This is what happens when government (even local government) is out of control. If you and I operated on an overspent checkbook we would be in trouble. Government just continues spending without care and then tells the people they are in trouble and must raise taxes. If taxes are raised, everyone needs to make sure that local government is paying their full share without special built-in loop holes. And if you think local is all we have to worry about - wait until the federal government hits you up. Because of their speding, they say every American (even your children) owe 119,000.00 (that's thousand) dollars to pay the 13 Trillion debt.
PS - It's not Bush's fault. His debt was just approaching 1 Trillion. Democrats have spent us all in the poor house. Replace them all in November.
It baffles me that the amount of property taxes, I would assume is the largest part of the income, havent changed, yet the so called costs have skyrocked. Does some of the department heads they do not have to have an increase every year to keep their jobs? I would be inclined to be more rewarding to those who attempt to save money, and cut costs rather than spend everything, and want more.
Yes, it is appears our government at all levels is in dire need of change, by any means necessary.
This area can NOT have it both ways. Either entice industry of all types and reap the benefits of jobs and increased tax base. Or continue to listen to whiners about "smells" and such while living next to an INDUSTRIAL PARK.
One textile mill is already gone and other is barely still here. When it goes (...and it will when Obamacare kicks in), you can look at an even more depleted tax base.
The property owners here CAN NOT be bled any more. A tax revolt with the possibility of violence can not, and should not be ruled out.
Wake up local elected officials! Would be a shame to wake up at 2 AM with angry citizens in your bedroom seeking an interview.
Instead of increasing taxes, how about making decisions that do not result in expensive lawsuits which are always lost and waste our money on lawyer fees?
that goes for me too and I am sure you might be sorry if you go to any of the elected official's bedroom at 2am - you know you just made terroristic threats. boy we sure do have some bad $%@ "anonymous" people in this county !!!
Please cut Old jail museum, Service center, Senior center, Public health, Dfacs, Uga Extension, Conservation admin, Recreation and ag arena, public works, and Emergency Manage jobs. Please. Need to hire more officers and firefighters.
Has this "person" who wants to close the Old Jail Museum & Archives ever visited the site?
The county had the facility in the county budget, but NO money has ever gone into our account...it is a matter on paper only! It is misleading and unfair to state that we are receiptents of county funds. We are in a county owned building, but have NO paid employees, no benefits, no travel expenses and no janitorial service.

The crazy thing is this same scenario is playing out in just about every county in Georgia...the entire country too. I don't know how it will play out and what the ramification will be to the average citizen but most of us will leave to see America go bankrupt. Governments acted just like most of us during the boom...they didn't think it was ever going to end so they spent instead of saved. Now governments are like retired NFL stars...busted because they can't pay for what they bought, or agreed to fund, during the good times and now the good time money is gone. It's not any one persons fault and no single move is going to fix it. Filling in a dirt hole isn't as hard as digging it but it still takes time & effort.
The value of property has dropped by 50 per cent in some parts-am not sure what the percentage is here in Lamar but I do know that it's significant. I'm not so naive to think that property taxes will be adjusted accordingly; but, please folks, the Republican Party owns Georgia top to bottom. Spare us the bellyacheing about Obama. The Republican Party put us in this situation, Republican politicians are still in office, and they are desperate to blame someone else.
So help me here. Which part of my post is based on ignorance? Has property value not dropped like a rock in recent years? Are we about to get a property tax cut? Do the Republicans not own the state? Aren't most of the public offices held by Republicans? Do you usually just declare everyone who disagrees with you to be ignorant?
Only when they are doing it: Your basis is echoing what all liberal democrats shout. "It's the republican's fault". Well howdaudo! Truth is; it is all of their faults. Politicians are obsessed with holding power and your needs are second. Government is making every attempt to make the people fear government. Had you ever witnessed a true socialist/communist environment you might understand. It sounds like utopia when you read about it but living it is a nightmare.
The United States is a republic. It is making every effort to drive itself toward socialism yet history shows socialism is a failure. China is a good example for people who can see. China’s economy is growing by leaps and bounds because China is turning its sites on and practicing capitalism.
Additionally you apparently lack reading comprehension skills. I didn’t say you were ignorant. I said you were echoing it. There is a difference. And yes; property values have dropped; but not 50%. And yes; government will likely raise taxes based on pre-devalued property tax appraisal. Next they will hoodwink the people by identifying devalued property values but saying they won’t raise the millage. Why? Because they already did! There is your government screwing and warm fuzzy all rolled into one.
I went to the commissioners meeting yesterday. I listened to some good ideas , and I herd some that I did not like. I came away with knowledge the people in charge are concerned about raising taxes. There were good ideas of consolidating departments. Others just said raise the millage rate and be done with it. Those I did not care for.
I was told the school system is setting on a $7,000,000.00 surplus. This told me we have been gouged by the school tax. The surplus of the school system is about the budget for the whole county.Something definitely needs to be changed in this department.
They need to stop abusing the old, and the people on fixed incomes, especially those of us that do not have a child in the school system.
Over all, I think the commissioners are trying their best to get us out of this mess the easiest way out. I would only add,do not spend money we do not have this comming year.Just like my budget, if I do not have the money I DON'T buy. This should be for the gov. also, no matter what.
Why punish county employees for the inability of the commisioners to manage this county? have they taken paycuts? furlow the county admistrator, for good! This would save alot of money. This has happened under his watch right?
It doesn't matter how much the school system has in surplus. A surplus of a dollar is just good management, if it is in the millions, that is just awesome management. Don't be down on School Board and Supt. because they did their job, the Commissioners need to see if School Board will give them lessons on how it's done.
The county spent (please correct me if I am wrong) around $5,000,000. on the high school sports complex which I am sure will be an ongoing expense for years to come. A leveled
15 acres with some grass and a Butler building would have surficed. The mentality that says
"my children must have the best" (at taxpayers expense) has to cease. Asking, or requiring, people without children to pay for other people's children's "gold plated" education & sports facilities has to be limited to what is necessary, not what the elilist say that they "deserve". Having a cutoff age for paying school taxes certainly makes sense to me.
The county gave away a vehicle barn to the school system, didn't we?
The county gave away the money from the ag authority to the city, didn't they?
The county built several small fire stations and never manned them, and now wants to build a new station. The old building that was unrepairable is successfully repaired and working.
The county moved into a building that required major work and was major money to fix. While they needed more room, that wasn't a wise investment.
If we look statistically at the national debt and other indicators, we are no better off with republicans than democrats. The trends are the same through both and never waver. The jobs leave because of unfair trade, not because of taxes or Obama care or anything else. Jobs leave because our government, republicans and democrats alike, have no guts and no long term vision. They are afraid to stand up for us against corporations and lobbyists and foreign governments. Both parties have ruined us.
Everyone making a response about this budget, should not only have your say on this reply page but make time some how to make the next meeting this comming Tuesday evening at 7:00pm at the court house.
The commissioners were wanting ideas from all of us. My hope is there will be standing room only with people that have some good ideas to help us out of this mess. Everyone should make the sacrifice to be there because it affects all of us.
The most massive tax increase in the history of our country is comming at us like a freight train starting 1/01/2011, and that is not counting what will happen at the local level. Just on Federal alone every man, woman , and child now owes the Federal Gov. approx. $119,000 for their part. This still does not count local increases.
If you are a Democrat , or Republican, and are interested, leave your anonymous at home and be in person at that meeting. Remember there are strength in numbers. All ideas should be discussed because it affects all of us.
I normally only comment on national issues on this blog because having been a commission chairman I know how difficult it is to make the choices the commission is facing.
None the less, I have a few suggestions to put forward. Raising taxes, raising the millage rate is almost never the correct answer. Unless the five commissioners can look the citizens in the eye and convince us every dollar is currently well spent w/ no waste or fraud, then the commissioners should not ask for more. My last year on the commission a majority of the commission was absolutely sure raising taxes was the right thing. It wasn't and the public was correctly outraged.
Taxpayers have to decide what they want in this era of reduced income to the county coffers. The commission can reduce services or raise your taxes. Which do you want? I would encourage you to contact your two county commissioners and voice your opinion.
Second, I have heard that the county has carried forward a negative balance the last several years. I don't have a clue if this is true or not, but if it is true, frankly heads should roll. Counties are required by law to balance the budget each year and yes there are ways using smoke and mirrows to balance an unbalanced budget on paper. What may be legal is not always ethical.
I encourage our commissioners not to raise our taxes. Why do you think people are so upset and having TEA (taxed enough already) Parties. Please commissioners, be part of the solution, not part of the problem.
I agree with you guys. I hardly ever post on here either, but I too am having a hard time dealing with how often LC spends obscene amounts of money on things we can do without.
I really don't see why we had to have the new football field. It was a waste of money to me. Not to mention, in hard times, everybody knows you cut back on spending, not over-indulge on it. I just don't see where they're getting their money's worth anyway.
Do you ever wonder that? It's like, are they confused and just taking the HIGHEST bid for jobs? Of course, come to think of it, the contractor was probably friends with someone who handles the money and got the hook up. Just like when a school board member's company wins a bid to build a school. Or should I say, schools? That would probably be a conflict of interest or something. And we all know THAT doesn't happen does it?
FYI again and again- The tax payers and voters approved the SPLOST- the fairest tax- to build the stadium that you are complaining about. The SPLOST is NOT part of the regular budget It is an extra penny sales tax that EVERYONE who buys ANYTHING in this county pays!!!
According to what I have heard also, they are now an entire year behind which is why they are in the predictament they are in. Also, for the people of the public the school system has nothing to do with the Lamar County Commission taxes two separate issues. The school system and county have there own millage and then it becomes a combined as you look at your bill you will see how your funds go to the separate agencies.
I will look for "anonymous" on the next ballot and will vote because "anonymous" knows all about what is going on in the County. All you guys do on here is complain. No suggestions just all mouth!!
These are some good responses I have read.
Come on guys make your presence known and opinions herd.Just take a couple of hours and be of some input, MAN UP, AND SHOW UP. Between now and Tuesday do some research-jot down some good ideas and present them Tuesday night to the commissioners. From what I gathered at the meeting they are very open to ideas, so I think all of us should put on our best behavior and help. What do you say???
Dang, woman. When and where is this meeting you keep talking about? I haven't lived in Barnesville that long so be specific please. And I take my coffee with two sugars.
Some counties have high s.a.t. scores and lousy athletic teams. Some have low s.a.t. and great athletic teams. Lamar county has low s.a.t. and lousy teams. Whats wrong with this picture? I personally could care less if they never win another game if the s.a.t scores could go up big time. A better educated county could only benefit everyone. But i would be for trimming the school budget until they show a BIG improvement. Every year they always give the same old arguement that its for the children. Looks to me it only helps already overpayed school board personell. And im not refering to bus drivers, cafeteria people, maintance. Look at Trubys salary after you get your tax bill. See how that makes you feel.
Why dont you look at the s.a.t scores of those counties? We are dead last. What are they doing right that L.C. is not doing? The only thing L.C. comes in 1st is in teenage pregnancies.

Before you go blasting the school system maybe you should get out the old Websters and learn how to spell and write correctly. Oh, by the way, Dr. Truby, as he should be referred, does not take the SAT for the students. How can you hold him responsible for student's actions? Some children don't test well and others do not care. Much of this starts at the home and not the school.
The NYT - "Democratic leaders, including Mr. Obama, say they are intent on letting the tax cuts for the wealthy expire as scheduled at the end of this year. But they have pledged to continue the lower tax rates for individuals earning less than $200,000 and families earning less than $250,000 — what Democrats call the middle class.
Most Republicans want to extend the tax cuts for everyone, and some Democrats agree, saying it would be unwise to raise taxes on anyone while the economy remains weak. If no action is taken, taxes on income, dividends, capital gains and estates would all rise."
THEREFORE
In simple terms government is going to let the tax cuts run out and eberyone will get a tax increase; which is exactly what government really wants but wants the blame to fall elsewhere. Republicans will blame democrats, and democrats will blame republicans. The people are confused and both parties get more spending money and can point fingers at each other.
Where was everyone the last 3 years. Lamar county and the school board have increased spending every year and covered it up the revaluation. I warned everyone to complain about these increases. Only 5 people showed up to complain.
Now spending is at the HIGHER LEVEL (could have been controlled over the last 3 years)and revenue is decreasing because of the economy!!
If spending was at the same level as 3 years ago, no tax increase would be needed!!!
I try not to respond to this type of forum, but it seems necessary at a critical time like this. Let me say for the final record, and provable record I might add, that the Lamar county school board has decreased spending significantly every year for the last four years. Believe it or not, we even lowered Lamar's millage rate during this period. Now to the nitty gritty, if you will. We, as a board, have had state level cuts come our way like tornados through a trailer park. We have multiple issues to look at when this happens. First, it is possible to panic and start throwing millage rate language around. Though we look at this yearly, we also understand the economic situation surrounding all of the counties in this great state. Millage rate increases are always the last option. I am not interested in whether or not the uninformed believe this or not, it is simply the truth. We have the most incredible employees in the state. Each day teachers, administrators, custodians, nutrition workers, parapros, office personel, and many others take children of any race or economic background and do their very best to create a love for learning within them. It is almost impossible to do the miracles that occur each day in the classrooms of Lamar County schools. Every school must work efficiently to accomplish daily, weekly, even yearly goals. Thank you to all of the dedicated workers fighting the fight every day. Having said that, each year, we look at how we can survive this "economic earthquake," We look at reduction in salaries, benefits, furloughs, shorter school year, etc. No stone is left unturned. Each year, a dedicated central office staff bring us the results of hundreds of hours of hard work over the stove of missing state monies. You guys and gals are incredible. Thank you! We then take that and decide where we can cut without completely destroying the progress we've seen. There has been no year in which we did not cut our expenses in some degree and many times, painfully. Now we are faced with the assumption that we have tons of dollars to give to any entity we choose. We have a hard-working, intelligent, and solution seeking county commission. It is only normal for people to point fingers. I will not. The truth is that for every dollar we choose not to put toward our schools that the state, through equalization formulas, penalizes us the same or close to the same amount in state money. One dollar becomes two of loss immediately. We do not have tons of money that is not accounted for for use in our budget. We have labored over a five year plan. We want to look ahead to brighter days. We need to make it through to the other side, and we believe we have the plan to make it happen. We can't go on pretending to understand school finance and have discussions without facts. I am proud to be a part of this county, this school system, and this board. I will miss it terribly. Maybe if the critics could come through our clean schools to see incredible things happening, they would be a little more cautious about numbers they have never seen or dreams they have never had. Our school employees have a burden for children. Lamar's children do not come in neat little packages like lunchables. They come with snotty noses, abused bodies, unfriendly environments. Oh yes, there are the perfectly put together kids too. Wow! how do you do it Lamar schools? Bravo! I will fight for you!
LAMAR county's schools are filthy you should look at the high school the classrooms smell of dust and mold! that school is far from clean. these schools are sorrier than ever!!!
Mr. Christopher,
If you are on the school board, just how much money is the system sitting on?
If the system is doing a great job of teaching the snot nose children- then why is Georgia at the bottom of the scale? Last I know of the news media said we were 49th. If I am not mistaken that puts us about a low as a state can go---correct me if I am wrong.
I no longer have any children in the school system. Have not in a lot of years, but I pay more school tax than I ever have in my life----seems to me there is something wrong with that picture. I do not want to here everybody benefits, when I go to a fast food place, the computers are down and our future leaders can not figure my bill! Not only have I had to tell the person what my total was but it was comical to watch them figure the sales tax.
I heard it was $5 million and I don't call it budgeting correctly I call it taking too much of my tax money - same as stealing! And now the county is asking for more??????? Can you at least kiss me first.....
Ryan, thanks for sharing this and for serving on the school board. Your insight into Lamar County schools has been right on target and we will miss your input in helping educate our children.
I would encourage the city, county and school system to cut out the fluff. How much does it cost the government to support bbq and blues and buggy days? close the civic center, have the library open only 4 days.. Have buses pick kids up on the end of the street not door to door, garbage pick up every 10 days, fewer choices in the lunch room, moratoriums on water authority, fire services. If you are on welfare, live in public housing and get food stamps your apartment must not have cable tv and you are limited to one gov.paid baby...I would encourage everyone to suck it up for a year, take drastic measures, look around...what services did we have 30 years ago. If it is not necessay ie civic center, then we can do without it until things are better.

Better wake up Lamar, you are fast being left behind.
Dear firefighter: by the time you get to most houses the fire is beyond saving, other than vehicle fires and wrecks the rural area receives no benefit..and please learn to write a decent sentence.
dear abby, while some houses do indeed burn to a point beyond saving, you still have to try.our county has a very dedicated fire dept.why does almost everyone on this blog, when confronted with a real debate ,resort to mudslinging? you said "moratoriums on water authority, fire services",and I just asked what you meant.this doesn't mean that I am a firefighter.I am just asking you to explain you're point. If my sentence structure offends you I am sorry,as I have been out of school a long time and may have forgotten some things.

Then there is ESPLOST
Now Georgia wants to create TSPLOST
All SPLOST is abused. And we can and should hold our local government responsible - but everyone needs to be better informed.
