BPD officer Freddie Crummie was struck by a vehicle driven by a female Gordon College student while directing traffic downtown following the LCCHS homecoming parade Thursday afternoon.

Too bad young lady. You hit a police officer. Milam may really need to process a case now. You could have shot his police dog, moved it and buried it....and walked. BUT now the DA will have to read up on one of those DA for Dummies books to refresh his memory on the judicial process.
I seriously hope Officer Crummie is fine. Police officers, deputies and the Military are the most underpaid people in the United States for the risks they take.
If she wasnt drinking why did they say they got her for DUI.Freddie is a very nice guy.Yall need to keep yout mouth shut about good people.I have known him for over 30 years and he has never did anything to hurt anyone.
That's the sad part....both of these folks seem to be good people who were involved in an accident. No malicious intent on anyone's part. Testing for DUI is standard protocol for this type of incident and stories are written to create the most hype. You are so right that folks need to hush and stop trying to trash either party. I do, however, believe headlines should be accurate. A more accurate headline would have been BPD officer injured in accident. The driver of he vehicle is my niece and is truly a kind, loving young lady who is very distraught over the fact that she injured anyone. She doesn't smoke, drink or do drugs. One of the sweetest girls you will ever meet.
as a former law enforcement officer i really wish i knew who you were. put your name on here so we all know who the idiots of the town are....he should have gotten out of her way are you kidding me ...idiots idiots idiots
If you are referring to MY COUSIN being an idiot, I think you need to know WHO you are talking about before you go calling names. She is a good christian girl. Accidents happen! Apparently neither of them were paying attention because she had come to a complete stop and then proceeded to turn and was maybe going a couple of mph. Not like she ran him over at 60mph. We are only human! Humans make mistakes! The only perfect being is GOD!
Being an 11 year veteran, I have been fortunate enough to never have been struck by a vehicle. BUT there have been several close calls of being hit. We cannot point fingers at the person who hit the officer without knowing all of the details. An IDIOT would be a person that calls people names and jumps the gun without knowing ALL of the details. By no means am I taking up for the person for hitting the officer because if she is in the wrong she is in the wrong but at times, Officers do not pay full attention. I know the person personally. She is a very sweet, caring, kind, God-fearing Christian, who would never in a million years hurt ANYONE intentionally. Accidents do happen and this is all it was was and unfortunate accident for the Officer as well as the person who hit him.
I agree to comment #19, that comment, #13, should be removed. Officer Crummie is going to have to have surgery on his arm and may have to see a plastic surgeon about his facial injury. How fast was the student going ? Officers are there to help us!!! Don't post ugly comments, think about his family, my prayers are with his wife, sons, and grandchildren!!!
Crummie, I'm sorry to hear about what happened to you! I hope that you will have a speedy recovery. The community will miss you greatly until you come back to work. May God touch and bless you.
we are praying for you Freddie. The young lady as well. She was terribly upset as she should be. She was not on drugs or alcohol. it was just a terribly accident that occurred at the end of the Home Coming Parade.
Thank goodness...another sane person who actually cares about both persons involved. There are definitely wild kids out there, however, this is not one of them.
Honestly, do we need headlines that bad? BPD run down.....really? Being tested for DUI...this is standard protocol for this type of incident. A waste of time in this instance as this young lady neither drinks nor does drugs. It was a simple accident. There are kids running wild and nothing is ever done, however, this young lady is not one of them. She graduated as Valedictorian of her class, has already earned an Associates Degree and is now diligently working on her nursing degree. She also has been on the Dean's List each grading period. Maybe instead of making assumptions, think of how many times you made a mistake and just got lucky. I don't think any of us have walked on water recently. I also wish the officer well, but it was an accident in which a driver pulled from stop sign in an area she was unfamiliar with due to traffic being re-routed. If the proper lights had been used on the officer's car, this certainly would have helped prevent the accident. Nobody was "run-down".
Georgia Code 40-5-55 states that you will be tested for DUI if you are involved in an accident that causes serious injuries or fatalities. A broken bone is considered a serious injury for this code section.
And all that does not maker her right. she was not paying attention just like the rest of the teenagers, up on college drive an officer was directing traffic and she could not proceed on college drive and had to turn on stafford. validictorian or not she stil need to obey the traffic laws. Thats whats wrong with young people today they make good in school and think they should get a free pass. freddie was not the only officer hit a female deputy foot was run over. so i believe people think they can drive how they want to.
no one is saying she was right or wrong. simply that it was an accident. by judging her she def doesnt think good grades get a free pass just that she did not see the officer. she was turning onto market or taylor. the fact that another officer's foot was run over does not mean that all college students or teenagers in the area cannot drive
correction on this last comment i made on #26 i said she was turning onto market or taylor i meant she was coming from that direction and was turning left onto main/thomaston st. i can see her problem coming from that way. i'm surprised that other officers or anyone for that matter has not been hit at this intersection while directing traffic or driving. it's terrible and in the afternoons and evenings its even worse. you cant see because of vehiles in the way and the sun in so bright alot of the time making it that much more difficult to see. this could have happended to any of us. dont judge the young lady.
He was stationary directing traffic correct. She was in a vehicle. She was at fault period unless he ran out in front of her. Im not doubting that she is a nice girl. Accidents happen to the best of us. She had to be going faster than a slow roll to do the damage to him that was done. They need to request her cell phone records to see if she had recieved or sent text messages at the time of the accident or if she was on the phone. Being on the road as a career, I can assure you that women drivers are the worst ones out there. They are busy doing all other things and hardly pay attention to what is going on around them.
I hope this young lady dont let this cause her to miss sleep or it doesnt freak her out too bad. She does need to learn from it though and pay very close attention when she drives. These vehicles that we drive are very very dangerous if the driver is negligent.
No the fault is the both of them - the officer for not being in a well lit area and her for not paying attention. My fiance is an officer and he faces danger every day that he leaves for work. BUT as an officer he should be paying attention for his own safety's sake. And as far as women drivers go... men drive just as bad or worse. The sex of the driver has NOTHING to do with what happened! I think if people would mind their own business instead of worrying about things that dont concern them this world would be a MUCH better place for us all!!!!
ummm excuse me the sun was setting over a building and the officer was standing in the shade. most people can understand the fact that the bright light can make it difficult to see. that is why it's an accident and not an intentional thing.
the sun was shining brightly over that building in front. the officer was standing in the shade. you can honestly tell me that you haven't found it hard to see in those type of conditions? i have heard others say that it's difficult to see in the shade with the sun in your face until you also get into the shade yourself. regardless it would still be an accident.
So it's his fault that the sun was setting? Really? come on....I don't doubt that she may be a nice girl, but the fault is hers.. Who doesn't see a person standing in the middle of busy intersection with all the parade traffic? Don't make excuses for a mistake. It was an accident but it was hers..don't get it twisted. That's what is wrong with people today. No one wants to take responsibility when they have an accident. Just apologize and move on. I'm assuming she isn't missing any school over this. Well, he won't be returning to work for awhile. Let's keep that in mind. And for the record, I do feel terrible for both involved.
no silly it's not his fault the sun was setting duh. however, that does make it not entirly her fault. i believe the officer might not have been paying attention either. the parade was over so there was no parade. the area was just still congested. also it was like the time some people get off work. i can def see how the accident happened. and if someone has to say one more time about the sun and that intersection being the reason she didn't see him i'm going to scream. there are several things that can factor into an accident. i mean she shouldn't be charged with everythiing in the book beacuase of this. dont get it "twisted" yourself. why can't anyone ever think that an accident can be no one's fault? and that wasn't meant to be mean to the officer or anyone else. i'm sure the poor girl HAS already apologized! wouldn't anyone have said that like a million times by now? but with no one willing to listen to her who knows. i feel so sorry for her. i feel terrible for the officer too but he has support from many people. everyone is just crucifying her though. how mean and thoughtless
I was not being mean..just realistic. You originally did say it was his fault because he was not in a well lit area. That is what I consider ridiculous. However, I also said I feel terrible for both involved. I agree too that many people are crucifying her for an accident and that is wrong. However, the fault is still hers. She doesn't have to be crucified to be at fault. However, the officer sustained more injuries than a "broken arm." He most likely will not be returning to work for quite awhile. How is any of what I said mean?
i did not say that it was his fault originally. that was the person at the top. i was simply commenting on your commment to their comment.
How do you know what injuries he received? Are you related to the officer?
I want to personally thank all who are concerned about my brother Freddy. Even though there is little that I have learned of the incident, I can assure you all that Freddy will recover from this. Like Walter posted earlier, there are privacy issues here with regards to medical information. I too am praying not only for my brother, but the young lady that was involved in the incident. To all of the other rude people who are who are making dumb@#$! remarks, your day is coming when you will have to deal with a really bad situation and Karma will prevail!
I pray that your brother has a speedy recovery. So sorry this has happened! I appreciate what the law enforcement officers do and people do not realize the dangers they face on a day-to-day basis. I also appreciate you not bad mouthing my cousin like the others on here. I give God the glory for him not getting hurt any worse than he was. God Bless you and your family!
Sir, I don't know you, but I certainly commend you for your maturity in this matter. My family certainly wishes your brother a speedy recovery. I find it very commendable that you too are praying for both parties. Indeed the driver of vehicle has been extremely distraught since accident. Now for the gentleman referring to women drivers, I urge you to contact insurance commission to clear up your distorted driver statistics.
she should be upset ..she ran over a cop in broad daylight. hopefully the law will prevail..she should be charged with failure to yield and assault with a motor vehicle just like anyone else would if it happened to them..
as i see it has been mentioned before, this was an accident. she did not do this intentionally. the sun was bright and she simply did not see the officer. the law will do what they must because it's the law but how cruel of you to pass judgement and will ill towards her! what if this would've happened to you and people were saying things like that to you? no need to be heartless. i'm sure she has enough to deal with with all of this going on
Think about this.
How best to get you the reader to take the time to read the article and think about it?
Use a catchy headline. That's all this is.
It's the way a good author will hook you on page 1 and bring you into his novel. Simple.
So now we know. This was an accident. The driver is probably upset all ways from Sunday, the officer will have a long but hopefully successful recovery, and life in Barnesville will move along.
Looky here! No name calling, no finger pointing.
Hope the officer's broken arm heals and the driver recovers from the emotional trauma. As for how the accident happened, any driver or pedestrian knows they're in danger every time they're in the area of that terrible intersection. Coupled with homecoming hype, it's no surprise it happened. It's past time the driving and parking challenges of downtown Barnesville are addressed.
i agree with this comment. something needs to be done about traffic in downtown barnesville. that intersection is VERY dangerous. why doesn't it have a light????? i heard that another officer or pedestrian was struck during this parade. where is their story? surely something is wrong somewhere if 2 people are hit near the same area in the same day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! also to address a previous comment i'm sure the girl was at a slow roll if she was TURNING which she WAS at that intersection!
A Lamar Deputy's foot was ran over after a person went through a barricade. In the end it's just people that can't drive or don't pay attention to the officers that are trying to do their job.
I had heard that he was also directing traffic and that he had motioned the car through. I
m not saying that I am absolutley postive about that but.....I'm just saying. I think maybe everyone is not paying full attention like most people on the road perhaps even the officers but who truly knows
49its bad when the police throw themselves on a citizens vehicle and put their legs and feet around the tire of the vehicle to stop the vehicle. you would think with the training that they go through that they would know better. Then they try to blame the driver. I don't know about some of these deputies. I think they have lost it. This deputy was out of control and lost it . The deputy was hollering out to other citizens like she was crazy. This driver was trying to avoid the jammed up traffic around Summers Field. Maybe in the future the police should have a better game plan. All the steets around the field were barricaded off leaving people with no way to get out.Sometimes being helpful instead of trying to show authority would be a great deal better.
o my goodness did the female officer's who's foot was run over do that? i mean i'm sure she did not put her foot out on purpose but she screamed and went ballistic on the driver? that's crazy. i'm sure officer crummie didn't did not do anything intentionally either but perhaps the police department does need a better game plan if an event is held in the downtown area again
I'm sure the police would love a better game plan. They would also love to have enough help. Complain to the city manager or Mayor. I get sick and tired of listening to people bitch about the police. They have a very difficult, thankless and low paying job. They obviously do it because they like helping people. Why do they never hear a simple thank you? Why would some of you make fun of and blame him for this accident? You people need to grow up and at least realize what these men and women do for us on a daily basis. Most of the deeds will never make the headlines and I can only imagine what they have to deal with. All of you haters should go ride with an officer or deputy for a few days or if you think you can do better, then apply.
you can have a better game plan with a small task force you just have to do what the words suggest and PLAN. law enforcement officers know what they are getting into when they join just like everyone else does when they choose a career. no one knows why they join. some of them don't even like people. so to say that they all join because they obviously enjoy helping people is a misjudgment. also i would like to work where you work because no one gets thanked constantly for what they do, in most cases that is.
Ok so an officer is trying to direct traffic and a driver is not paying attention or listening to what the officer is saying and then the officers foot is then run over....The officer should then use his or her authority to address the idiot driver. I would scram too. People in this town are so stupid. You dont just run thru a barricade. It is there for a reason. Sounds like this person was in to big of a hurry and was not paying attention.
you obviously don't have the facts . some police officers don't make good judgement calls . As the job, no one said that it was a easy job but they also make mistakes. All of us do. When you make the decision to make this a career you should know the dangers and the salary involved. They chose this.
I am sure they all know what they are getting into and yes it is their choice. My point is that jerks like you only try to voice negative opinions. They have to make split second decisions...how good at that would you be? Thnk you would be right all of the time? Now, back to the idiot that ran ove the female deputies foot.....I heard that she got out of her car and moved a barricade after she was repeatedly told she could not go that way because it was in the direction of the parade route. She obviously needed to be arrested. Point is when you are dealing with stupid people, a more aggressive tone may be required.
what? the person who ran over the officers foot moved the barricade to get through?!? that's crazy. why is that story not in the paper? how is that not news worthy?
I thought the parking and driving issues where addressed when downtown was revitalized? Seems all they did was making it worse! Ever tried to go through downtown when 2 big pickups are parked opposite of each other?
regardless of how it happened there is a dire need to fix that intersection... if you are trying to turn left onto main/thomaston street it's impossible to see either way and people fly through there like it's nothing... then you get the ones that are coming off market st turning right on main or trying to go straight and sit in the middle of the intersection blocking every way and i have even seen them pull out in front of others with out looking... market needs to be a one way going back to greenwood that might solve a little of the problems
i have also noticed how dangerous that intersection is and what people are doing in order to get through it. i'm sure the young lady didn't mean too. i believe it's not entirely her fault. the city of barnesville should have a light there or something. i'm sure this isn't the first incident that has occured at this particular intersection.
I am sorry to hear about this accident. Forget who's "fault" it was!! Lets try to address the real problem at hand. We need to take care of the danger at this intersection. Numerous people, including college students, come through that intersection. It sounds like it would benefit the county to put up a light. Yes, there will still be accidents (running red-lights etc.) but, it seems like the number of accidents would decrease.
really? i thought only like major highways and such was their responsibility. hmmmm o well the city or county should have made several requests to the DOT by now then and something shouldve happened by now
It is my understanding, and I might be wrong about this, but in order to have a traffic light installed, three people must have lost their life at the intersection. please correct me if I am wrong on this.
