It is so sad to see that Barnesville Georgia is becoming so unsafe. I know that the law enforcement are doing what they can. I moved to Georgia about 12 years ago and really loved Barnesville and felt safe.Back then not only law enforcement but the community looked out for one another and everyone seemed to care about what happened to Barnesville and their Neighbors. Now it seems like a cold town and no-one really cares anymore. It is time that all the good people of Barnesville stand up and be heard to get their town back and make it a safe place for the children. If no-one does nothing the future does not look good for such a beautiful place. Please stop the violence and get the drugs out of Barnesville!!

They can distinguish between corporations and whatever a “corperations” is. They know that the United States flag is often referred to as the stars and stripes; not the stars and “strips”. Actually I assume you meant to say then. Therefore, do you really believe conservatives work behind closed doors to undermine the middle class? After the demonstrations by our majority democratic progressive liberal leadership led by Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid to quadruple the deficient, force an unwanted health care system down America’s throat, all while working behind closed and guarded doors; then you accusing the conservatives of undermining the middle class is ludicrous.
Fact: There would not be a middle class without conservatives. They believe in allowing a person to keep what they are willing to go out and earn with as little governmental interference as possible. Too many progressive liberals believe that those that are willing and able to get ahead in life should be forced to share their life’s accomplishments with them.
A tiny lesson: Tax breaks allow those rich and powerful middleclass under minders that you reference to create jobs. Those jobs allow people to work. When people are working they are paying their share of the tax base rather than creating a burden by extracting benefits while contributing nothing. When you tax the hell out of the most powerful and rich – they create nothing because you expect them to pay their accomplishments in to the government to care for some sorry folks that doesn’t want to be responsible for themselves. High taxes and unions force corporations to move their operations out of the country. This relates to fewer jobs. Unions extract money from their members with the pretense of protecting their rights however; union leaders are climbing the ladder to fortune on promises and dues. Minimum wage laws are ridiculous. Why they may be fine in some areas, but can you imagine trying to eke out a living in New York on minimum wage? It is supply and demand. If business doesn’t want to ante up and take care of their employees, they won’t have any employees to take care of their business. It is simple math and it doesn’t need 50 governmental bureaucrats, a congress, and a president to understand it.

Annnnnd theres the entire problem in Barnesville. Until Gordon does something about the thugs in the school, Barnesville will continue to go down hill. Next year they will start having the testing again and I am so thankful for it. Hopefully it will weed out these thugs.
It's not the chief, its the system itself. When you allow anyone in, you allow everything in. This new testing next year hopefully will clean up the trash in that school.
The students have to take tests in order to get into college and apparently they are passing them. Not everyone that does wrong is considered uneducated. There are some very smart students out there, they just get with the wrong group of peers.
First and foremost, what is the common denominator in most all of the chaos that goes on here? I keep saying this and saying this, the county continues to go down hill, the more this " common denominator" grows. Read between the lines.
Veterans Parkway is Hwy 341, from the new bypass (Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive) to the Hot Spot. When MLK Jr. Drive was built, Hwy 341 became Hwy 41. Hwy 341 now stops at the bypass. The Post Office could not change addresses such as Ace Hardware from 916 Hwy 341 South to 916 Hwy 41 South, because the latter is already in use. So, they had to give this part of the highway a new name. Veterans Parkway is what they chose. Unfortunately, there was no real announcement of this change, only references in the newspaper.
Just think of how many thugs with prior convictions, for God knows what, go to Gordon. They let anyone in there now. My kids will no longer attend that school. I wonder how many are on probation? Can this be made public. I think parents should have a right to know. What if the next shoot out is on campus.

Gordon college needs to expell anyone with a rap sheet and those on probation. Let a bunch of innocent kids get hurt because of all of this BS....you will then wish you had some kind of enrollment standards.
Veterans Parkway is Hwy 341. The apartments are behind the Garden Patch. There are still a lot of good people in Barnesville that look out for each other. Don't give up hope.
I have been over there for a service call and it is mainly filled up with college kids renting. There are two different complexes. I noticed glass had been busted out of the back door of one unit and someone had used a crowbar or some type of tool to pry open another back door. The college kids I met on a service call were from clayton county and they had a guy staying there from clayton county. I am not planning on going back. I had no idea that was in back of Garden Patch. Looks like something from Atlanta in the projects.
My husband and I were watching tv when we heard the shots. It sounded like a fully automatic going off. We ran to peek out the door and one of the guys that got away was driving by our apt really fast to leave the scene. Somethings got to stop here at these apartments, the police are being called everyday. Two guys were actually streaking one day this week. The kids and I say kids because most are college students that live here, they walk around outside here smoking marijuana like its legal. They have no cares in the world. Its such a shame something liked this happened. What's next? We are thanking God that we found a house and we will be out of here within the month.
I just want to say as a Gordon student that i will be ever so grateful when they start to require testing to get in!! It is so frustrating when you go to class (and actually want to be there and learn) and people who dont care too much walk in to class late, are on the computer talking to others online, sleep, and/or text. The professors there have really cracked down on this stuff. This is my third year here and over the last couple of years i have noticed a change in the way the professors attitude towards those little things. Yes there are people at Gordon who do not need to be there and are giving the college a bad name but there are also those of us who want to learn and do something better with our lives! I have a feeling there are a lot of changes coming to Gordon, hopefully good changes! Please give it sometime to improve!! Thanks and God bless!

Can I take a wild guess and say that McElroy owns those apts. I may be wrong. Whoever owns the apts needs to have a manager onsite if they dont. The city police needs to visit there frequently. These apts, the ones by grove street, the ones off of sims street are rough areas. They look decent and are fairly new but they are over ran with hoodlums. This place is going down hill monthly.
What is it that makes this place go down hill. What caliber or type of people is it that is making this place as bad as it is? Think about it. Call me what you will. Dont matter to me.
WOW, how did I know. They only care about the money that is coming in. They have no concearn for saftey or anything else. They contribute to the problem. Im sure Eric or one of the others will be on here defending the family business but whatever. We see a patter and always have. This got brought up last time when things starting happening on Greenwood street. If you have money, you can live there. Start screening people and having inspections. Enforced "quiet time" can be at 9pm. If you are outside with the radio in your car going at 12am then you will get written up and you would be on a one way street to termination. Tighten up on these idiots and make them move to griffin with the rest of the thugs if they dont want to act right here.

Actually, both MoreHouse and Spelman are Ivy League Universities. Gordon College in Barnesville could only wish that it had the student population of MoreHouse or Spelman. im not mcleroy or do i have any connection to him but i disagree with your points.landlords are in the buisness to make money. however its not our job to do the polices job. if someone is breaking the law or causing a nuisance the police should handle it . if someone is not paying their rent or tearing up my propertry then it is my job to handle this. example in point was a big party going on at a ga, ave. house and the neighborhood got very upset and rightfully so. however instead of everyone getting upset with the landlord , they should be upset with the city because not a single arrest was made or ticket written. i do however believe that the police may have been told to not arrest gordon students unless they kill somebody, so lets not totally blame the police. i do own property and i try to do whats right but everyone i rent to is at least 18 and is not one of my children so im not responsible for them. i encourage the police to come to my properties anytime they want and if someone is breaking the law arrest them. another point is that i laugh when everyone talks about the great impact gordon has on the community. it has a impact yes, a bad one. ive only rented to 5 or 6 properties to gordon students in the last 6 years, 2 tenants were great , the others were criminals.i believe in giving anyone achance but i hate seeing tax money , yours and mine, paying for these idiots to come down here from the atl or up from the mac town and smoke dope and cause problms. i think everyone who receives financial aide should have to pass a drug test.its time to lets raise a little heck with gordon and the city about the gordon students.

there is a common denominator. I didnt say it accounted for all of the trouble. However, it is a very very large majority of the trouble. Where there is a bunch of this factor present, the quality goes down and down. You can be all politically correct if you want, but pick a county where it is absent and look at the statistics. Then look at a county that has a high population of this problem. The proof is in the pudding. For this denominator to only account for 16-18% of the population of the USA, the criminal rates are outrageous. Look at just the statistics for the georgia dept of corrections. Dont take my word for it. Look for yourself. Then go to other states and view the same. I know what the problem is and so do the rest of the community. It never used to be like this before. Whites are a minority in barnesville Ga now.
If I were a Gordon student, I wouldn't shop or live in this town. I have heard different people say bad things about this place but the ones talking about it have never been inside of the club so they couldnt possibly know whats going on out there.
There is not a club in barnesville by that name!Also the club that you are talking about doesnt have just one owner it has two so get your facts right first buddy.Why would they want to do liscence checks out there? its in the country! Also they dont do liscence checks in front of any other business.When have you ever saw a liscence check in front of Mcdonalds??

Not knocking Gordon College because this place has been in Barnesville for a very long time. But when it became a college and they started accepting Lottery Funded students the clientele went down hill.
Gordon's standards didn't go up enough to make a difference in the type of student that will be accepted. I don't live in Lamar County but if I did, I think I'd get my Commissioners to have a sit down with the Board of Regents to discuss raising the standards even further. The future of your town may depend on it. I work in Barnesville and I've been noticing for a few years now how the students living on campus at Gordon are ruining this town.
It's funny. Every post on here or any on barnesville.com seem to be written by the same 10 or 15 people. They complain about everything and nothing is ever good enough for them. It doesnt matter what you have known it by.It matters what the name has been and that is not the Crows Nest.In the late 80's it was changed to the Horton's Crows Nest then in the early 90's it was changed to the Horton's Rendezvous.
What's the problem? Barnesville is a safe place, unless you are a car or an apartment. That is all these thugs can hit anyways. Maybe Gordon should have a Marksmanship class to improve students' SAT (shooting at thugs) scores.
I think it is funny as hell. The people of Barnesville (politicians) have been kissing Gordon's A$$ all these years and this is what they get in return. You don't hear about this junk happening in the county because...

I went to Barnesville yesterday to do some shopping, usually I run to Wendy's and that is as far as I go down there, but decided yesterday to go that way for a change, and really wished I hadnt becaues it depressed me so bad, I saw some of the most pitiful people and things, it broke my heart to see what this economy has done to this community. And then you read stories like this, now is not the time for crime people, it is time to come together as a whole and make Lamar County a place we are proud to call our home.
I think anyone should have the chance to attend College if they so choose. I also believe that the probem with Gordon is some of the administration. I believe the Administration in the building with the Toy Soldiers will not allow the Police to arrest unless the person is deemed a thug. I thing that all students should be held accountable for their actions while attending College no matter the background they are from. When the administration lets the police fully do the job then the non-sense will stop or sloww down. I mean the Mother school UGA arrest students that are given thousands of dollar scholorships so why shuld Gordon be an exception.

Gordon College has gone to HELL. I will never allow my child to go there. It use to be a decent school but no longer. I wonder what the crime rate is there? Anyone know? They probably don't like to make arrest because then they would have to add it to their stats. And why would they allow people who have been arrested and convicted to remain at the school? This cant be true???
Oh, its very true. It's all about the money. Even if they are charged with something, the state will still pay their tuition and stuff. After the first year they stop, and they get kicked out. But Gordon still makes that money. Of course, during that year they are here on state funds, Barnesville is left with stuff like this.

It is one of the indispensable reasons this country of immigrants has always come to be one country. And if you leave this school without excellent English language skills, I would be remiss in my duty to ensure that you will be prepared to successfully compete in the American job market. We will learn other languages here
-- it is deplorable that most Americans only speak English -- but if you want classes taught in your native language rather than in English, this is not your school.
Third, because I regard learning as a sacred endeavor, everything in this school will reflect learning's elevated status. This means, among other things, that you and your teachers will dress accordingly. Many people in our society dress more formally for Hollywood events than for church or school. These people have their priorities backward. Therefore, there will be a formal dress code at this school.
Fourth, no obscene language will be tolerated anywhere on this school's property -- whether in class, in the hallways or at athletic events. If you can't speak without using the f-word, you can't speak. By obscene language I mean the words banned by the Federal Communications Commission, plus epithets such as "Nigger," even when used by one black
student to address another black, or "bitch," even when addressed by a girl to a girlfriend. It is my intent that by the time you leave this
school, you will be among the few your age to instinctively distinguish between the elevated and the degraded, the holy and the obscene.
Fifth, we will end all self-esteem programs. In this school, self-esteem will be attained in only one way -- the way people attained it until
decided otherwise a generation ago -- by earning it. One immediate consequence is that there will be one valedictorian, not eight.
Sixth, and last, I am reorienting the school toward academics and away from politics and propaganda. No more time will be devoted to scaring you about smoking and caffeine, or terrifying you about sexual harassment or global warming. No more semesters will be devoted to condom wearing and teaching you to regard sexual relations as only or primarily a health issue. There will be no more attempts to convince you that you are a victim because you are not white, or not male, or not heterosexual or not Christian. We will have failed if any one of you graduates this school and does not consider him or herself inordinately
lucky -- to be alive and to be an American.

Annnnnd theres the entire problem in Barnesville. Until Gordon does something about the thugs in the school, Barnesville will continue to go down hill. Next year they will start having the testing again and I am so thankful for it. Hopefully it will weed out these thugs.

Gordon college needs to expell anyone with a rap sheet and those on probation. Let a bunch of innocent kids get hurt because of all of this BS....you will then wish you had some kind of enrollment standards.

I have heard different people say bad things about this place but the ones talking about it have never been inside of the club so they couldnt possibly know whats going on out there.
Who owns the gas station across from the police department? As a property owner, they should not allow all of those people hang out there. We all know what they are doing! Bet thats a political issue too.
Not knocking Gordon College because this place has been in Barnesville for a very long time. But when it became a college and they started accepting Lottery Funded students the clientele went down hill.
They are on the famous 12 Step Program:
Step 1. Arrest criminals
Step 2. Lockup overnight
Step 3. Go to court
Step 4. Negotiate plea bargain
Step 5. Collect fine$$ and release criminal
Step 6. Repeat.
So if I am taking a rough class in college, it would be a coarse course, right? If I should decide on a two course meal at HH, with your crude cooking, it would be two courses that are coarse, right?
My husband often plays golf at a coarse golf course.

It's that goofy logic that got us in the mess in the first place! College is not a RIGHT! I as a tax payer don't OWE any one a college education. You have to EARN the privilege to be able to go. Trust me if you work hard in high school and prove yourself worthy - scholarships and grants will find you. If you can't achieve a certain level of education to be able to accepted into a college you shouldn't be there - it's not fair to the ones who do deserve to be here - when the professor spends MY child's education time playing catch up with your child who can't make the grade - sorry - welcome to the REAL WORLD!
