Unity in the Community, the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration, will be held Monday, Jan. 17. The theme this year is Keeping the Dream Alive Through the Dream of Change.

U know Dr. Martin Luther King would b ashame if he could c where we r 2day & what we have become. Watching everything they worked so hard 4 b taken as a joke. Even streets named after him r filled with crime, drugs, violence, ect.....ect......Majority of us can't even vote and the 1's that did make it out never looked back once they made it out 2 come back 2 help.... Celebrating is ok, but mayb ppl should get out in the streets and really try 2 help ppl as Dr. King did. Of course the south is still racist but it's more self racsim now so blame ur self...(Lord help us all) I'm more Malcolm X my self

The South is not racist. Racism lies in a person's heart. I do not have it in mine. You are right. Mr. King would be terribly disappointed.

Our kids need to be in school tomorrow, they have missed enough, garbage needs to be picked up, banks need to open, deliveries to be made...sorry it's a holiday but it's time to get busy, I'm working trying to get caught up, and yes other than Easter and Christmas I would say the same thing..AMEN

Thank you Martin (...real name was Micheal) for the excellent educational opportunistic I was able to have in the early 1970's here.

-Excrement covered bathroom walls at Booker School. Never will forget the sight of that. Darwin was right!

-Attended school only 28 days my 5th grade year. Riots kept the school closed the rest of the time.

-Despite being only a mediocre student beforehand, I magically became a straight A student in the new gender separated racially diverse environment.

-Never will forget the sight of the rifles on the rooftops downtown that kept the peace and prevented Barnesville from burning.

Thanks MLK, I wouldn't have missed the history lesson for anything.

Michael wasn't his real name. His real name was legally changed to Martin. When you use the term "His real name was Michael" you make it like everyone is trying to hide something.

I am appalled and disgraced because of the lack of power that our people refuse to possess when it comes to voting, education, entrepreneurship, and employment. Dr. King and others were abused, injured, belittled and some even lost their lives so that we could have the right to vote, attend any school, enter restaurants through the front door and be able to sit inside and eat, etc. Yeah, we may have gotten these rights eventually, however because we are citizens they belonged to us from the beginning. White people didn't have to prove themselves to have any rights. Do you think Jesus would have done this? No, his message was always concerning loving one another so please stop hiding behind the saying "I'm a Christian". The word of God says how can you say you love me whom you've never seen and hate your brother whom you see everyday? How can you be a Christian if you feel there is no racism in the south and this entire country? Racism is alive and well. It's proven everyday.

I agree racism is still prevalent throughout our world but don’t make the mistake of misidentifying culturalism as racism. We have moved forward light years from our ignorant apprehensions and I agree we still have a ways to go, but those who refuse to recognize our accomplishments will never be appeased.

"Racism is alive and well. It's proven everyday".

Here what the dictionary says about racism,

"hatred or intolerance of another race or other races".

Does this apply to black people as well as white people?

Amen, #5, racism is alive, and I see it on this blog. Go to the high school and look at the cafeteria--the students segregate themselves. Look at the dividing line of the railroad tracks in town.

Let's not find reasons to divide ourselves from one another. I cannot imagine how any Christian can find justifcation for racism in the Bible, but then again, I suspect that there is not as much Bible reading in Georgia as people say there is.

Growing up in the South (but being outside of the state and country) I can say racism is alive and well everywhere but it is definitely evident in the South. I am a lighter skin African American so I have not experienced it as in depth as some of my associates but we all experience it. I remember some years ago when I went to a school in a prodominatly white town all the white students came into the room and purposely segregated themselves to one side of the room and blacks to the other I was in disbelif.
It is very true about all the roads/streets named after african americans are filled with crime and garbage.
When i look around sometimes it is as if everything our african american leaders have done was almost in vain. Especially when i look at comments like the one made about how we should not take one day to celebrate such events as today. Its no different than Labor Day, Presidents Day,Thanksgiving, Columbus Dat, etc. For the records most places dont even close to celebrate this holiday, I assume its because they have the same mentalitly as you which is saddening.

When a black man was elected president I felt as if maybe things were taking a turn for the better but seeing as how every positive thing he does or the more he tries to fix a mess that he had no part in creating he is critized.
What is even more saddening is that as far as we as a society. and country have come we still have so far to go and Im afraid we will never get there

Don't be fooled,in DC it's all about power and the ability to control money and resources. Bigots are being manipulated by those in office by using subtle racial innuendo to establish a voter base. It's to heck with what's in the interest of the common man and all about establishing greater power. What does a person in power want? Answer: More power

Racism is a misunderstood concept. The thing keeping racism alive and thriving is government. People don’t realize it because they generate their hatred and racism toward a race of people. It’s a magician’s tactic. If racism can be focused in an alternate direction government is freed up to do more work out of sight. Our government is on a stealthy approach to socialism and one of the major tools to achieve that goal is to keep the people focused on social programs and hatred toward each other. There are probably other motives like power and wealth too.

Our body parts are interchangeable and the color of skin won’t change it. The type of racism fluent depends upon where you might be standing in the world. And since white is the predominate race, racism almost always involves whites. For example here in the South racism is focused on blacks and whites. In the northern Midwest and West, racism would likely be whites and Indians; and in the southwest whites and Mexicans.

Until people wake up and look at the total picture, racism is an evil we will continue to live with.

I want an answer to two questions.

Why don't they make the entire plane out of the stuff they use to make the black box?

Why is it called a black box when it is really orange?

(Yes sir...I saw that last year out in the field but it wasn't black, so I just buried it.)

Early flight data recorders were literally boxes painted black, hence the term "Black Boxes". It wasn't until 1965 they were required to be painted bright orange or bright yellow to make them easier to find at a crash scene. The term "Black" also often implies death and the last moments of fatal flights are often revealed throught the FDR. Perhaps this is a reason the moniker stuck even after the devices were painted.
