The Herald Gazette wishes you a happy Fourth of July to celebrate America's independence. Stay safe on the roads, enjoy time with friends and family and celebrate responsibly.
The Georgia State Patrol encourages drivers to buckle-up this weekend and plan their travel activities with safety in mind. The 78-hour July Fourth holiday travel period began Friday at 6 p.m. and ends at midnight Monday, July 4.

If you want to get on your soap box about Government spending and your tax dollars, stand outside the supermarket and watch all the folks loading up their vehicles with groceries purchased with an EBT card, then follow them to their reduced or rent free apartment that their "check" comes to every month....compliments of the working American as a thank you for spitting out numerous babies with different daddies. Lay off the GA State Patrol who are out working the dangerous highways from the idiots who prefer to disobey the driving laws and then spout off about their "rights". It isn't your "right" to endanger yourself or others on the tax payer funded roadways.
Most agencies deny ticket quotas. Yet, get close to anyone in law enforcement and they will admit, they will be brought before their superiors as to why so few tickets have been written.
Many police/sheriff agencies these days take federal monies for equipment etc. The problem is, you, as an agency are now beholdened to the feds.
Yesterday, we celebrated our independence from the King of England's tyranny. Folks just got sick of being taxed, unwarranted check points, property being seized and their houses being raided to ensure the citizens were complying with the stamp act. They finally had enough.
Just because a judge has said it's okay to set roadblocks and halt folks for no reason other than to "check" doesn't mean it's constitutional.
Power is very seductive, regardless in what degree this power comes.
I would like to see law enforcement agencies adhere more to the constitution and refuse unlawful orders. However, until the police academies quit training the "us against them" mentality of policing, until they drum into the the trainees heads they ARE public servants and not "Officials or Authorities" this will never happen.
Police have a hard enough job. It is my opinion it would be a lot easier if they stopped looking at everyone as a bad guy and began treating the folks who pay their salaries as allies.
