That's the problem with the kids today; no incentive to stay in line. Back in my day when we disrupted the classroom or done something that we weren’t suppose to - we had bend over and hold the desk.
I grew up just fine without the slightest mental problem from getting the board across the behind. I think I got them from all the teachers. And even though there was discipline at the school and I tested it all the time – I still grew up to make over a 100K a year. I even have some fond memories of who could stand you up on your tip-toes best.
Many of the kids today are growing up without the slightest bit of respect for others. Many are on the welfare train; and so many are graduating without an education at all. When there is no discipline – there is no incentive .
Please don't make ignorant comments without knowing the facts in this story. Pre-K is for 4 year olds. A 4 yr old should be hit in the face?????? Even back in the day, I find it hard to believe that it would be acceptable for a teacher to strike a 4 year old child. Even with 'paddling' was ok in schools, it was usually done by the principal, not a teacher. This teacher broke the rules and lost the trust that her peers, principal, parents and students had in her. This is completely unacceptable behavior, and pretending otherwise is disturbing.
"Please don't make ignorant comments" - First of all the article said nothing about age and offense. A simple conclusion is a simple slap across the bottom: Which in today's mess of a world would be simple battery. A slap in the face is a definite no-no. However, there are lots of parents out there that could learn how to use some simple discipline like a spanking. It's nothing to go into places today and see kids acting like wild heathens and throwing temper fits while the parents stand around dumbfounded without a clue on how to teach their own young’uns. .
So before you tell me not to make ignorant comments – you (if the shoe fits) and the other parent want-to-bs’ start teaching your kids at home so they won’t be disruptive in school in the first place. After all, discipline should be taught at home. Unfortunately, some kids are never taught and have to learn in other ways.
Well if this kid is in special ed then he/she obviously has problems and in a program to get help for it. It's not always the parents fault. If the parent didn't care they wouldn't have looked for help to begin with.
Oh! Forgot to mention.... You obviously never went to school when paddling was allowed because the first person to get you was always the teacher's paddle and secondly was the principle's plank of wood. Additionally - some tearchers would give you one in front of the class so all your classmates could watch then poke fun at you at recess. So - I'm being so bold as to tell you that you don't know what you are talking about because I lived it.
And I still grew up just fine and a productive citizen and I also pay my fair share of taxes too!
Things have changed.....I remember Mrs Akins tearing my a$$ up with a paddle repeatedly. Never once harbored ill will to her. Now days it would be a law suit and on the front page of B,ville.com
First of all Special Needs children can be defined in several ways. Emotional,Physcial, and yes that title does include gifted! So some children who are special needs still need to know right from wrong. To not discipline a child because they are special needs is not right either just cause you feel bad because they are the way they are. Some special needs are capable of knowing what they are doing and it can be corrected. I am not agreeing with the teacher who did what she did, but some parents of special needs children need to realize that their special needs children could use an A$$ whooping now and then.
I understand your post, but it should not have been made concerning this so called teacher and her childlike actions. This is an adult who should have never been around any children. nothing to do with discipline. sounds like the school system pushed a useless employee from job to job until she did something bad enough to be terminated.
So you are ok with your 4 year old child to be hit in the face without your consent or knowledge? Yes special ed kids need discipline but that has nothing to do with what happened to this child.
So why in the world would you even post something about special needs kids needing discipline when it had nothing to do with this case? Are you saying that this child needed more discipline at home so that is why the teacher did what she did? Makes no sense to me.
OK first of all we are talking about 4yr olds and second we are talking about special needs children. All I can say is, it is a good thing it wasn't my child!
This is not in defense of the teacher or the child , but a good time to bring it up. They dont even count the special needs kids toward their enrollment at the primary school. They ship them off to the elementary school or either dont classify the child as special needs until they get to the elementary school so they will not count toward AYP. This enables the primary school to maintain AYP and maintain their little utopian world where if you are in the clique you can pick your childs teacher and point fingers and criticize the elementary , middle and high schools.Just callin it what it is!The whole system from the SPED DIRECTOR down could face a huge lawsuit for whats been covered up and hidden for years.
I don't even know where to begin with this ridiculous response you made. First of all, the primary school has approximately 20 special education students in K - 2 grade. Do you even KNOW the process of being eligible for special education services? There is actually a lengthy process of identifying a student that is in need of services. Its not like you can just sign a piece of paper and "poof" you are special ed. Do you realize that there are processes and modifications actually taken to keep students in the regular classroom and in the most "least restrictive" environment? See our job is to help the child, the BEST way we can, without them ever having to receive that SPED label. And no, there could be NO lawsuit you idiot...because the report to the state actually LISTS the number of students with disabilities we test. Please research before you type.
Hmmm. evidently SPED hit a nerve. I believe there may be more truth in his/her post than yours.....you have to be an employee and part of the clique...by the way a person in your position should not be calling anyone an idiot- why that's labeling him as SPED- poof! Now he is Special Ed......
You just proved my point, only 20 students in the entire primary school classified as Sped, compare that to the numbers at the other 3 schools. My reasoning for the lawsuit involved all the schools. The IEPs from a couple of years ago at the middle school were a joke and the director had teachers pulled from the high , school and middle school classroom s to try and correct the mess. You are the idiot if you believe there are only 20 kids at the primary school that are really sped, just keep on not listing the kids that need help so you can keep AYP up and your cliques in place, the primary school is almost as bad as Pike Co. with their false sense of superiority. Research that and go back to your social agenda with you and your clique.
this is why im glad we moved from there my kids are in better schools that take the time to understand their needs my middle child is in the sped class and when we moved down to barnesville they didnt even blink an eye when moving him straight to the elementry school they didnt even try to see how he would do in 2nd grade they just wanted him out of their school since we have moved they have moved him up a grade level because he tested so high but lamar co. doesnt have time for you if your not in the right clique just like SPED said and not one should put their hands on a child that isnt theirs. but as always the school and this town always wants to blame the child or the parent LAMAR CO SCHOOLS NEED TO START TAKING RESPONSBILITY for your actions.not just blaming the victims just like when the little girl had hear thumbs taped together the adults on her started defending the teacher and downing the parents and bad mouthing a child that could not defend her self i hope this teacher is not able to work with kids again if she cant control her temper from hitting a 4 yr old she dont need to work around kids and if the readers dont like this oh well
Did you ask for help with your kids or sit back and let them figure it all out? Parents has to be on hand to ask what can be done to help the kids and make sure they are getting the education they deserve.
yes i was there i was at every meeting and every time they wanted to blame him when he had an issue with another student all because he was in a special class it awlays seemed to be his fault even when other kids seen him being picked on and the teachers did nothing i even went to the board for help and got nothing. so yes i tried everything to work with them and they let me and my child down.
Actually, the primary school does a pretty good job of it. The elementary school is the one that puts off all the referrals until they are leaving. That way they don't have a subgroup. It is the only way they made AYP. Check into it if you think I am wrong. See how many go through EIP until the end of 5th grade and then suddenly get tested and qualify. It would turn your stomach. Early intervention in regards to disabilities could teach coping strategies early and have many of these students functioning at a pretty high level. The majority SPED kids are LD and it has nothing to do with intelligence, it is processing problems that if they receive good help for, they can learn to deal with and work around.
SPED, Have you heard of RTI (Response to Intervention)? FOr anyone to qualify for special services, they have to go through AT LEAST 12 weeks of intervention. Kindergarten students usually can't even be referred to start the 3 step tier process until they have had exposure in the classroom for 9 weeks. If they haven't been to Pre-K or any other program, they may have to wait longer because the school has to determine if their delay is due to lack of exposure or if it is truly a problem. After 9 weeks in the regular classroom then they have to do several weeks of small group interventions. After that, then they move to several weeks of individualized interventions. This whole time data has to be collected to determine if the interventions are working. If interventions have not been successful after that, THEN and only THEN can they even be referred for a complete evaluation. THEN a committee has to decide if they meet eligibility requirements. There is a whole lot that goes into these kids than you realize. This is not just something that Lamar County does. This is statewide, even nationwide. You can't just say "hey that kid looks and acts special so lets put them in special ed". It's VERY hard to get them in now. You say only 20 kids are in special ed. How many are receiving interventions? Maybe YOU should do YOUR research.
To #9, YOU should do YOUR Research.
The RTI information you give is not correct. If a TEACHER/SCHOOL wants to see if a child can qualify for special ed services, THEY have to do this RTI process. But, if a PARENT wants to see if a child qualifies, the RTI process can be passed.
When a PARENT requests special ed qualification, the RTI process CAN be done WHILE the special ed process is being done, but RTI can not be done BEFORE or INSTEAD of the special ed qualifying process.
If you would like, I can find the exact statute in the federal regs located on wrightslaw.com Part of this reg is located in 100.503 titled 'initial evaluations'.

to read all about it. Ask for 'DiHicks6', she can tell you all about it.
While you are at these 2 sites, read up on the corruption of special ed in public schools all across the country. Most teachers are blind to this and blindly follow the commands of their superiors. Or, they DO know whats going on and recieve a 'gag order' from these superiors. The same goes for parents who take these idiots to court.
Students can be tested, qualified and served from ages 3 to 21. They do not have to wait until Kindegarten,or 'see how they do first'. The usual school cop out.
Schools do not let parents know this information when they try to get children help, instead they do all they can to fight and get the parent to give up.
This problem was the cause the suicide of school psychologist Allen Eldridge in Pike Co in 2006. The ONLY decent and nice person in the whole school system I had to deal with in trying to get help for my 2 daughters in an 8 year time period.
Comment #8 is correct. I have studied web sites and found most public schools from all over the country for aobut 12 years, and this is the norm more often than not.
They do NOT include sped kids in their state testing reportings, because if they did, they would have to count those kids low test scores and not get that money. It's all about the money, (#&#* it if the kids learn anything or not.
poster #8.1.2, I know the corruption of Pike Co. sped department all too well. Please let me know what you know.
As for a 'lengthy process' to be qualified for special ed services, part of statute 100.503 states that the qualifying process must be completed and services have to begin for qualifying students within 60 days of date of parent written consent for initial evaluation to be done.
This is insane. What does any of this have to do with the fact that a child was hurt by a teacher? SPED, find some other place to spit your venom. This is not the place or the time.
Look if you all know what happened then why dont you just tell the story for all of us. Thata way we know what happened and we can make oour own decision on what happened and weather it was right or wrong.
