The college is really growing, and is working to weed out the people (not serious students) who go one semester on Hope, raise cain in the dorms, bring in drugs and cause trouble. They never attend class. They are just taking a 3 month vacation on the Hope Scholarship dime. Gordon is a good school. There are some brilliant kids there. The classes are rigorous (I took a few and had to study really hard, but then my brain is old) The professors are of good quality, and the new president is already making positive changes. Hopefully more citizens of Barnesville will begin to see Gordon as an asset as it sifts out the troublemakers and nurtures the good students who are there to learn.
Not to start an argument, but some of your comments are incorrect.
The college is not growing, but in reality is shrinking. Yes, they have built/bought more buildings, but their enrollment is down considerably.
Those coming on the Hope Scholarship generally have the grade point average to qualify and basic requirements for college. I say this to say I don't really see that Gordon is doing a lot to discourage any particular group of people from attending there. For that matter, with attendance down they will and are looking for way to encourage more people to attend (serious or not). Yes, some just come to 'party' or hang out, but that happens at just about any college and that type of student rarely hangs in for the long haul. That is sort of a natural process and not really anything Gordon is specifically doing.
I do agree that Gordon is a good school and I know there are some good students there. I look forward to them being more proactive in dealing with trouble-makers as well as better integrated with the surrounding community.
