Back in 1996 I recall sitting outside Jimmy Burousas’ office waiting to speak with him about a man that he continued to let out of jail on bond. The man had physically assaulted my aunt and threatened to kill her on several occasions. I waited b/c he was talking to someone. I heard them having a good old time laughing and talking like old friends. After about 10 minutes the man emerged from Burousas’ office. I went in to speak with Burousas, no, to plead with him to stop letting this man out of jail on bond b/c if he didn’t this man would surely kill my aunt. Well, Burousas paid about as much attention to me as one would pay to a wall b/c walls don’t speak. After realizing that this man had no interest in speaking to me I simply got up and walked out of his office and I really don’t think he noticed that I had left.
It was a few months later that my aunt was killed by the very man that I warned Burousas’ about. The man killed her one day after Burousas once again let the man out on bail. The man that was speaking to Burousas when I went to meet with him was in fact the same man who killed my aunt. After my aunt was killed, the Griffin news paper interviewed Burousas and asked him how he felt about letting the man out of jail and Burousas replied, “I feel good about it.”
In my honest opinion the judicial system is corrupt and derelict. I especially feel that way about the Towaliga Judicial district b/c it’s imbued with corruption and decadence. That situation changed our family and really I don’t think we’ve recovered from it. If the system did its job, my aunt would be alive and a daughter would have had her mother to help with her prom dress and her graduation.
I pray that the Burousas family receives justice. No one should have to deal with such a tragedy b/c it could either bring a family together or destroy it.
