was going shopping next.

You don't know what you are talking about.

All social programs amount to 35% of the GDP. The largest share of that by far is social security and Medicaid. About 5-10% is private. If you cut off all the welfare checks you would get rid of 10% of the burden compared to our GDP.

Welfare benefits adjusted to GDP have been on a steady decline since the late 70's except for a little peak late in Reagan's term.

This is all documented fact that anyone can check and confirm.

It will probably go up now because of the recession that started toward the end of Bush's term, and continued and peaked shortly after Obama took office.

The thing killing us is foreign spending for consumer goods, and the two "wars" we started and all the increases in security while giving tax cuts to people earning over $200K a year.

Do you mean Obama ended the reforms after first coming into office after ponzi schemers and wall street crooks gambled our nation into debt and caused a massive amount of people to lose their jobs and pensions? Meanwhile, these same crooks are still running banks and getting billions in bonuses. People love that money.

we cant punish a child because her mom is not working....i can see not giving a person who want work a check...but you cant withhold that check if she is responsible for feeding a family.....get real we are a christian nation and cant let people starve just because they are poor and cant work...if we can afford to send food to africa and can afford to kill people in middle east; we can afford to feed and clothe our own people

An american citizen can obtain fake documents and do this as well. However, it is not advised.

Yes, but you have to admit that you really messed up. You and your child are going to pay an enormous price for an ill responsible mistake that is made all too often. I am sure you will do your best to fulfill your parental responsibilities but a single parent household can only do so much. We as tax payers will directly and indirectly be required to make up at least some of the difference if it is possible. What I do know is a child that has two responsible parents has a much greater fighting chance to make it in this world that one that doesn’t. Secondly, fathers should be held financially accountable and measures should be made to insure that it happens. This is not being done!

Listen lady, I raised two myself and they have grown to make me proud so I know what it takes.
I am not saying your child doesn't have a chance but the numbers easily show the odds are against it and not only that within the last few decades, unless you are born into money thae chances of living the American dream is rapidly fading away. That being said, a child needs every resource available and that means what two parents can give. Some times love is not enough.
