Chamber to host political forums

The two debates are well worth attending especially if you want a close-up view of people who will be in a position to affect you when they assume an elected office. Elected officials have a big effect on your personal liberties and history demonstrates they raise your cost of living by the spending programs they endorse.

A number of local issues were recently raised that concerned many local citizens. From land use around High Falls Lake where the citizens group was ignored by Commissioners even after they spent $3,000 of their own money on a study; to a blight ordinance that could have ultimately led to empowering County officials to tell you how you could use your property – to an EMA ordinance that would have empowered County officials to initiate martial law on their announced “emergency”.

Some candidates support TSPLOST – a 1% added sales tax that represents the largest tax increase in GA history. This has the potential to raise $15 billion in “revenue” for transportation projects. You need to know who supports TSPLOST and who doesn't and why.

Apathy is the hope of all those that sit in a government office. Remember, government has the unique power to take your money, your property, and your liberty – and they do so using the tax monies they take from you and me. Private citizens don't have that power and that's why some work so hard to obtain an elected office.

Attending these debates helps you be a part of the process and arms you to discuss candidates and issues with your neighbors. Your attendance shows you care about the future of this country and is one small sacrifice worthy of your time.

Disagreements among civilized people can lead to greater understanding and progress. You care enough about the world around you to voice your opinion.
