Virginia Carter, a third-generation proprietor of Carter’s Drugs on Main Street, says she hopes that the pending end of the Carter’s era “will serve as an example to people of what can happen when they don’t shop locally.”

I'll bet you that CVS and Walgreen's approached Carter's as well. But with Virginia's belief in shopping local, she would have turned away the bigger money in order to to the right thing.
Again, if there is anything we can do to keep this town alive, we need to do so.

how does not shopping localy have anything to do with the closing? its called competition!either you keep your prices in line with the other stores or you loose.Wallgreens and Right Aid seem to be doing just fine.

It is impossible for an independent store to compete with Walgreens/CVS/RiteAid/or any other major corporation. Major corporations are able to bully distributors into providing products to them at a lower cost than they can to independent stores such as Carter's Drugstore.

Walmart is notorious for this practice.

Think of it this way.
When one does business with a locally owned small store that money stays in the community.
Who owns Walgreens.....etc? Do they live locally? I guarantee their corporate headquarters are not local.

you dumb AS@# its called business!!what do you want,the government to step in and tell walmart and other stores they cant sell there products for what they want?if you cant compete get into another line of work.

And do those chain stores have your prescription ready for you right away? Does the staff smile at you and ask how you are? Do they care one bit about you?
I know our downtown is a bit thin right now. Perhaps if we supported it more, we could grow it. Use Senoia as an example. Very vibrant downtown. And yes, people from other communities go over there to see what they have. Why can't that happen here?
Back to Walmart as an example. Personally, I think the Walton family is rich enough. They don't need any of my money. They're the richest people in this country- I think- and yet they buy their crap from China, and they pay their help peanuts. That doesn't bother you?

Just for the sake of argument, I do try to shop local. BUT there are 3 local businesses that will never receive anymore of my business. One is a local chain that refused to return an unopened product. The second refused to cross reference a part. (simple process) The third completely ignored me in the store and never asked if I needed help, while they had plenty of time to talk to their buddies. (guess I didn't look rich enough although I had cash money in pocket to buy one of their mowers) Oh...sorry there are four, the fourth refused to let my daughter use the restroom to change downtown.

I get what your saying and I agree, but what does Barnesville have to offer in the way of product? If I want a new suit, where do I go? What about a style of clothing that does not include ethnic styles? How about a lumber yard that stays open on Saturday? How about a movie theatre or a nice steak house? I am all about buying local, the issue for me is product. Until there is something of worth, my money goes outside the county line.

The problem I see with shopping locally is ... there is not a thing I want from the local shops. Other than food, what does the down town have to offer? I would venture to say that the majority of people in Barnesville does not purchase Christmas gifts from local business. The dollar stores can not give quality, and the local business does not attract people who want quality. Simple math, No product = No business.

I hate to see this take place. I can understand the throws of competition can be bad. Carters has always been a bench mark to the square as other retailers who have gone away, have left them as one of the only old time retailers. Good luck Virginia, we have enjoyed your efforts.

Why is this the our fault? 4 other drug stores and a mail order drugs thru Insurance companys did'nt have somthing to do with it? Times like they are now people have to go where they can get a better deal!

Also look at the clothes you buy,the vehicles you drive the appliances you have in your home and wonder why unemployment is so high. remember buy American the job you save may be your own is coming back to haunt us.

I'm sorry to hear that Carter's is closing. Some of the blame may lie with insurance companies. CVS and Walgreens are the only two local options available through my company.

This is sad to hear. Maybe if they had a powerful lobbyist in Washington, the guvment would bail them out.

To Carters customers you will find good quality customer service at Hines. Thsy bend over backwords for their customers with very good prices that are as cheap if not cheaper than the chain stores. David and all the staff are great and even still offer free home delivery to peuole that cannot come to the store.

first, i would like to express my sorrow for the business that has to close. however, all my life even going back to the days of wisebrams, i heard dont go to griffin stay and shop with your local retailers.

well, i tried and here is my expeirence. i needed a prescription filled so i thought i would give the locals a chance versus going out to cvs and spend with the big chain.

at the time, my insurance would fill an prescription up to 90 days. so i first went to hines. there response was they were not set up to fill prescriptions on a 90 day basis, ususally 90 day fills are for home delivery grant up but most pharmacies can fill them.

so then i went to carter drugz, and they refused to fill the particular prescription for a 90 day supply due to their own internal pololices.

so off to cvs i went. they filled my prescription and i had no problem with them.

so if local business want people to due business with them, perhaps they should adapt to changing times.

why would i fill my prescription with carters for a 30 day supply and have to pay 3 copays which would cost me more money in the long run especially when my isurance allows and will pay for a 90 day suppy on one copay.

attitude and adaptation could possibly keep money in the local economy. just saying......

One reason for the shut down because they let people get stuff on credit, which is nice of them, but you know people don't pay them back.

Senoia down is doing well, stopped by today and spent around 50 bucks there.....can't tell you the last time i spent 50 bucks in barnesville---oh forgot---i bouught some of ingles over priced gas to get me to griffin or beyond---do not shop at ingles anymore as well---always 10 register and one or 2 open---i now shop kroger up in griffin---or giant mart if i need something---shop local............nada

I do shop locally. I do shop CVS. So I should not shop there and put those local people out of a job? Price is the issue. I do get good service at CVS and will keep going back. I am shopping locally.

Oh, Is going to Ingles also bad. Where should I get my food from? And clothes - Roses is also a chain so so is there a female clothing store in town to go to? And shoes?

Simple fix people..... Make downtown a tourist trap.... get real stores on Veterans parkway. Make building codes require that we build our new facilties with charm and downtown look. Get product people actually want, not just junk stores, or hair cuts only, bring in competition and we will see change. However, we have people who want NO progress to our community, therefroe we have what we have.... Leftover junk stores, crappy pizza, and a $10 haircut. Welcome to Barnesville!

no real hardware store downtown---anymore ;-(
no real places to eat BUT pastime!!!!
kinda sad----Barnesville --take note--check Senoia downtown out---cool place and places to eat !!!! and no trash hanging around all hours of the day!!!!!!!

I've worked at Carters for 3 years and I'm very sad to see it close. It has been a wonderful place to work and a great experience to help me towards my future. I know now what I will do with my life and the means necessary to get there. Virginia was by no means blaming town for her reason to close, it was a personal decision that was hard for everyone to make. I'll miss Carters and the girls so much!

There's a difference between having them in mind and trying to support them for the sake of. . . . Well keeping them around there's a lot of charities out there bvillian. And it was a great.new yearlol
