Part 2 of a series

The Herald-Gazette periodically looks into reports on salaries paid local officials and top managers. Here is a breakdown of annual salaries and travel expenses paid to local leadership, both elected and appointed.

It should be noted those asked at each entity have been fully cooperative in our efforts to research this material.

I care!!!Did you know that Commissioner Nancy Thrash has a computer that was given to her by Mr. Wayne Patterson and paid for by the county? That is not all; we are paying $45 a month for her to have internet service. Is that the way we want to spend our tax money? What else is going on that we need to know about? Who is looking out for us? Gretchen Ellerby was fired because she couldn’t produce the paper work to show her raise. I don’t know about you but I would like to see the paper work on Mr. Wayne Patterson’s raise from $75,000 to where it is now. If he can’t come up with his paper work he needs to go also! Let’s clean the house, and stop spending money that we don’t have!

I was told that System director of educational alternatives Treesomia Walker, ($76,300.16, travel $3,178.42) has never taught school but she evaluates other teachers.

They went to school to "take our hard earned money", not to mention that they are teaching our children. I have a few questions about some of the pay difference between some but I am sure that there is a reason. That's why they get paid the big bucks.

You try educating some of the students that are influenced by their parents. Bills cannot get paid by volunteering. Education is no longer valued in this country. Everyone thinks that they are owed something. Truth be told educators are not paid enough! Try volunteering your time or becoming a substitute and you will realize that it is not as easy as it seems! They get $200 a month. Whoopee! Would you serve for no compensation on a board that meets for several hours at a time, often multilple times each month and have to take off work early or sometimes not go to work at all to go to board functions?

You must be a BOE member padding your justification. You have 1 meeting a month and anything else you are compensated for. You have other meetings outside the realm of Lamar County to which you are paid travel. Not to mention the annual free vacation (so called working trip) which you can bring along your family all on tne taxpayer's dime. Plus the side benefits that aren't mentioned that suppose to make serving on the board even more worthwhile. Why don't you tell the people just what our side benefits are.

relatively speaking, when you compare it to other state jobs with similar requirements for education and way fewer perks it is-- they only work 3/4 of the year- now break it down per day vs. 40-50 hrs week, year round with masters degree for other occupations in state government- yes it is a lot

unfortunately, many people at Probation, Parole, DFCS, DJJ, Mental health, and the health dept. have masters levels and 15 years and only make in the 40's- including county directors

They are a heck of a lot better than what you would see when you head north to the south side of the metro Atlanta area. Lamar CO. schools have come a heck of a long way and I believe you are better off than you realize.

The state pays most of the salaries Lamar County suppliment is only around $2,000. Which is lower than many surrounding counties. Yes your state taxes go to help pay the state part of the salaries, but when you consider the way the state spends money the educational system is the least of your worries. The educational system is always the first on their chopping block.
Also, please consider how much the state pays into welfare for this county alone? Any chance they will be posting the names and amounts on those paychecks in the paper anytime soon? Funny how most of those people rent and don't pay school taxes!

You are kidding. He has an assistant to help him and 2 in the office. I don't see how you would compare this to education. There are sports groups at churches, schools , summer camps. I don't think Lamar county tax payers should have to pay for this. Follow the director around one day , and you will see what his job duties are.

Teacher and administrator base salaries are set by the state. Each county will add its own supplement to that amount. Wonder how much our LC supplement is?

If you were, you would know what teachers all around make and not point fingers at these. You're right, private schools aren't funded by tax dollars and tend to do better. However, private schools can be restrictive of who they enroll (no behavior problems, special needs, etc.) Also, the private schools do not have to take all the mandatory tests that public schools must administer (CRCT's, EOCT's, GHSGT's). Simply put, private schools can essentially play by their own rules. If they had to adhere to all the standards of public schools (including educating ALL students), they would not be as successful.

More money delivers a better product? Not in the public school system. The majority of our property tax goes to this disfunctional school system. It would be nice to have a choice to put our tax dollars into private or public for our children. A little competition never hurt nobody. And I think the same should go for public education. We should have a choice where we want our children educated and our tax dollars go to the school of our choice. Maybe then the public schools will wake up and the majority of the students will graduate knowing how to read and write.

As for the teacher's salaries....I really don't see the need to pay someone so much money to teach the same thing year after year after year. And most of them recycle their own tests and material anyway. And to make that much more money than law enforcement and fire fighters who risk their lives every day? It's crazy. And don't start hollering about all of their expensive education. I could teach kindergarten in the first grade.

This is out of line. These salaries shouldn't have been posted in the first place. This newspaper should be ashamed to out all this personal information. If this County wants to educate their children with underpaid teachers who aren't as qualified b/c of the low pay, then c-ya, my children deserve a great education and the only way to achieve that is to have great teachers who get paid for their hard work, time, dedication, and QUALIFICATIONS! Quality should outweigh Quantity!

Do a little more homework before you run off at the fingertips. Commissioner Thrash does not charge us taxpayers 480.00 a month for health care. I as a taxpayer would much rather pay 45.00 monthly than 480.00 a month. The laptop is the countys. As far as raises, check with the chairman (Matthews) He must likely is the one that approves everything before it happens. I for one wish the commissioners met as a whole to discuss these and vote on these raises. With what has happened lately, the county commission office and the employees is ran like a "run away freight train." There is no accountablity. I noticed in California they just arrested the former city manager, city commissioners , etc. for giving themselves a raise. They had an internal audit and found it. Guess what? They have all been arrested, "For misappropriation of public funds and other charges." We need an internal audit and Mrs. Ellerby needs to be arrested. I bet there is more to this than meets the eye and she knows. Chairman Matthews is wanting to handle it himself and allow her to pay so much a month. With her not going to jail , everything is swept under the rug. How do we know what back room deals are made everyday in this county. Lamar county tax payers wake up. And we definitely need someone from the outside doing the audit. I do not trust the people running the county.

I am not Comm. Thrash and I don't even live in her district. But I have done my homework and apparently you have not. You just have an axe to grind. I have been in the meetings the last few months and I must say she stands her ground even if she doesn't have the backing of the rest of the commissioners. She fights for what her district of taxpayers want. No increase in property tax. From what I understand she is not from here and that is a plus. She doesn't have to worry about taking care of local folks or doing favors for certain people in the county she grew up with. I do realize from going to the meetings there are certain people that make negative comments about her to put her down publicly , but it doesn't do anything but make them look bad. Once I found out who they are in the community , I understood why they were putting her down to put the focus on them. Its sad when you have to put someone down to bring attention of yourself. Do yourself a favor, get over it.

These folks make a lot more than I make, what about you?
I don't begrudge another person their salary, though. I made the choices and now I live them.
The private sector is not included in this series.

thats because you were paid by the taxpayers and we have no choice. the private sector is entirely a different story. you dont have to buy the paper or buy an ad from them. yo are retired now and still being paid by the tax payersa of this state and your county with your retirement check. so no you dont begrudge the teachers because you were one too, oh excuse me you probably refer to yourself as an educator, we need more teachers and less educators. we could solve all this and eliminate the public school system and take half the amount we spend on each child and send them to the private school of their choice. if we pay these peoples salary we do have a right to speak out and should. they don't get paid vacation. they get paid for working days most contracts are 190 for teachers and goes up the higher you are. so think about a principle on a 12 month contract as opposed to a teacher on a nine month contract.

What a dumb@$$ you are...teachers don't get paid vacation leave - the county spreads their check out over a 12 months time frame. If it happens to be a holiday - so be it....they get paid for working the 180 days, whether if it 180 consecutive days or 180 days spread throughout the year.

My husband and I are both educators. I am still paying for my education while he is in school and let me tell you, it takes $$$$ to get those degrees. If only they were free!! Our paychecks together is enough for us but as the kids get older.....
I did not go into education for the money!! I do it for the sweet children who need a quality education!!

Well we have had wonderful experiences at Lamar County Primary and Elementary Schools. We stay involved with the schools and their teachers. We show our face alot and communicate with the teachers frequently. That is what all parents should be doing.
In my opinion - educators aren't paid enough and no i am not an educator. They are responsible for educating our children (our most prized possessions) to help form and shape them into the successful adult we aspire them to be. What an irrelevant argument. Suggesting that a government employees rate of pay being public is the same as a juveniles school records is ridiculous.

Looks like most teachers are overpaid, considering their yearly salary rate when they don't even work all year. And then their teachers union goes and supports the ever so sincere and apologetic roy barnes after what he did to them before. How soon folks forget, but how quickly they get reminded

I dont mind paying teachers a comparable salary to other teachers nationwide. I think they should be adequately trained and supported by the school system and then they should be held accountable for their work just like anyone else. I dont believe ineffective teachers should be allowed to keep their jobs..period.

I think the salaries are stupid concerding the school system sucks... I know I took my kids out of the school system. NO ONE should make a 6 digit figure in a school that has had to make all kinds of cuts just to make it this school year. If they would cut their money and give it to what the students, schools and, teachers needed they would not have to make cuts and alot of people in this town would not have pulled their children out of the school system. They do nothing to help our children but let the ones that casue trouble keep the others from learning and not wanting to go..... Help the kids cut the salaries......

I agree that the wages of our teachers should not have been published but on the other hand, look what they have to put up with. Kids that want to cuss them, disrespect them, and disrupt class....It is not only up to the teachers but up to us parents to make sure that our kids behave in school and give the teachers the respect they need. I have not always agreed with what has gone in the school system but give them a break....they have to deal with idiots a lot of times.

Reading all this makes me SICK to my stomach. These high salaries have NO just cause when our schools FAIL the state standards in education. Our students as a whole are failing subjects, yet they want us to pick our own tutors (most outside of the county) for our children. Why not bring these tutors to our schools? Looks like the TEACHERS need the tutoring, along with the students. How outrageous is it that some people want to sit here and justify salaries that these educators make and say in the same breath they don't make enough?! ARE YOU SERIOUS??!! Salaries need to be cut, and the monies should go to tutors & students education needs instead of more taxes on the people of Lamar County.

No, teachers don't need tutoring. Teachers need parents that have a backbone to discipline their children at home and when they get in trouble at school. When I was in school if I got in trouble at school I also got a spanking when I got home. Teachers spend to much time discipling children who do not get it at home. Therefore EVERYONE suffers! If you stop and consider what the teachers have to deal with on a daily basis. They are now babysitters as well as disiplinarians and teachers. People want to complain that the school system doesn't teach it is because so many kids nowadays don't know how to act in public. They are told that they don't have to do what they are told they are told that they don't have to behave or be quiet. Some of them are not even taught that they are not allowed to use curse words in school or any where else.

How much does "Lamar County" actually pay the teachers in the system? I thought the majority of the money was from the state.
