In his remarks to the Gordon State College Foundation at its meeting August 22, college president Dr. Max Burns presented some interesting data regarding enrollment trends.

PS, Dr Burns, Walter & Foundation members, this is a not a good picture to parents thinking about enrolling their sons & daughters.
Is the GSC oversight group that out of touch with what is really going on at their school?
Part of the fabric of a college town IS seeing the students, their young faces & vibrant energy. We want them to infuse the town with their energy and their young chatter. Their ideas and their creativity.
We don't particularly want their cigarette butts and empty drink cups all over town, but if the town provides trash receptacles, hopefully litter can be kept to a minimum. Trash tossed out the window is a particular irritation to me, but I tend to think that's more homegrown than student created.
As Gordon shores up their enrollment standards, and continues building its reputation as a fine small town college, I think it will become the town jewel. I'm hopeful.
I've been a critic of the college in the past, but I see some positive movement on Gordon's part.
Don't get me wrong, I like it here, but it is what it is. When you go to other parts of the Country, you realize, even in some metro areas that people have more, respect, pride, and love of their Community. Sometimes I think it's a small segment of the Community, and then I look at all the garbage everywhere, and realize it's a larger problem than that. Sad, Sad, Sad. No Litter signs might help, trash cans would help, but I know enforcing no litter laws, and Community service, or a $1000.00 fine or two would change their bad behavior, and spread like wildfire.
Last year, a young man attending Gordon spent some time cleaning up around the college. He did get recognition for the task in The Herald-Gazette.
The city has plenty of trash receptacles downtown & there's no excuse to toss trash on the sidewalks. Once you get to College Drive, the problems begin.
