Lamar countians have the opportunity to go to the polls today to cast ballots in the E-SPLOST referendum. If the referendum carries, a currently implemented one percent sales tax to fund education in the county would be continued.
Polling places throughout the county will be open until 7 p.m.
The issue drew light interest from early voters.

Besides that, I haven't noticed a big jump in test scores since we got the new football field or the fine arts center. Only 60% of seniors passing, we should be ashamed. Buy some Dr. Seuess books for those seniors with the money.
I fully agree with other posters who say the BOE should stop spending money on ANY non-essential (such as a Fine Arts Center and Football Field or in the case of the new ESPLOST monies for a "Charter" School) and making multi-year commitments beyond the Extra Sales Tax monies already set term. But unfortunately these people believe, and effectively are, beyond the control of those of us who pay the bills and are going to do what they want regardless.
So those of us who worked hard and actually own something are in the position of having to either vote for SPLOSTs or get stuck paying for everything with higher property taxes.
Unfortunately the sensible option that allows the taxpayer to tell our government officials to STOP SPENDING EXTRA MONEY is not available since they will just spend anyway and get the money elsewhere (like property taxes).
I for one will vote against any sitting member of the Board of Education and County Council in the next election.
