Firefighters from Barnesville-Lamar County dedicated the new fire training facility located at the old firing range off Grove Street in ceremonies held Saturday morning

What progress? The only thing I see is Lamar progressing to have a full time fire dept. (which we do not need) Lamar just isn't big enough for that. Maybe in the future, but not right now. Especially with the economy.

and barnesville fire and lamar co fire doesnt hire anyone that isnt a friend or family member! half the firefighters now dont even respond to 75 percent of the calls. they just want a uniform and some lights to ride around with.. they need to clear out all the people who havnt been responding and get their equitment and hire some people that are willing to do some work. their are to many people who want to work and to many unanswered applications sitting around being wasted.

And I'm sure everyone has done some type of prank some better than others to entertain themselves. Sounds pretty humorous to me. I mean its barnesville their is nothing else to do. Atleast he does have the maturity to put his name behind his statement. None of us did. Props to Mr Burnette . Thank you for your suggestion.

MY SON WAS HIRED A SEVERAL YEARS AGO. HE WAS ONE OF THEIR BEST MEN. THE DEPARTMENT SENT HIM TO SEVERAL OF THE TRAINING IN FORSYTH.MY SON WORKED A FULL TIME JOB AND HAD TO TAKE ONE OF HIS WEEKS VACATION TO BE ABLE TO TAKE ONE OF THE CLASSES DUE TO THE CLASS WAS FROM MONDAY THRU FRIDAY. I WOULD SAY THREE OF THOSE DAYS AS SOON AS HE GOT OUT OF HIS TRUCK HE WAS THROWING UP EVERYWHERE WAS WAS VERY SICK AND EXHAUSTED AND DEHYDRATED. BUT HE DIDN,T GIVE UP. EACH DIFFERENT TRAINING HE WENT TO ALSO, MEN FROM EVERYWHERE IN GA. WAS ALSO TAKING TRAINING. DURING EACH TRAINING THERE WAS ONLY A VERY FEW MEN OUT OF MANY PASSED. MY SON WAS ONE OF THOSE FEW. HE RECEIVED CERTIFIED CERTIFICATES FOR EACH TRAINING HE HAD TAKEN. AT THAT TIME,OUT OF ALL LAMAR COUNTY VOL. FIRE FIGHTERS ONLY JUST A COUPLE MORE MEN OTHER THAN HIM HAD THOSE QUAILIFIED TRAING DOCUMENTS.
MY SON LOVED BEING A FIRE FIGHTER. THERE WAS ONE PERSON THERE THAT DIDN,T LIKE HIM. THAT PERSON DON,T EVEN FIGHT ANY FIRES NOR HAVE THOSE CERTIFICATES BUT SEEM TO GET WHAT ? WANTS.
MY SON WAS TOLD HE HAD TO TURN IN HIS RADIO AND GEAR AND WAS GIVEN AN OFF THE WALL REASON. LIKE WHO EVER THERE THAT COMPLETED HIS HIRE PAPER WWORK DIDN,T COMPLETE THEM. CHEF / STEVE HIRED HIM, KKNEW ALL HIS INFORMATION THE SAME INFORMATION ON HIS PAPER WORK.
PLEASE CAN SOME ONE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME?????

A volunteer fire fighter needs to be approved/hired and documentation kept. Most volunteers do earn a small paycheck for responding but it isn't a monitary thing that has them responding, it is love of life. I do not know this lady or her son but their sure is a whole lot of good ole boy bull in this county and it certainly needs disbanned.

Do you think businesses/industries/peopele are going to come here without adequate fire protection? Sometimes you have to step back and look at the big picture. If I were moving my business somewhere, one of the first things I'd want to know is about the fire departmennt.

Yes, they have been coming here before we built a training center. By the way... our fire protection was adequate then too.
This is not the time for ANY extra burden on the tax payers. Look around, our county government has far outgrown the tax base. Look at the county's budget and how it has grown in the last five years. Where is the "progress" to support such an increase?

Most of the county has fire services thanks to the many volunteers who risk their lives to battle fires, extricate severely injured people from wrecked vehicles, etc. Again, these people volunteer. A top notch facility to help them train will only increase safety and make their jobs a little less life threatening. A lot of planning went into getting this training facility built with minimal impact on the taxpayers. A facility like this will not only help to train our local paid and volunteer firemen, it can serve as a "for lease" facility and other surrounding counties can pay and come and train here as well. Thereby, offsetting some of the operating costs that you bemoan. Believe me, I am on the taxpayers side, I want minimal taxation and proper spending of tax revenues. However, the price of operating this facility is a small price to pay by taxpayers to ensure that the men and women who volunteer to be first responders are as well trained and as safe as they can be.

Lamar County has 35 firefighters and Barnesville has 15 firefighters. One year ago, 15 firefighters cuts.

Apparently not enough planning went into this latest boondoggle. The state has a full service fire training academy located in...

..wait for it...

...Forsyth Georgia. Just 17 miles down the road!

What possible reason would anyone come here for training when they could go to the state facility and receive far better training? For that matter why couldn't Lamar firefighters use the state facility and save the money?

Just the latest in the stupid decisions the idiots in charge have come up with! This bloated fire department is nothing more than a bottomless money pit!

When will the taxpayers take back control of their money by any means necessary?

Why you ask? Because people in power like to build their own little "empires". Soon they will be crying that they need a full time county fire dept. AND an expansion on the fire hydrants across the county. (county water expansion) Plus more fire stations and ambulances. All in the name of "our" safety. Well...sorry to break the news to ya...but houses DO burn down. Even ones that are relatively close to fire stations. If you want to protect us...stop taxing us so we can afford insurance!
