Sherif Larry Waller's budget has taken a hit and his jail is aging but he still likes his current home better than the option of taking over the Lamar Pre-Release Center now being mothballed by the Department of Corrections.

having worked there basically the sheriff's department is bringing in no revenue for the county and its costing the taxpayers a chunk.
i don't want to hear from all you waller supporters just get the facts and crunch the numbers we have twenty inmates that the county is receiving 35 per day and we have over 15 deputies plus administrators working the jail full time and waller has the nerve to say he has cut the budget the biggest revenue we had was housing inmates from other counties until he screwed that up back when he lost the previous election and no one would send that revenue back to us cause waller told them if other counties didn't come and get them he would release them on our streets in lamar county cause he lost the election check the records don't try to change the truth lamar county you need to get real and quit electing these good ole boys and get educated

That whole paragraph and you used 1 period. This shows your intelligence level. Either you never really worked there, or is pretty obvious why you don't currently still work there. Regardless, it's safe to say your opinion doesn't matter.

Ok, it's obvious that you're the same guy that posted the first comment. That, or you seem to have the exact educational level as #1. I agree that it's not a term paper and only a blog, but if you want your statement to be taken seriously you should at least attempt to sound somewhat educated.

Apparently Mister Brought Back has forgotten that his current facility is located very near the Lamar County school.

Hostages anyone...? If for that reason alone Wally should be grabbing the other location with both hands.

This sort of thing is what you get when you reelect people that should have never been in office in the first place.

I can assure you the one person that shouldn't be in office is no longer in office! The people wont make that mistake again.

Know your history. The SO was built around '92, and the only school in the vicinity at that time was the high school. Frank Monaghan was the sheriff at that time, not Waller. Waller was elected in '96. So a blind squirrel could see that he had nothing to do with the sheriff's office being at this location.

Also, I would think the school board, not the sheriff, would be the ones that decided to build the current schools in their current location. So once again, Waller had nothing to do with the schools being located where they are.

Then again, I work very near the sheriff's department. I've never had a issue with a potential hostage situation. But since you're so smart, throw your hat into the ring and run for sheriff.

This county doesnt need to spend anymore money. The jail we have will continue to work just fine.

Actually we need one, REALLY WELL BUIILT, SUFFICIENT IN SIZE, JAIL that serves as criminal housing for Upson, Lamar, Spalding and Pike. It will belong to no, but will serve 4 counties....like the District of Columbia. The Jackson facility could be eliminated also.......it AIN'T decreasing the death row list AT ALL.

Obviously you are not from Lamar County. I'm guessing Pike. Anyway, Lamar has been housing out of county inmates ever since the current detention center was opened as a way to make some extra cash and in hopes of defraying some of the costs of running the facility. At times, it has been filled to the gills with out of county inmates and the cash flow was good. But with today's economy, these other counties can no longer afford to pay to have their crooks housed here. You did make one good point. The release center would make a nicde regional jail. Maybe someone could come in and opened it much like the privatized facility in Irwinton. But, as for closing down Jackson, that is one of the stupidest things you've ever posted.

He said the other counties are not sending them due to budget restraints. Like Lamar County we don't have the money!!

You want to talk tax. Obama and the democrats in power want to tax you big time. What they actually want to do is take about 85% of your income in tax, then tax all goods and services, making the people totally sufficient on government assistance. By doing that, they will remain in power and in the cat bird’s seat while everyone else needs government to survive. Those making a million a year will now make 150K while those making 20K a year will now have 3K. You see, you will still have upper, middle, and poor but just at different income levels while government rakes it in and turns us all into a communist. Open your eyes STUPID PEOPLE! Look at China growing strong chasing capitalism while our idiots chase socialism and make us all poor. Yeah the law needs to change. If you don't pay tax - you don't get to vote. That will take care of all the freebie seekers. Attract labor and jobs by reducing tax. That will generate more tax revenue because people will now be off unemployment and paying taxes and those who don’t want to work will have no excuse for continued handouts. Just my opinion!

Trickle down economics has worked so well we are all rolling in jobs and money now. Sure cut taxes on corporations (many of which already pay little or nothing-especially the big corporations). Maybe you filed your taxes on line, but if you looked in the taxes breakout page, corporations pay around 6% of the Federal US tax amount collected. That is ridiculously small amount. And what has this got the US taxpayer who is subsidizing this low payment by paying more individual tax? Lots of jobs--not quite.
Not to mention it is the Republicans, not Obama, who want to continue the low tax rates on those wealthy Americans who are making 10 million dollar bonuses instead of paying their fair share. I believe there should be a new cutoff at 1 million for highest rate and raise it several percent.
We have to quit giving out so much welfare to the corporations and wealthy if we are ever going to get a healthy economy again. After all if the majority who are not making big money don't have any to spend even the rich and corporations will suffer.
Of course, those who spend even a little time studying history know that already. All they have to do is look at the disparity of incomes prior to the last Great Depression to see clearly how well that helps the economy.

Acquire an understanding of the subject along with a personal identification and maybe we can enter into a dialog. Stop trying to hold the individual responsible for the care of the unemployed and lazy created by a government that would rather steal from them than to create an economical environment that would create jobs and tax revenue. I tend to agree with Waller on this issue. ( I can't believe I just wrote that!) Fixing the old jail would be cheaper than buying the PRC and converting it into a county jail. The layout of the PRC is not what you want in a county facility. This just shows that even a blind squirrel like Waller can find a nut every once in a while.

Well, in order to keep a prisoner from being beat up, keep them all separated by 2 cells, and don't let them out at the same time. Sounds like there is plenty of room to keep them apart.
If we have that many people on staff, let's get the inmates back out there cleaning up the roadsides.
Sounds like the staff is there to keep an eye on them while they pick up trash.
This is a good time of year, too. It's not hot enough yet where they will suffer in the heat. Hate to see people suffer.

Who cares if it is hot outside that is what water is for. The inmates need to be out there cleaning up the streets no mater what time of year it is. To keep the inmates seperated in that manner is just crazy. Aparently you have no concept of what you are talking about, yes the PRC is large enough to do that, but it would then take more employees to watch them cause they are spread out like that. Unfortunately I am going with Waller and say good choice and great job on looking out for the community. Taking the PRC and tunring it into a regional facility would be a great idea but it will take a private source to do this.
