Alleged arsonist out of jail already

Stephen Brehaut, the man charged with first degree arson for allegedly burning down the Lighthouse Restaurant of which he was part owner is free on bond after spending less than 24 hours.

Originally set for a bond hearing on August 16, Brehaut was granted a $100,00 bond Wednesday by Judge Bill Fears.

Even more interesting is who posted bond.

People who are charged with all but a few certain enumerated crimes are entitled to a reasonable bond under most circumstances. Whether that bond is granted during a scheduled court appearance or, as in this case, a non-scheduled or a not-for-public consumption hearing. Does a $100,000.00 bond not seem reasonable in this case? It seems to be. And this is not a victim-less crime. There are employees without jobs, lenders holding notes of undisclosed amounts, and, of course, the insurance fraud issues had this crime not been uncovered.....if indeed a crime has been committed. I certainly don't think the taxpayers should pay for his upkeep until the time of his trial. He shouldn't be much of a threat to society while out on bond. Just don't invite him in with a pack of matches.

Have you never made a mistake? Don't judge unless you know the person you are judging. Not making excuses for him either but his immediate family, his Lighthouse family and co-workers are all shocked by his actions, but they still love him. He also recently lost his mother to years of battling cancer! Get off the guy, it didn't cost you a penny to get him out of jail and his Aunt Sherry Wise loves him unconditionally and I'm pretty sure she has more money that anyone commenting on this post! Most people will always be there for a family member!

ARSON is not a mistake!what about the lives of all the firemen,sheriff dep. and emergency personal that responded to the fire?what about their lives this clown put in jeopardy?
did you ever think about that?
what about all the employees he put out of work?

He didnt make a mistake, he knew exactly what he was doing. we all have problems but that doesnt excuse what he did. What if someone had of died due to his mistake as you call it. think about that. I dont feel sorry for him.

ARSON is as bad as it gets. It does not discriminate, and anyone who would torch a structure is capable of anything....IF FOUND GUILTY, HE SHOULD BE PUNISHED TO THE FULL EXTENT OF THE LAW. Unfortunately, justice is not always fair........money and who you know is ALIVE and WELL in this County, and Country.

I'm sure his family loves him, and I'm sure they are all shocked. But to call this "a mistake" and tell us to get off his back is silly. He destroyed something of value to the community, put people out of work, put lives in danger, and cost our county and several others thousands of dollars (yes, it costs money to put out a fire!). It was stupid, but it was not "a mistake". Now all that is left is a dangerous eyesore. I wish part of his punishment (assuming he is found guilty, of course) would be the responsibility of cleaning up the mess he made. Maybe they can shuttle him from jail to do 8 hours of work every day ...

I hope his family continues to love and support him. And visit him in prison.

you better bail me out, or i'm gonna give up my co-defendants .........bahahaha.
......a fish would'nt get caught if he didn't open his mouth.....just a theory, the names were changed to protect the innocent.
