does anyone know why Barnesville and Lamar are eligible for such a low amount in comparison to other counties? I would say per capita but is Upson really that much bigger than us?
$36,642 is what Barnesville-Lamar is getting. Is Upson bigger? Just look at the size and number of businesses in Thomaston. Of course Thomaston is bigger, they have many more businesses, and more people living there.
Of course what Lamar receives is a meer pittance. That’s because the population is a nowhere near that of Macon-Bibb (154,709) and just 2/3 the size of Upson County (27,597). Barnesville-Lamar is only (16,961) (according to 2007 census).
With a quick estimation, Bibb gets 2.96 per person, Upson gets 2.53 per person and Lamar gets 2.15 per person. And since this is based on population and crime statistics, of course, Bibb has a lot more crime than Lamar, and Upson has more crime than Lamar, because the population in both is bigger than Lamar, therefore both areas would have more criminals.
Yes, this seems about right, it’s not that other counties more, it’s that Lamar County isn’t as big as the other counties. Lamar county got it’s fair share, if the area wants to see an increase in grants, then they should do more to bring people in, NOT run people out as the area has a habit of doing.
The community has no one to blame for lower funding than themselves.
Your post is an excellent one. There's nothing like stating the facts to support an argument. Just one note on Macon & Bibb Co. They need all of the help that that they can muster to fight crime. Just pickup a copy of the Macon Telegraph & News on any given day, and you will see all of the reported cases of theft, drugs, and murders going on in that city and county. And, that's just the cases that are being reported, and doesn't take into account all of those that aren't... Be glad that you have the quality of life that is Lamar Co. and Barnesville, Ga. They need to double -- or triple -- Bibb County's stimulus package for crime prevention. The quality of life there has to be the pits.
well they are asking for $11 million to fix the street... so forget our safe town and forget making more jobs...as long as we have smooth streets i guess we can make do..right?
The problem is not that there is more crime. The problem is that the justice system is to easy on those who commit crime. In a round about way, the justice system encourages crime. On the other hand if the justice system held those who commit crime accountable and let the criminals really pay for the crimes they commit, I bet we would all see a reduction in crime. Therefore, the people are to blame for rising crime rates because the people don't hold those they elect accountable for failing in their jobs. They just continue to elect them. We reap what we sow. The crops have really been bad too.
Fluid social change can only materialize if two circumstances are met. One, the human value system, which consists of our understandings and beliefs, must be updated and changed through education and thoughtful introspection. Two, the environment surrounding that value system must change to support the new world view. The interaction between a person's value system and their environment is what influences human behavior.
For example, in our culture, "ethics" is really is a matter of degree, for our social system promotes and rewards competition and self-interest. This perspective doesn't just "lead" to aberrant behavior... it creates it directly. Corruption is the norm in our society and most people do not see this, for since the society supports this behavior, it is considered right and normal... or as a matter of degree.
Given this understanding, there is a fallacy that has emerged where certain groups are deemed "corrupt" and everyone else is "good". This is the age old "us and them" world view which has no basis empirically, for it is, again, all a matter of degree.
For example, there is a large movement of people who constantly talk about "The New World Order" and this notion that there is an elite group of people who have been trying to take over the world for a long time and have manipulated society in various ways to further their goals.
This, of course, is true to a certain extent.
BUT, the failure of awareness is that this "group" is not a group at all. It is a tendency.
If you took out all the people at the top who are engaged in global hegemonic rule, it would simply be a matter of time before another group stepped in to seek the same ambition. Therefore, it isn't the individual people or groups that are the problem. It is actually the conditions upon which those people have been accustomed and indoctrinated by. Of course, many argue against this view with the escapist notion that it is "human nature" that causes this competition and need for dominance. This is unsupported by the facts. In reality, we are nearly clean slates when we are born and it is our environment that shapes who we are and how we behave.
Therefore, in order for TRUE change to occur, we must spend less time battling the products of this sick social structure and more time trying to change the root causes. As difficult and daunting as it may be to think this way, it is the only way our world will change for the better.
We can continue to stomp on the ants coming out from under the refrigerator, but until we remove the spoiled food behind it, they are just going to keep coming.
Those are very interesting observations, and theories about our sociological order. And, without generating a lot of hyperbole in responding to your views -- let's just say that maybe we should ignore the health concerns of the ants and continue tainting their food supply with a little Salmonella. That 'Modus-Operandi' seems to be in-vogue these days.

No 7 I have to agree with you. We, in this Judical Circuit, have a DA that is more interested in Plea Bargaining, offences that should be made an example of, than prosecuting them. All this appears that he is trying to save money. I feel the DA is elected to make an example of offenders, to deter crime from others.
I would be very cautious when taking money from the federal government. Very often, the monies received from the feds by local communities come with a price tag. In these days where D.C. often plays on the fears of it's citizens, such as giving up liberties for "security", I would tend to travel the concervative route, telling the feds, "thanks, but no thanks". The Sheriff of any county is the highest elected official. He can call on the citizenery of his/her county for extra help when needed. Is a combined 36,000 dollars worth the feds butting their noses in our local business? For me, the answer is no.
