Reports out of Lamar County High School Thursday at noon indicated Pike County has declined to play Lamar County in football next season, thus ending the annual Battle of Potato Creek at least for awhile.

Lamar holds a 21-7 lead in the all-time series but only a 6-4 edge the last ten times the two schools have met. Most of those games have been close.
The schools are 15 miles apart and most of the people in the two communities know each other, work with each other and or are kin to each other.
It's "clean, old-fashioned hate" on a smaller scale.
Come on Pike, do the right thing. The money the home team makes off this game alone for tickets and concessions is way more than the other four home games combined.
WOW! I hope someone with set of cajones in Zebulon will change their mind on this one. I am glad that we don't teach our students this kind of lesson here in Lamar. You can run but you can't hide. Nobody will ever forget this act of cowardice.
It will not do any good for Pike to play a AA team. Pike will need to play up instead of down for the playoff tie breaker.
Carver and Peach GEEEZ! Good Luck Pirates!
Playoff tie-breaker? HAH! They couldn't make the playoffs from one of the weakest regions in AA how do you suppose they are going to compete for a playoff spot playing in a region with Carver-Columbus, Peach County, Jackson, Henry County, Central Macon and Southwest Macon? Mark my word, their non-region schedule will be chock with single A schools or the weakest AA and AAA schools they can find.
MP refuses to play us. Jackson won't play either. I guess to get some of the area schools to play we'll have to play up in two years when the GHSA reclassifies again. With our program on the upswing, I'd be open to playing Griffin, Upson-Lee and/or Spalding but they are all in a region that has 11 schools in it so they probably won't have room for non-region opponents. We should be able to win the region for the next two years but our region doesn't travel that well so the gates won't be what they would be if we played Pike, MP or Jackson.
Why don't Lamar petition to play up in AAA. Pike, Mary Persons and Jackson are there and that's where the big ticket gates are. Come on Lamar, petition to play up!
That's really funny. I'm talkin' about 'sho-nuff' funny. Apparently, you do not coach where you can get your butt fired, if you don't win alot of games. That would be career suicide for Strickland and Crew. LC's football program has really improved, but they need to comepete in AA with schools of their own size and enrollments. That one's a no-brainer!
I agree. The money that could be made off of Pike, Jackson and Forsyth for tickets and concessions would be much more money than what we already make off of these other schools that we know nothing about.
I don't want to move up to play Pike,MP,or Jackson.Although I miss playing our rivals...I would rather keep winning championships and building the program.
I heard from a credible source that the Pike coach was told yesterday from someone (superintendent????) that he WILL play Lamar.
So the Pike coach tries to weasle his way out, it gets reported to the newspaper, and then the Pike super forces him to play. Wow. A lot of egg on the face of that bozo.

Hey Dufus could it be Coach Strickland got his facts messed up Pike is not only playing Lamar but they are also playing Upson! Too bad you all will NOT take a short bus ride up and play us...Some Griffin High...Ya'll come and get you some, ya hear.
Have Coach Devo give Coach Strick a call and let's get it on. The Trojans schooled UL last year. The Bears escaped with a one point win. Big Blue ain't askeered!
Pike moved up to AAA... It's based on school size and all of the counties have increased their student population which in turn has moved them up to a higher division... Lamar has stayed the same... So either way it wouldn't do Pike any good to play us regardless of namesake or not...
Some of these teams (Pike, MP,Jackson, etc., etc.) could be scheduled as non-region contests - if there is room on the schedule. A 10 game schedule would require 7 of those contests to be played against region opponents. There are 8 teams in the new Region 4-AA. that leaves 3 non-region games that can be scheduled, fwiw.

Uhm btw we are playing yall our schedule is posted 4 next year in our weight room .... yall are our 3rd game of season just fyi! so the author of this post needs to quit spreading rumors
When the original article was written, Coach Webber had told Coach Strickland that Pike would not play Lamar. He changed his tune when the pressure was put on him after the news came out on this and the Zebulon paper websites.
Too bad HS sports have turned to being about the "gate" rather than the kids.
