As the fourth annual Back to School Bash nears, organizers hope to fill enough book bags for the nearly 1,800 children who, along with their parents, will fill the recreation complex track and infield. The event will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, two days before the start of school. There will be free school supplies and book bags along with plenty of fun activities.

Yep- all the parents would need to do is lay of their beer and cigs for a couple of days or not get their nails done this week and they could afford the school supplies. But by giving the supplies to the kids for free, we are enabling them to keep up with their expensive habits.

If the community did not have this there would still be children going back to school without the items they need. Some parents feel that their needs should be met before the child's needs. Instead of fussing about it you should donate a $1 worth of pencils or paper and help the future of America!

Some of you are the coldest, meanest people around! While there are always some who take advantage of any system, there are quite of few who are truly hurting due to our fine economic mess.

Makes me ashamed to be a Lamar county resident.

And NO, I am not taking any handout or entitlement...heck, I probably earn more than 90% of you.

I couldn't agree more, lc3. I think it'll send these kids a strong message: if your parents can't or won't buy you school supplies, then you don't deserve to have any. I think cutting out entitlements is the best way to punish children whose parents are poor or neglectful.

I think that parents who receive welfare should buy there kids own school supplies when they roll up in the car rider line in a new SUV, nails and hair all done, but yet pay for food with food stamps. They should also take the tax deduction they get for there upteen kids they have and buy school supplies. I think Family and Children Services need to do home visits to re-evaluate whether these people truely need basic needs. If they have all this other stuff that is high dollar apparently they are mooching off the government and don't deserve it. Send the kids to school without then they should contact DFACS to look into the situation further. If you can not afford to clothe,feed, and educate your children then do the world a favor and keep your pants on and don't have any or anymore than you already do.

Quit whining about what these people gets. Go to the DFCS and apply for the services and see what the application details. Some of these are working parents too and just because they get food from a card doesn't make them bad.I am not saying all are worthy of it but you can't do anything about it whining on the web. Start a petition and take it to higher grounds. But think of what would happen to some of these kids without the help.
People need to understand that not all are not out to just have babies to get funds.

I think you should become a Cashier so you can truly see how bad people are mooching off the government. It's worse than you think. Sure there are people that NEED the funds, and sadly, those are the ones who don't get much while others are running around with 8 kids and 3 thousand a month on those stamps. I think you should get in the free dictionary line. You could study words like "there" and "their" or possessive word forms and plurals like "kids" and "kid's" instead of getting "your nails and hair all done". :-)

i have been to the bash two years and it helped out when i didnt have the money to get everything they needed not cause i was getting my nails or hair done but because at the time i was the only one providing for my kids no i dont drive no suv i drive a lil car that gets me back and forth to work so just because someone needs help doesnt always mean they r drunks or sorry parents

What's a shame so many hold these children responsible for their parents and then don't do anything but complain about it. I know we learn from our Mama's and Daddy's and sorry parents are likely to breed sorry children but just imagine the difference one of you could make in the life of a child by being a positive influence. Sometimes all it takes to break a cycle of poverty is for one adult to help a child believe that they can be better than what conceived them by choosing to do right and to work hard to have more in life.

Some of these comments are pure nonsense! Not everyone who is poor is poor because they are lazy or uneducated....those who suggest such show their own ignorance. You can lose everything you have in an instant. If you don't believe me study the stock market crash of 1929 and The Great Depression. Some people have been hit really hard financially through layoffs, pay cuts, natural disasters,etc. They work really hard and are doing all they can to make ends meet. Does the system get abused? Of course it does, and there are changes that need to be made. However, there are plenty of people with money who had everything handed to them as well through inheritances, family businesses, etc. The fact of the matter is everyone will find themselves in need of help at one time or another.....maybe not financial but help nonetheless. I hope that the people you turn to in your time of need show some of you more love and concern than you have shown with your vile posts....punish children who have done nothing wrong??? Really??? I wonder what Jesus would think about that?

I find it quite amusing that you say that you can't speak for Jesus and then you quote a scripture that doesn't fit this topic at all. First of all, we are talking about children, not adults....are we saying that children should not be fed unless they work? Second of all, food is not being distributed, just school supplies that were donated by individuals and businesses in the community. Finally, who said that the people bringing their children to this event do not work? This type of stereotyping is wrong. There are affluent people in this community, some of them retired, who do not work. Should they eat? You may not be able to speak for Jesus but you can certainly answer the question what would Jesus do. As I re-read comment # 10, I find refrences made to the following:

In comment # 10.1.1 it says that we are not talking about adults, we are talking about children. There seems to be a bit of contradiction in these two comments.

Please re-read the following comments, #2, #2.1, # 3.1, #5, # 5.1, # 8. I think a part of these posts do, as a matter of fact, address the parents.

Instead of holding the parents accountable, we (tax payers) flip the bill for everything their child needs. It is always about the children, so they continue having more and we (tax payers) continue on supporting the children untill they reach the age of 18. Then even after 18 we continue supporting them because the children grow up with no positive role model and end up turning to crime. Which in turn they end up in the tax payers hotel with three meals and a cot. Does it seem wrong, you dog gone tootin it is wrong! No, let me make it clear for you. TAXPAYERS did not pay for these supplies. The supplies were DONATED by others, given to ANYONE regardless of financial situation. If I want to donate something, that is not TAXES paying for it, that's me donating my OWN PERSONAL HARD EARNED DOLLARS!

Which is my choice. Those who did NOT donate, have given NOTHING to help, therefore their opinion should be kept to themselves because they have NO RIGHT to say a darn thing about what OTHERS decide to donate. Yes, any tax paying citizen has a right to complain when it's WELFARE dollars (our taxes) being mismanaged. But NO ONE has a right to complain when it's CHARITY to whomever the charitable organization deems fit to receive said donations, UNLESS they have donated to said chairty, THEN their complaints should be brought to the chairty organization in questions NOT aired in a public forum like this.

There are people who work their butts off every single day of the week and still struggle financially but then there are some spoiled little brats (probably some of you idiots that are posting this crap) that had everything handed to you which is the only reason you feel the need to act like you are above everyone else...and whoever made the rude comment about "squirting out kids" is a complete jerk...I know ppl who had children and had a great future ahead of them but life threw them some curve balls that were completely unexpected. I grew up poor and I survived. Why does everyone think that everything should be given to them for nothing. I understand that some people work hard and are hit with unexpected things that could very well put them out on the streets. But when I grew up the CHURCH helped the less fortunate not the people who work just to make their own way.
Yes I do wee people who work as much as I do but yet when they want to eat they whip out the EBT cards. If they work and earn as much as I do and they still can't pay for their food seems to me that they are not very concietuous about the way they spend their money. The welfare system was created to help peole get back on their feet not a way of life that a lot of people think. Do without some of the luxuries that you have and be more spend thrifty and you could buy your kids the things that are needed for school. But when I went to school all of these items were not concidered a neccessity.

I realize that there are some people who abuse the system and that needs to change. However, the issue with me is the attitude toward those who utilize the programs that the government already has setup to help them. They are all lumped in the same category....uneducated, lazy, moochers. While this my be true in some instances, there are a lot of instances where this isn't the case at all. Even you are stereotyping these people in your blog. From your attitude toward them I think it's safe to assume that you probably don't really know too many of them personally. You referenced the Church...who is the Church made up of? I find it interesting that a lot of churches today receive assistance from the government through grants and that's considered okay but yet some of it's members bash individuals who seek to do the same through government assistance programs. Please tell me the difference between the two because I don't see it....except maybe that a large chunk of the money never reaches those it was intended for because it is filter out to pay the people who are administering the programs...hmmm. When I grew up the Church helped the less fortunate as well, the only difference is they didn't try to make a profit off of them. Every Church isn't like this, in fact a lot of them aren't like this....but many of the mega churches today are...seen it first hand. As far as your comment about people working as hard as you and still whipping out their EBT cards there are a lot of factors involved that you didn't mention like housing and the size of their family. If people got on assistance and then had a family I would agree with you, but for those who had a family and then were hit hard financially through unforeseen circumstances this is exactly the people who should be utilizing this program...not to live like this forever but to get back on their feet. By the way, I find it interesting that the back to school bash, rightfully named I might add, has nothing to do with government assistance programs because these items were donated by individuals and business in the community who still care about the poor. As far as your comment about school supplies, I don't know how long it's been since you were in school but you would probably be shocked to see some of the stuff that these children are REQUIRED to bring to class.

T., thank you for a thoughtful and compassionate comment -- it gives me hope for the future to find there are at least a few people in this community that care about the suffering of others. Many people who have worked hard all of their lives and always paid their own way are having to ask for help now. I hope the self righteous mean spirited people that are responding here never are faced with such a choice because I wish hardship on no one, but it would serve them right if it happened to them. I hope God will forgive me for saying that.

I totally agree with you. I was put in a situation where I was out of work for 2 months, but I still was able to supply my children with school supplies. No I did not go to the back to school bash. I found a way selling a few items to get by. I don't need a hand out. I have been working since I was 16 years old. Yes, I had to buy my own prom dress and first (POS)car. That is the problem with this generation. The kids expect a hand out because they see their parents getting it without having to do anything for it. So they take the easy way out and do the same. So how do you expect to break the chain? I broke the chain with hard work and dedication. I did not have a spoon in my mouth and was given tough love. I thank my parents everyday for that. I am the first in my family to get a degree. No, I am not talking about the parents that work. Most parents that work don't qualify for welfare. Yes some abuse the system and lie to get what they want. I am talking about the people who do not have their priorities straight and have the luxury items who are also on welfare. Welfare is used to get back on your feet! Not a way of life. For example: if you are smoking and drinking beer every night and complaining about the price of school supplies or raising a child, then you need to get your priorities straight. And for the person quoting the bible trying to make people feel bad should really think. People want to help others that really need it. When it comes to people abusing the need, then that is when people quit caring. I say give the school supplies to the teachers and they can distribute them to the students who are really in need.

Our community is facing a bigger crisis of kids and adults turning to drug dealing and gangs as a way of life because they don't want to be poor and they don't want a handout. It's not what you are suggesting ...if you don't believe me then you've got your head in the sand. Getting money isn't a problem...it's getting it honestly, through hard work and perseverance that's difficult. The sad thing is that the people who are born in poverty trying to do the right thing and be somebody in this world but maybe need a little help (maybe some school supplies for instance) are made to feel like trash if they utilize it. So instead of doing so many of them turn to this type of life. How could some of you be so stupid...don't you see when you take this attitude toward children in poverty you are not "punishing them" they will find a way to get what they need and want. You are punishing yourselves because it is your community that will deteriorate as a result of your own stupidity. Please read the post again. I did not say anything about them feeling bad...just simply making the point that many of them are willing to do whatever it takes to get out of poverty. Statistics tell us that those in poverty are a whole lot more likely to commit crimes than those who aren't. Have you ever wondered why that is?

We all could take a moment here and remember that for some children, the school may be their only safe and orderly place to spend a few hours, time they can get away from the chaos of their home environment and have some normality.
Oh, and let's cut the comments off at the pass- no, I have never taken any form of government assistance, but I do know some children are born into tough circumstances. Always remember, not every child born to parents "on the system" will follow the blueprint.

The new Socialist/Communist Party or what everyone calls the Democratic Party believes that it is OK to take from anyone that was responsible and successful and give to those who aren’t. There is a big difference between those in need and those who freeload. The bad thing is that those sorry worthless freeloaders have ruined it for the honest needy. It is true that you see people driving around in beautiful new vehicles and pay for items with their welfare card. I have always been one to give to those in need but lately I’m fed up with pretenders of need milking the system for whatever they can get. Not giving is going to hurt those that are really in need but it was brought on by worthless irresponsible freeloaders and the ignorance of the Democratic Party representatives who only use the steal and handout method for their own personal gain of staying in power.
The bash is meant with good intentions but only teaches the young how to start a career of irresponsibility and handout hunting. If parents are really in need of the items for their children to return to school, let them apply and justify that need through other channels than a special event.

It is so sad to see such hatred being aimed at an event that has nothing to do with you hateful people. This event is community based, run by volunteers and donations. It did not cost you anything and did not interfere with your world in any way. In actality, it was an information fair providing information to families reguarding local organizations and programs available such as child abuse prevention. The given out supplies are greatly appreciated but also not an amount that would keep anyone from having to provide for thier child. This is not a welfare event, it is a COMMUNITY event and we as citizens are EXTREMELY GREATFUL for everyone who came out to create this event for our children.

If you care to take note: This post transformed from a community project to a national crisis of what America is becoming. It is fueled by people who are fed up of working and paying taxes so that iresponsible leadership can take that money and give it to people that do not deserve and who have done nothing to earn it. People who are nothing more that American Remoras who have attached themselves to government to take advantage of every morsel. Many whom (not all) earn loads of money under the table performing illegal activities. I have numerous times been in line only to have a person in front of me pay with an EBT card yet have enough flashed cash to pay me 3 months salary. I'd bet I'm not the only one to have seen this.

Yes we are fed up. Unfortunately it will affect those who are in real need to weed out the criminals of the system.

No, I believe people who ignore the facts about this event and then attempt to turn it into something that it isn't are morons...this isn't about the welfare system or any other government program, this is about people in the community coming together....moron.

I have lost my job and I am a parent in need of help. All you peoplew that are talking about people taking handouts and abusing the system everyone is not like that. I have worked hard all my life. Do you really think I enjoy having to buy my groceries with food stamps. I feel like less than a mom sometimes because I can't provide for my kids the way I want. I go out and try to find a job everyday but doue to the economy that has been hard. I will work two or three jobs to take care of my kids. I love them and they are my resposbility.I do what ever I can to provide for them . My kids neeed help with their school supplies this year. I f I didn't need the help I would not take it I am not a person that wants to take anything from anyone else. So some of you get your facts straight before you say or write thing about people. Think about it you could be in that same situation one day and need some help. Watch what you say before you say it. Please stop being ignorant. We are all here for a reson so just be kind to one another and try to help out each other whenever you can. We don't help each other out when we see people in need thats why we will never live in a peaceful world together. Stop ragging on people and understand we all need a helping hand from time to time.

You sound like the kind of parent that myself and others are NOT talking about. If you are accepting welfare because you are trying to get back on your feet by all means do so. We are talking about the people that consistantly mooch off others and never work for anything. Charity or not some people don't take pride in supporting themselves. You are also correct in the fact that it could happen to anyone, but some people just whine when things get tough and that becomes their way of life. People get tired of giving to the moochers because the really deserving people (that are momentarily struggling) could get back on their feet faster if so many undeserving people would stop. All I have to say for the comment if Jesus were here....he would be so disappointed in the moochers. Maybe that is why he has lifted his hand from them to live out some of the consequences that they brought on themselves and when they get back right he will put his protecting hand back over them.

After reading this today I can honestly say that I can see where each and everyone of you are coming from. I was the one who belittled those that were not as well off as I. I judged them and thought I was better. Then after a job transfer situation I was unable to make ends meet. I was still too prideful to take a handout or ask for help and certainly to prideful to accept food stamps. My family got fed because I used up all of my credit. Working my tail off 50 hours a week, I still couldn't make ends meet but by this point, my credit was ruined because I was too prideful to ask for any help and certainly too prideful to use food stamps. The only option I had of feeding my family at that point was through food stamps. I was embarrassed to no end to stand in line using food stamps because i knew what people thought because I was just like them. I drove off in my nice car because that was the only car I had. My credit was so ruined and I had not one extra dime to my name so I had no other way to get around. Putting my car up for sale wasn't an option because it was the only vehicle I had to get around in and I knew with my credit being bad at this point I would not have been able to get another one or if I did it would be something that wouldn't be reliable. Having to use food stamps made me feel like crap. I felt like I didn't deserve anything. I didn't even deserve for people to give me things because others would judge me like some of you are doing. How do you know that the woman buying groceries with her nails done didn't get them done as a birthday present from her mother or a friend? How do you know that the car they are driving off in isn't their only source of getting around? How do you know that she isn't sharing that vehicle with a husband who is working just as hard? I had to get to the point where I didn't worry about what people thought about me. I knew my situation and I couldn't worry anymore about what people thought about me. I said all of that to say this - "Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again." - Matt. 7: 1-2. I judged others so that situation became my situation and the good Lord taught me a very good lesson from it. You don't know that person behind the register. You don't know what they are going through. Sure I know people abuse the system and that is definitely wrong. I am all for running a background check, drug screening and anything else if it would help this situation in our country. I would have been happy to do all of that. but just don't judge people. It's wrong and only God knows the truth.

Very well stated post to the last blogger (#20)! Kudos!

So many of the comments on these stores saddens me. So quickly we jump to the negative or pass judgement. Not everyone is looking for a handout or looking for a way to abuse the system. In all actuality if there are people that are doing these things its not us to judge them anyway. That's the job of our God. Not us.

I am a young woman in my early 30's who at one point in time had to use food stamps. I have a nice paying job and drive a decent car. My hair is done and i maintain my own nails. Yet i was in the grocery line using food stamps. There are people like some of you that would rapidly think that i had a house full of children with no father that have "popped out" as i've heard several people say.

In reality I was caring for siblings after my mother had passed away from cancer. I was not only paying rent and utilities for my own home. I made sure that everything was taken care of on their end as well. So, no there wasn't enough money for groceries sometimes. I often went to bed with an empty belly and empty pocket to make sure they were ok

So, if they were young enough to need school supplies like that then yes i would be one of the first ones in line. You don't know the story until you open the book and read the contents.
