I need to be working for the city. These folks are making some cheese for doing what they do. They have competative salaries with Henry and Clayton co but dont have the money coming in to back it up.
Did you know that Commissioner Nancy Thrash has a computer that was given to her by Mr. Wayne Patterson and paid for by the county? That is not all; we are paying $45 a month for her to have internet service. Is that the way we want to spend our tax money? What else is going on that we need to know about? Who is looking out for us? Gretchen Ellerby was fired because she couldn’t produce the paper work to show her raise. I don’t know about you but I would like to see the paper work on Mr.Wayne Patterson’s raise from $75,000 to where it is now. If he can’t come up with his paper work he needs to go also! Let’s clean the house, and stop spending money that we don’t have!
did u know that com. thrash is using a laptop that is the countys? Did u know she is not using the countys insurance that costs 480.00 a month? Did u know that Ms. Ellerby gave herself a raise w/o approval from Mr. Matthews? Did u know u can call Mr. Matthews and find the answers to ur questions, being he is the chairman? Maybe we can switch managers. Put Mr.Roberts in Mr. Patterson's place for 108,000.00 and Mr. Patterson in Mr. Roberts place for 78,000.00
What the travel money for? Are the mayor and council members suppose to ride around the city? When they go on trips out of the city they submit a expense voucher, isn't this correct? Are funds received for travel taxable? This may explain why money received for travel is more than their yearly salary.
What are the salaries of other employees? Let it be known as I have always said once a person is hired by the city and gets on the "sugar tit" , they never leave while they are still living unless forced out.
The City of Atlanta does not have a City Manager. They operate under the elected mayor. The City has a Chief Operating Officer, Peter T. Aman, who works directly for the Mayor and oversees the divisions. This is as close to a City Manager that you can get. His salary is $216,582.81. This is base salary only. I am sure that he is paid more. Given the circumstances, I would say that Barnesville's City manager should about half of what the salary currently is. I don't think the City Manager of Griffin makes much more than that.
Just wondering if Pike Co has the same issues as lamar. I looked on your pike county website I couldnt find anything on there about salaries within the county. Are they not in the financial trouble that we are in or do they not cooperate with you or what?
No wonder , we have a "hole in the wall" pound with no a/c , no mats for the animals to lay on, pens so small you can throw a hankerchief and you have wall to wall carpet. No wonder, the city can't afford someone to be in the pound from 9to5 , so people can visit. This is also the reason they do not have certified animal control officers to patrol and write up violations. All the money is being spent on these city officials. What a joke!
Wonder if the expenses the City Manager has, include getting hamburgers for his friends? Jason Shirey was the one that had the problems with them Dog Pound, he was making less then, as I understand it. The Dog Pound is no better.
Okay, I will try this again. The first time I asked this question, it was not posted.
Can anyone tell me how many Mathews' are involved in local government here...either the elected or those emoployed by the county, city etc.
I'm curious as to the degree of nepotism, if any at all, exists .
Ron, The Matthew's clan has been in guvment for as long as I can remember around here. You know how it goes...
Civic center? The place on Forsyth Hwy? Why isnt that under Parks and Rec.? Why is the senior center not under parks and rec? What about the pool? There is a lot of "directors/managers" with NO-ONE to direct!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, all I can find is Jimmy Mathews in Aldora and Jay...any other search is outdated.
I've heard things about the water dept. oh...excuse me the water authority.
I would love to have some names....sounds like it's time to retire some folks and get them back to the private sector.
Ive heard the same things about the Water Auth. Makes me wonder about Randy as well. The board of Education has a couple of the same names as well in various positions.
Even with a college degree, a Barnesville City Manager should not make over 85,000. We have one with no degree... Doesnt say much about the mayor and council who approve his stuff.
78,000.00 looks like p-nuts when you compare it to the city. A whooping 108,000. 00 for the city manager. city- less people , pays out more money. County- more people , pays out less money. Does the city manager get insurance, retirement plan, etc.? How can you find out the whole package for that position? How much vacation time and sick leave does he get? What is the deductible on the insurance? All of that combined you are probably looking at 130,000.00 a year.
Yeah kinda like when Mr. Roberts put a guy out to do some painting on the city baracades and pretty much left him on his own... He was told to paint 2 baracades..one at the end of Greenwood Street and one at the end of Mitchelle Drive.. He was to walk I suppose as he was left unattended and on foot. When he got done painting the one at the end of Greenwood St.. He looked around for the other barracade in sight and I am assuming the only thing he saw in the area that was wooden was my parents privacy fence.. He started painting it..... luckily he was picked up for a lunch break and only got 3 or 4 boards painted. My mom came home to find 3 or 4 boards painted and a paint can and brush by the fence..She was smart enough to call the city and ask Mr. Roberts if he had someone out painting and informed him that her fence was NOT THE BARRACDE! If he had not taken a lunch break he probably would have painted the whole fence..He was well instructed!!! Thanks god for lunch breaks!!!lol
the city of barnesville is solid and that is how they operate. if the city was in dire straits like the county then you would have a dog in this salary fight,... but you don't have a dog in this fight so get over it....
Simply disgusting. $108k? Seriously? We, the hard working taxpayers of Lamar County need to over-throw the whole lot of them and start over.
Ron, Sheila, Not Sheila, anyone else who cares, find out for us how we can overthrow our local gov't and re-elect/re-appoint/re-hire for these positions. There's got to be a way.
HAG,
I'm not sure if overthrow is the correct term. It implies a coup.
We certainly could recall if there were sufficient grounds to do so. I think the best we can hope for is elect them out of office at the next election.
I have been looking on line for many things about Lamar County, yet not much can be found.
Oh, you can see people's pictures, all dressed nicely, posing with little to no information about anyone. I tried to find information on the water authority, who actually is the water authority, and could find nothing other than there was one.
If it is true, that one family or friends of this family have been running things around here for years and years, I suppose it's time to make some changes. What we have is not working.
I would love to see the county's charter and review it and will be searching for that today so I may have a better understanding as to how things should be run. It just might be the charter needs to be reviewed and changed. One of the changes I would like to see is a nepotism clause, such as, "If you are an elected official or in County management in whatever capacity, you cannot have a relative working in the county. I'm not saying related folks shouldn't be among the elected, but certainly we can at least stop favoritism with job placement. There are other changes I would like to see, but again, I would want to see the charter.
I was excited to see there is a Tea Party movement here but am nervous about this. The modern Tea Party movement actually started with Ron Paul supporters around 1999. Of course, Fox News and the rest of the alphabet "news" stations, did their best to demonize Mr. Paul. Glen Beck even said Ron Paul supporters should be jailed because they might be terroist. Hannity basically said the same thing. After participating and, in polls winning several debates, he was uninvited to participate in any more.
Now, the Tea Party has been co-opted by the same folks who demonized it from the beginning. Rush, Beck, Hannity, O'Reilly...the list goes on, now praise the Tea Party for being such patriots.
Of course their message implies that everthing would be fine if we would just elect another Republican.....how many times are we going to go back and forth like this? If you liked Bush, you should love Obama...increased wars that benefit no one but large corporations, increased government and more liberties being taken away. Obama is Bush on steriods.
I truly doubt that anything will be repealed if a republican is elected, just as nothing was repealed when Bush took office, just as nothing was repealed when Clinton took over.
My concern is, the local Tea Party will be co-opted by the same powers to be that are now in office. At some point, we will just have to say NO....
I agree with you Ron, when Bush was in office the republicans had a chance to make fair tax an issue. But they didn't! Now they are using it just to get back in office. I'm voting Libertarian. The platform makes sense.
As for the local scene. I'll write in my vote for Chairman if someone will step up.
I haven't been listening to Hannity and Herman Cain very long (Cain makes the most sense of any of the news talk guys) but neither of them are supporting 'just electing another Republican.' Both are pushing for the real conservative in the races, as many of the so called Republicans are Republicans in name only (RINO's) and are as liberal or more liberal than the Democrats
What those two....Hannity/Cain...in fact all of them say is nothing but blowhard hogwash. Hannity is such a RINO he makes me want to puke. He worships Gingrich. Gingrich is one of the biggest Globalists, RINO's out there. Hannity can't get on his knees fast enough to service him.
What we are hearing and seeing on t.v. and radio is bull my friend.
The new contract for America? Pahhhhleeese. There we saw...a bunch of RINO's, notice they didn't have their jackets and ties on...so they could show you they are "regular" people?
Where in the contract is repealing the Patriot Act? Where in the contract is abolishing the Federal Reserve and having Congress control currency as stated in the Constitution? Where is at least re-instating Glass-Steagle?
Where is ending these needless wars benifitting only large corporations?
I hear Democrat...I run. I hear republican...I run. I hear Hannity say "conservative" I puke.
The people you see on t.v., hear on the radio are about as conservative as a drunk sailor in a strip club.
They are there to put on a show...like pro wrestling.
It would be interesting to see how many people are employed because they are relatives or friends of county and city officials. It will be interesting to see who gets hired to replace Mrs. Ellerby. Is it going to be a friend of a county official or a relative?
If the county and the city are in that much trouble. Combine the city and county government and eliminate have the postions. At making over 108 thousand I think he could run the city and county!
COMBINE.COMBINE. Then Combine some more. This goes DOUBLE for the county. Fire the people who are responsible for bringing jobs to this county. They are NOT doing their job. I worked all my life and thank the LORD i do not have to look for a job but so many of my friends who were good workers now are begging for any kind of job. Unacceptable.
If the county is in such dire straits for money, why not do what many employers have had to do: cut salaries. I personally had to take a pay cut. I didn't like it but hey its better than being without a job. These people make a heck of a lot more than I do. Plus some of them use city/county vehicles and live outside of the county(not law enforcement). Do they pay for their fuel, pay for wear and tear on the vehicle?
City Of Barnesville profile taken from ga.gov website.
Incorporated: February 20, 1854
Population: 5,972
Total Area: 5.67 square miles
Estimated median household income in 2008: $35,348
Many questions need to be asked and answered for public consumption.
How many businesses are open and pay taxes and fees in Barnesville? How many have gone out of business in the past 2 years?
Anyone know the answers? Anyone care?
Is Barnesville 'top heavy' with too many departments and too many employees and managers slopping at the public trough?
Could some departments and their activites be consolidated?
Was Barnesville in dire need of a city manager when Roberts was contracted? Did he have a "leg up" in the hiring process?
With a city population of less than 6,000 residents and Barnesville boundaries encompassing an area less than 6 sq. miles, what does
Kenny Roberts bring to the table in order to justify such a huge salary with expenses and benefits? Is his salary disproportionate to Barnesville's size and tax base?
I don't know him or his city government background, but, my family has lived in cities with populations exceeding 100,000 with an abundance of thriving businesses. Those cities have much larger city limits than Barnesville. The city managers in those cities had appropriate degrees with background experience and were paid far less than Mr. Roberts.
Barnesville's size and lack of business revenue does not warrant big bloated government fiefdoms. Too many fiefs and too many serfs.
As a new resident and property owner in this area, the listed names are not familiar to me. I neither like nor dislike any of them. I simply don't know who they are. As a successful retired businessman, I always did and still do keep my eye on the "bottom line".
There is much potential for Barnesville in the future when political changes are made to stop "business as usual." I registered to vote.
Will someone from the city hierarchy respond with plausible answers to the questions? Does the public need to know why so many employees are employed by such a small town? Do citizens need to know anything?
Defend your themselves! Give answers! Protect your positions!
I agree there need to be many questions answered. I consider myself a pretty good researcher, but other than basic information about the county and its "officials" I cannot find any information.
In the last election, there was little information given to the candidates who ran here locally. I suppose if you didn't know the candidate, you were doomed to vote like lots bet on horses...you like the name.
I cannot find any reports on the state of the county. Does not the county commissioner ever write a report and at least submit it to the newspaper to let folks know what is going on?
If some of the answers to my questions were answered truthfully, it is looking more and more like this county is run by an "elite" group of family and friends who don't seem to think they have a need to report anything to anyone.
Here's a hint for those "elite." You were not elected to be the masters of us. You were elected to serve. It's time to put your servants hat on.
There is a Tea Party meeting next Monday, the 4th at 6pm at the library. Perhaps we can get some answers to some of these questions then.
So, if I am to understand this correctly, the same group of family and friends, run the county, control the tax money, started the water "authority" and basically do what they want, rarely having to answer to anyone because that's the way it is.
They control the money, the land and the water. Wow!!! For some folks, capitilism works real well.
True. But I believe the fault is with those people who abuse power and not capitalism. Those groups of people would abuse power no matter what form of guvment we have. We have probably the best form of Government. We just need a better system of checks and balances. Somewhere along the way the lines between our branches of guvment have been erased. The Legislative,Executive and Judicial branches were originally meant to keep each other in "check". But now they are pretty much the same group with their own agenda without regard to the will of the PEOPLE.
The Czar program works for the Messiah in the White House, so that intelligent and opinionated Sheila should be hired as Czar Of Barnesville Operations. That has a ring to it! Saves big bucks!
ALL of the department divisons would be eliminated and ALL the managers would be able to start their unemployed status immediately upon Sheila's arrival as Czar. Saves a ton of money!
Sheila could bring along some assistants like: Sheela Tolley, NOT Sheila Tolley, Really Not Sheila Tolley, Wanna B Sheila Tolley, Thelia Solley, The Shelia Tolley and The Real Sheila Tolley and Just Sheila Tolley under her one large hat with no additional cost to the city.
No nepotism there! Saves money!
Sheila could hire Rhoda for combined Fire and Police Chief with elcie as a roving trouble shooter using her own vehicle. Saves money!
Thousands would flock to Barnesville just to rub shoulders with Lady Sheila and spend tons of money in the process. Makes money!
Hire Sheila, Fire the rest!
$108k and you have ALL the decision making power. No mayor and council needed here. Just more puppet strings. The sad part is that this will never change in mayberry....
What does filth have to do with salaries? Milner, Thomaston, Jackson, etc can't be compared to Atlanta. Does anyone know what the city manager in Jackson or Thomaston makes? Just wondering.
The city of Barnesville is beautiful and you can thank Mr. Roberts for that! He has done a great job over the years to beautify our town. We should be thankful that we have a city manager that has vision!
It takes 108,000. a year to beautify a small town. I think you need to count city employees for doing that job. The ones that never get thanked. I am sure you could have found someone out there , that would have done the same job or better for Barnesville at a lower pay. Of course, this is a good ole boys town. You have to take that into consideration, when you look at the salaries and the people that make them.
You don't get it. It is not the physical work that was done it is the leadership and vision that he had to get grants, etc. Barnesville taxpayers didn't pay for restoration of our beautiful town. Mr. Roberts made that happen with his ability to get grant dollars.
I do get it. He is overpaid for his postion. In fact, I think he should have done more, with the money he is getting and how long he has been city manager. What restoration are you referring to? And how much did it save Barnesville? Do you have that info? What grants was he responsible for? What years did this take place?
Even though I don't live in the city, I remain shocked about Mr. Roberts' salary since it was first published in the paper a few years ago. Once the tax assessments and/or millage rates in the city go up there will be an outcry similar to what happened in the county this year. Even though he seems to be doing a good job, that salary is extremely high for someone with his education and a town the size of Barnesville.
I'm more appalled at the salary of the Executive Director of the IDA. What justifies that salary? Certainly not results!
I agree on the salary for the IDA. I think that should be base salary with commission. The salary is out of proportion with the commercial business being brought in this county. Make her work for her salary. No companies setting up here, no salary for her. As long as the 80,000.00 is coming in whether or not she is bringing in new business, why should she care. Sounds like another back room deal with the door closed.
Breaking news. New taxes. Lamar County Commissioners said Cutting the Sheriffs and Public workers "Sheriffs cut and Public workers cut". New teacher and School budget cuts.
First, The Lamar County Water Authority has nothing to do with the City of Barnesville, the Matthews family, nor the Georgia Rural Water Authority.
Several years ago, against experienced and intelligent thought, SPLOST monies were used to birth the Lamar County Water Authority.
Secondly, the Matthews family has been in this community for a long time. Why wouldn't they be involved in local governments? Even so, Jay Matthews was elected by a majority of county voters and Randy Matthews has worked for many years in public works with no need for family ties to keep his job.
Regarding the salaries, praise the Lord that we live in a society in which we can gripe and complain about what our govermnent officials do and earn. With our vote we can even control what our government officials do and earn. With that said, city employees make exactly what the elected officials say they can make, as they approve a budget annually. As for Mr. Roberts, the mayor and council(a minimum of 20 different people over the last forty years)have approved his salary along with all other city employees. For seventeen years, Mr. Roberts has been accused of being a harsh ruler with no regard for the city or its employees. For many years, council members have run on the platform of "I will not be a servant to Kenny Roberts" and one by one, they all have recognized shortly after being elected, that he is indeed an efficient and effective manager whose greatest concern is the well-being of the citizens of Barnesville. There will no doubt be more council members who will follow this path.
Regarding experience/salary ratio. Hired in 1970 in the electrical department, Mr. Roberts worked his way over 20 years into the position of Electrical Superintendent and then Public Works Administrator. He worked for city manager, Ralph Barron for the first 18 years and then a short stint under Joanne Cannafax until he was hired as city manager in 1993. 40 years of experience covering all aspects of city business is certainly enough experience to warrant the salary.
Regarding vacation, leave time, and sick time, it would surprise most to know that he has given up more vacation, personal or sick time than he has taken.
Regarding a college degree... In a day where the HOPE scholarship has muddied the waters of the need of a degree, it is easy to understand the misguided thought that a degree is necessary to be successful in the modern corporate world. Work experience, training and self motivated education on the job is vastly more important than a piece of paper that suggests that the recipient has garnered wisdom in the last four years.
Regarding the successful management of the City of Barnesville, it is important to see the annual budget, pay attention to monthly council meetings, and generally look around as you move through the town you have chosen to make your home. The evidence is clear as to the effective management of the city.
well said & very true. KDR is the biggest asset the city has.Kenny works hard to stay on top of things and i cant remember anything getting by him that would do harm to our town or any of its employees. i would put our employee's up against any city of similar size any time
It all sounds good and sweet., but bottom line, we are talking taxpayers money. You are working for a private company not the government. I don't think he is worth 108,000. a year in a "small" town. If he was getting paid half that , I am sure he would not be around. It shouldn't have to do about the money but the dedication. Little towns are all about good ole boy politics. Barnesville is a prime example. Mr. Roberts knows he is sitting pretty. Surrounded by yes people and he is in control. What more could you ask for?
Amen! People are jealous for those that work hard all of their life and do a good job! I don't work for the city or county but I have done the same for a corp. It is called strive for success and work hard to get ahead.
Jealous?
I don't think so.
My question is not how hard they work..there is no doubt they work hard....my question is who do they work for?
They are supposed to work for the people of the county. Yet the evidence shows they are working for their own benefit. Show me I am worng and I will apologize
mr. kenny robert's salary and others salary is a bargain for everyone. kenny is hands on worker too.the rest of theses people dont make much. think about giving them a raise.
i lived in watsonville, ca for 20 yeras and lost my job in produce. i now work here in landscaping with a relative. yes, i am a citizen.i earn a little less here but the cost of living is much better. and it evens out. watsonville, ca has about 51,000 people.
i read my hometown paper online http://www.register-pajaronian.com/ and it lists salaries fo everybody. i now know why that city is about broke too. the city mamager office alone costs $591,626.52 and is overload with lazyness.

They control the money, the land and the water. Wow!!! For some folks, capitilism works real well.

Barnesville would not exist at the level it does if not for Atlanta.
Rural Georgia get in the 21st century
I'm more appalled at the salary of the Executive Director of the IDA. What justifies that salary? Certainly not results!
barnesville is not handicapp friendly none of the sidewalks and ramps are doable down right scarey some places ypu can/t even get a wheelchair thru
I don't think so.
My question is not how hard they work..there is no doubt they work hard....my question is who do they work for?
They are supposed to work for the people of the county. Yet the evidence shows they are working for their own benefit. Show me I am worng and I will apologize
