MOVE THIS CRAP OUT OF DOWNTOWN, I WANT MY PARKING SPACES BACK!!! "but its good for business" to quote the committee chairman. Do you think my customers are going to walk half a mile to visit my shop with this mess here.
What shop would this be? Afraid to name it? I wish you would so I could be sure to NOT visit your establishment. If a couple days of "off" business due to this festival is going to do your business in, then your business plan is bad to begin with.
With the tough economic times, I would think the added boost of people coming into downtown Barnesville would actually be a bonus for business owners. Even if money isn't spent today, word of mouth gets around. Perhaps people will come in and look around and remember later on that place of business and come back to spend some money.
Well lets just look at it this way, if you live in the area, i either already have your biz or you are at least aware of it. The out of towners, wont be driving halfway across the state to come back for anything other than what they are already here for. Only people its good for is if you sell alcohol/food/gas. If you think otherwise i would prob. say you are on the committee youself, from what I hear they are some of the only ones who actually think that it is good for the town.
Sometimes out of towners like Lamar County so much, they become permanent residents, like my folks did 33 years ago after a drive on the way to Macon. Hopefully, as a business owner, you are always looking to improve and expand your business in any way possible and will therefore take any and all opportunity offered in that direction.
You know your right, I should inconvenience my customers more often so as to pickup the 1/100000 chance at getting 1 or 2 new customers. Makes perfect sense...NOT!! Thats the type of thinking that I believe has most countys up the creek financially. Attracting new people good!....At risk of hurting business's BAD!!!!
Your right, I should inconvenience more of my customers that i have now in order to hope for the 1/100000 that i might pickup 1 or 2 other customers. Makes perfect sense, why didn't I think of that sooner!!.. Think that is the same thinking that has alot of countys in financial trouble.
Well we give businesses tax breaks to move in so they can make a profit and move on when the tax break expires. Local businesses that have been carrying the load of the revenue for the area get nothing. We give foreigners all the benefits and nothing to our locals. This all makes perfect sense, right? The problem is city officials make chump change compared to what a comparable position in a reputable company pays. So what we end up with is under educated people making decisions that affect the community while the majority of good business thinkers take better positions in the market. These people only pay attention to the short term affects of their decisions. The same is true with law enforcement. You can be an officer for 26-30k a year or work in shipping at a company and make 35-40k. It goes as far as the president making half a million a year. He has to deal with the opinions of every citizen for the same pay that a CEO gets or less. So anyone with a brain will take the better position. So in the end we are lead by idiots.
Couldnt agree more #13, and as for #4.1, trust me in the next few days I will be making a big enough deal at the chamber office over this that it will be very obvious who I am and who I represent. You just dont seem to get it, and its ok. I had a city employee tell a customer of mine to leave before the parking lot was set to be closed according the the sings up.I REPEAT!!! I HAD A CITY EMPLOYEE TELL MY CUSTOMER TO LEAVE!!!!! and thats what is suppose to be good for my biz. I like to party too, but not if I would cost me any amount of business. And I'm pretty sure it will survive the few days closed, but it didnt need to be closed at all had city planners made better plans or at least stuck to the plan that they posted all over the area.

Hope some of the fools park too close to the RR again. One of those trains is going to clean the entire bunch right out.
