Despite protest, county approves Riverview zoning

In front of a standing room only crowd, mostly those who live around High Falls Lake, the Lamar County commission unanimously approved the rezoning for the Butts County IDA Riverview Industrial Park.

Yeah, because Lamar County is flush with new industry, a healthy tax base, and a bright future for citizens seeking employment in the immediate area.

So, I guess you are saying it is ok for our duly elected representatives to ignore the will of the people. Yeah, I guess democracy isn't as important and money after all. After all, that has worked so well for all of the countries that have traded liberty for security.

Errr, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

In this case the "duly elected representatives" are seeking to benefit the ENTIRE county instead of a tiny minority that are opposed.

This place needs jobs and growth badly. The interstate is an excellent location for industrial facilities. But it seems no matter where someone wants to locate here, there is opposition. Remember, this is the place that opposed a cell phone tower in the abandoned Carters site because "it would change the character of the neighborhood"!

Meanwhile, surrounding cities and counties are progressing with new industrial concerns locating there. Griffin, Thomaston, and McDonough have been very successful at this. Barnesville and Lamar county not at all.

On the face of it it seems to be a very bad location for a wharehousing operation.

It is a bad location. To say it's along the interstate isn't exactly accurate. It's off the interstate and alongside the Towaliga on the other side of the lake. This would clear cut a whole mess of forest and plant an insanely large group of industrial buildings in what appears to be plain view of the river. I believe in bringing in jobs and tax dollars. But good grief--why do we want to do it on one of our region's nicest natural features? The industrial park as it stands is very large, very loud, and runs 24/7. When we go adding on to it I can't believe that damage won't be done-regardless of the EPA standards that will supposedly protect the river.

Outside appearances seem to constitute another prime example of your elected officials run amok. These folks are put in office by the people to represent their affairs. The district commissioners should listen to those people in their district and act on their wishes. The chair represents all the people of all four districts and should break a tie based on the wishes of all the people. It makes absolutely no difference on how the individual commissioner or the chair feels personally about an action; if the individual commissioner is in favor of an action but the people are against it, that commissioner should act on behalf of the people and not personal feelings. The political agenda is no longer about the people rather it appears to be all about power and the misuse of that power. Of course, as always, all of this will be forgotten at election time and these same folks will be reelected again to misrepresent the people some more.

This is another decision that was imposed on the Lamar co citizen.I receive a bill from the Board of commission for $90.00 for fire and ambulance fee for 2010 at one time this was dead and i never heard any thing else about it again .It a crying shame that the Lamar co. land owners have to support this service it should be a county wide support in a 01 cent sales tax for this service.It is not right to ask all property owner to pay for something that every one else in getting in most cases free this should come out of the general funds.In Lamar co if you are 75 year old you must pay school tax thank god our country commission here in Gilmer co says if you are 65 with are with out children in school you pay 00000 school tax and that the way it should be. I fell that this is unconstitutional and i think the ACLU would have a field day in court with Lamar co.I'm asking that all property owners to refuse to pay for it, it's Ben a free county service since we had it and it should continue to be free and if you didn't pay would the county fire dept come out and put out your house fire are carry to the hospital are would they look on the list and see if you paid the fee wake up peoples and volt these so call county commission out of office
