It’s easy to forget about them.
We ride past the monument bearing their names almost every day but we seldom notice it. It is just part of the landscape on the courthouse lawn.
They are the monument men – an all-male roster thus far, thank God. I’m hoping no new names are added to the monument but that of a female would be exceptionally difficult.
The monument is to the men who have given their lives in combat. I visited it Friday as the first name from the euphemistically titled Global War on Terrorism was added.
Davy N. Weaver was an Army master sergeant. His Humvee hit an IED in Afghanistan. He died, plunging the men in his unit and his extensive family back home into deep grief.
I was there when his mother first laid eyes on his coffin as it was unloaded from a jet at Warner Robins AFB. I sat through his funeral in a packed country church. I watched as he was laid to rest with full military honors.
It was a sad time. That sadness was rekindled as I stood with his family once again to watch his name etched into the marble.
This monument is in Barnesville but similar ones mark town and courthouse squares throughout this great nation. They list the names of those who died in hellholes worldwide to protect our status as the world’s foremost nation – its lone superpower.
I wondered as I watched the etching if we can still claim that title. Certainly, the USA is no longer an economic powerhouse. We import more goods than we manufacture – a sure recipe for our downfall.
Our much-ballyhooed ‘stimulus’ plan raises taxes on small businesses considerably. Most of those Americans still employed work for such businesses and increased taxes imperil those jobs.
Such taxes make the assumption that government provides a mechanism or system that allows businesses to thrive. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Government is the small businessman’s worst enemy. Big businessmen are not crazy about it either.
Another $900 million in stimulus funds go to rebuild the Gaza Strip where we were not even involved in the fighting. In fact, the stimulus package doubles foreign aid when we can’t cover our own bills here at home.
There is just something I cannot fathom about selling bonds to the Chinese, a highly productive population, to raise money to increase entitlement payments to the least productive sector of our own population.
Those same Chinese killed some of the men whose names mark our memorial in the Korean War section. Now they are a strong ally and we would be deep into the manure without them.
I thought about all this as I watched the stone artisan do his work.
I wondered if the dead would be as willing to march off in service to what’s left of the country they knew as they were when they committed to their own personal death marches.
I concluded that most probably would.
I wonder if I will be able to make that same judgement 10 or even five years from now.
Will what we have left be worth fighting for?

























All freedom loving Americans need to unify with each other and ask our government officials the tough questions. Because we are headed for a police state where the rights our ancestors fought for will be swept aside along with our ability to defend ourselves from a government gone hog wild.
My personal opinion is that our Congress, both Democrats and Republicans, are about the most self serving people in the country. Their #1 job is to get reelected, not to serve the people. That's why there is there are so many earmarks and pork in this latest stimulus. Speaking of pork in the (non)stimulus plan, you couldn't find more pork at a Jimmy Dean sausage and bacon plant. And we get to pay for it. Why is it in there? Because it makes them look good to their constituents. We people are so gullible. Nine hundred million to the Gaza strip... thanks a lot Hillary.
I say we need term limits on Congress. The president can only serve two terms. Make it two terms for the Senate (12 yrs total), and six terms for the House (12 yrs total). The Senate is already structured so that every two yrs, a third of the Senate is up for reelection. This career politician mentality is killing us all. Ted Kennedy, 47 yrs in the Senate. The Constitution was written to defend us from tyranny in government, most particularly in the executive branch. We need the same in the legislative branch. Of course, Congress would never introduce legislation limiting their terms.... Just a thought.
I place the blame at the feet of our elected officials, who seemingly have developed a different world from ours.
I believe we are at a point that the true patriots, need to rise, and demand a return to the origional Consititution, instead of the
ideology of make laws to suit those who cry the loudest.

We are all socialists now - as Newsweek proudly heralded recently. But the blame lays squarely on the people. Freedom takes work and who is willing to work today? Many people are satisfied if they have their plasma TV and 6 pack of beer. Those are exactly the people Socialists love. If the citizens of America fail to get up out of their easy chairs, we will be servants to our government instead of it being our servant.

It’s also interesting how we so quickly tie patriotism to the bottom line in business. It’s not surprising, because this country was started by land owners who didn’t want to pay taxes to the mother country. It doesn’t take a historian to figure out that most all our individual rights derived from when someone, some way, gaining an economic advantage and that it’s the competition for the world’s natural resources which ignites most wars.
What has changed, is now, big business, has for some time, transcended national borders, and it’s the deregulation of this business and the financial sector which is bring down this country. I have become less concerned about this country’s status as a super power and more about the quality of life of the common man. In my eyes, what makes a country great is not for, those who have already made it, to make more, but those who haven’t yet to still have the opportunity to do so.
At one time in my life I had to march off to war. I never had to fire the weapons system I was trained on and everyday I thank my God I was never ordered to. Within 20 minutes it would vaporize 3000 cities. It goes without saying; none of us would be here today. Would I go back today? Hell no… to stop this insanity…. now that’s what’s worth fighting for.
People are going to have to retrain to what skill sets are more marketable. Technical jobs are still very much in demand. This is one way to reestablish this country’s manufacturing capability. College enrollment is on the increase so folks are starting to wise up.
I agree with the retraining. I currently am enrolled in school, and the recent classes I've taken really shed a lot of light on our current events.
In the Declaration of Independence the role of government is pointed out.
".... That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed."
From there we see that governments are formed to secure rights.
And what are these rights? Well, they aren't all spelled out, but among them are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
Where do these rights come from?
According to the Declaration of Independence; "...(We) are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable Rights..."
Rights come from the Creator not government. Government is formed for the sole purpose of securing our rights. Nothing more nothing less.
I will be bold and point out other Natural Rights that we inherently have just for being create Human beings. Among Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness we also have:
a right to the entire Fruits of our Labor,
a right to private property,
a right to privacy,
a right to defend ourselves, our families, our neighbors and our communities
(the list goes on and on and on)
Our rights stop though at the point where they encroach on another individual's rights.
When we look at Government, don't think of it as some kind of autonomous entity that does what it wants to do. Think of Government as an entity that must submit to and protect your rights.
Unfortunately though, government doesn't necessarily agree with this.
