Probably Wasting My Time

Makes more sense that a football feild. I can't find or think of one thing against it. However, cost and where the money is coming from wasn't really brought up.
Around 450K should still be lurking about in the General Fund from the Ag Authority rip off scam. Perhaps all of that money can put a dent in the firehouse budget. That is unless its been spent without our knowing.
Hmm...volunteers living rent free? Now there's a novel idea. Since when are volunteers compensated? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of being a volunteer in the first place? And are these volunteers living on the tax payers' dime (as we all know, nothing free is truly free)certified firefighters? Are they trained first responders?
I am also assuming that these stations that must be manned 24/7 take into account that the young volunteers do not stay at the station 24/7...and when they are there, they are more than likely hosting a party of some sort...or enjoying a sleep-over with their under-aged girlfriends. Does the Piedmont station even respond to enough fire calls to warrant a live-in staff? I think not.
In fact, I think its all a ruse so that some young 18 year old boys could move in together and party-it-up outside of momma's house. I am sincerely disappointed in this county for permitting this behavior, and the citizens for not being more vocal. If your house were on fire (cause lets face it, if its a medical emergency, first responders & an ambulance will be tending to you), but again, if your hosue were on fire, would you really want a group of untrained immature boys who may or may not be inebriated, throwing their girlfriends into the back of a truck to be your best line of defense? Tisk Tisk commissioners!

One of those friends

Ok well I'll have you know I'm a close friend to those three you say are not certified and I'll have you know they are. For your information what parties and sleepovers are you talking about everyone out there at the station are of age I do believe. Nobody stays out there but firefighter personal and I know that as of a fact! I just can't believe someone is to blind to see they do all they can for this county and what a shame that you accuse them of such ridiculous tasks. Before you make assumptions you should get the real story...so what if they're girlfriends go out to visit they don't stay and they most certainly don't party it up out there I'm one to know considering I've been out there plenty of times and it was a well stated rule that everyone be gone by 10:30 PM. Everyone listened and abided by that rule. Honestly if I were these three firefighters I wouldnt even want to serve such a group of ungrateful citizens. I just want to thank you three young men for all you do and I hope you'll continue doing a great job it's just such a pity that people want to make assumptions, but i love you guys and thank you for serving the county the best to your ability!
I am going to view this as an isolated project irregardless of the stadium or the theater or anything else being built right now.
I agree with 'Probably Wasting My Time' in that the funding seems to be a bit elusive right now. Where is this money going to come from? Is it hopeful stimulus dollars? If so, that would mean this project is "shovel ready" which it is not, to my knowledge.
Is it SPLOST money? I hope not. However, the above notes show that "Lamar citizens voted to use SPLOST funds for just such a station," Thrash added. Awesome. Add another possible 2% sales tax to our bills.
It can't be Ag Authority as they control their own finances I believe and the commission no longer has the ability to re-appropriate those funds.
As for using local people for jobs, Albritton himself is out of Thomaston. There is nearly $42k taken out of Lamar.
Scanlon Engineering, I believe, is out of Griffin. There is another $11k taken out of Lamar.
So how is anyone committed to hiring local people so far?
Lastly, I would like a little more solid data on the ISO ratings based on a new fire station. I think we should see some data on a potential Suppression Rating Schedule if this station were, in fact, built.
Oh, and lastly, who will create, evaluate, and maintain the standards (i.e. volunteer hours, training hours, etc) required by each live-in volunteer to fall under the rent free plan?
I am not saying that this may not be a great addition and a great safety mechanism for Lamar. I am simply saying that it might be too idealistic without enough real planning and thought to execution and maintenance.
Yes it SPLOST money. $1.3 million not bad. Construction could begin June 1.
83 fulltime paid firefighters want 24 hours for work. Not volunteers. You know how many people? More than 17,000 people. And how many pets? 2,000 pets. Save live. Save homeowners and saves business. Long long time ago... 6 arson, 12 pets killed in fire, 28 people killed in fire and hundred thousand injuries & killed crash.
$1.3 million? Is that what the final pricetag will be?
83 fulltime paid firefighters? Is that what we are hoping for with this new station? If so, why have we not made efforts before in order to secure them as paid, fulltime personnel?
And where does 17,000 people come from? What number odes that represent? Amount of people protected?
And I am really lost by the random pet number. Is that the number of pets that will be protected by a new fire station?
Lamar's population was set at 17,012. Not only 3. What about 18 are paid in the future? We have some soon. Construction could begin as soon as June 1st.
First off the hiring of people from Thomaston and Griffin is better than hiring people from Atlanta. How do you know that none of the employees of these companies live in Lamar.
Secondly, as to the data on ISO ratings and record keeping, I'm quite sure Chief Andrews would be willing to provide this information if you would ask instead of bashing it on this forum. LCFR has made great improvements in training and documentation over the past few years as well as other areas. While I am no longer associated with the department I can assure you that the core group there are making a determined effort to do the right thing.
I own a local design firm in Lamar County and had been told get your company information to
the IDA so that you can be considered for local
projects
No here is the first I have heard of the new fire station design which they are spending money out of county
I have heard many people say you need to support local business but is evident that the
county is not interested in doing so
This my point exactly 'Dennis.' I knew we had talented firms in Lamar Co. I just didn't exactly know who. I had not heard of a new fire station being designed either and I am a member of the Chamber of Commerce and other interested parties. I do hope the commission will reevaluate their commitment to local support as right now it is little more than a falsehood or a smokescreen.
I have been here long enough. I'll allow you to do the detective work on how long I have been paying taxes to the state of Georgia and sales tax in Barnesville.
Hint: I am not from Brooklyn. I lived there for some time.

You're a radical, Andrew. Does Bruce Akins know you're a radical?
Keep it quiet or you'll be out of a job. Remember, he was "Mr. Ag" and I hear he's still hanging around the IDA meetings for a handout.
Allow me to say one defensive thing. No one in this forum is bashing. Least of all me. These are questions that come from the decision made last night at the commissioners meeting. It doesn't matter now what any of our thoughts are as commission has voted. However, these questions and others still deserve to be addressed at the project progresses.
I have no problem with hiring either company spoken of. They are both proven companies and will do a fine job for the money, I am sure. I don't have their entire roster so I don't know if they employ Lamar Co. folks or not. My initial comment was made to towards Thrasher.
[from article]"Commissioner Nancy Thrash, who pitched the plan, said Albritton was committed to hiring local people to work on the project."
I do think that your past association with the department colors your comments and makes you a bit more passive about the issues that could confront such a project.
You mention doing "the right thing." Please define what that right thing is. Is it building a new fire house? Protecting more homes in the county? Finding housing for volunteer firefighters?
Mr. Odom,
I attempted to post earlier to answer your questions but the post was too long to be accepted. I'm sure these issues will be addressed (hopefully before they become an incident). As to my association with the department lets just say that it did not end well. I was, and still are, highly critical of 'The Redneck Brigade' but I have to give credit where credit is due. Chief Andrews and his Officers are trying to adhere to nationally recognized standards and train to them. They have made several major accomplishments for a department of its size and makeup. The live in program in my opinion is thinking outside the box. They have exhausted every other means of funding personnel so this is one option to man the outstations. Will it work? Maybe, maybe not. There should be strict oversight of the program and constant monitoring of the stations. If the department doesn't I'm sure the taxpayers will.
On a side note, I am sorry your first response was not accepted. I will check into how many characters can be entered and add that to the initial message to those wishing to post comments.
I am not worried about if it would stimulate the local economy.
If we do in deed NEED a new fire station let us build the best available at the lowest price possible. The locals should be competative to what the market bares if not it would be the tax payer who looses.
What I think I hear you saying 'Louie' is if this project is, in fact, NEEDED then let local companies put their bids in. I agree with that. We have qualified people (or at least one would imagine) right here in our own county. Let's give them a shot.
We definately NEED a new fire station. Have any of you ever been inside the Grove St station? I have and it's not fit for anyone to be in let alone live in. To the best of my knowledge it was an old gas station and garage 30 years ago. It wasn't in good shape when the fire department aquired it so many years ago. Yes I was around back then. I volunteered back in the early 80's and again a few years ago.
allowing some of the young volunteer firefighters to man the Piedmont station may want to be looked into. This Piedmont station has turned into a "teenage hangout" and not being watched properly.
This is what I was alluding to earlier 'concerned.'
If the station is built and the "rent free" living policy goes into full effect, who will create and maintain standards for those living areas and their occupants.
Also, will they be co-ed facilities or will there be separate living quarters for men and women, respectively? If not, who will handle internal affairs regarding potential sexual harassment should their be any?
I hope this new station will not have the same employees. Coming down the 4 lane, at the Milner exit, a fire truck pulls out, lights and siren going, several vehicles pull over to the side to stop and let it pass. When the firetruck gets about a mile down the road, its lights and siren are turned off. The truck is still traveling about 70 mph. I found it strange and followed. It then turned and went to the station near Grove ST. What kind of fire department do we have??? And to think my tax dollars are funding this kind of fire department!
While I don't agree with the truck continuing on at 70 it's quite possible that the call it was responding to got cancelled. This happens more often than one might think. I will say that the driving habits of many of the people on that department leave alot to be desired, starting at the top. How many county vehicles has the chief wrecked? How many times have they almost caused accidents because they fail to show 'DUE REGARD'. (if you aren't familiar with that term look it up in the state codes)
At the Piedmont station. Free rent, sleeping areas, full kitchen, television lounge with cable TV and much more? I think 9 volunteer firefighters? Josh, Kris and Kevin. and 3 who? and 3 who?
I think that those of you that now want to sound "concerned" should have came to the meeting lastnight. I would have you to know that EVERY volunteer on the Lamar Co. FD is trained. & if you're so concerned about the 'guys' at the station... why haven't you addressed it with the appropriate authority?? I've read all comments on this articla & sounds like some unappreciative citizens of Lamar Co. Maybe you don't understand the time that these firefighters commit to take care of the county. They also have weekly trainings to keep their certifications up to date. I also have you to know that they have trainings at Gordon b/c they don't have anywhere else to gather. This past week they even met at the Elem School. Get your facts straight before you go running your mouth trying to make the Fire Dept look bad.
I am sorry that you feel people are unappreciative. For me personally that is not the case. Not everyone could make the meeting as I could and as it seems you were able to or purport to.
I don't doubt that every volunteer is trained. In fact, I am sure they are.
The concern is over funding, job stimulation, continued training, proper certification, etc. It does not help your argument to speak so aggressively. No one is "running [their] mouth." This is an open forum with room to debate and pose questions and answers so as to continue being an educated public.

Firefighter's wife

I understand this is an open forum. But I also read comments regularly on all issues. I find it very interesting as to what some people have to say about what's going on in the county. There's a lot said that shouldn't be. If you don't know what is going on, simply ask, don't accuse. I also don't understand why most comments turn political &/or racial... they never stay on the topic at hand. I'm really disappointed to see how many comments are made on a political/racial basis.
Now I am hearing what you are saying 'Firefighter's wife.' I appreciate what you are saying and I am asking these questions and posing these issues not because I have an immediate problem with the FD or the commission. Rather, I pose them because I want to see that all parties are treated fairly and that the county benefits in the long run.
I get as frustrated as the next by the idiotic comments that are often left on these open forums and I find them very discouraging.
Thank you for your continued readership and your comments. They are much appreciated as is the Fire Dept. which your husband represents.
you don't have to worry about people running their mouths making the fire department look bad... The boys living on tax payers money out at the Piedmont Station are doing a good job at making themselves and the department look bad. there are facts that are well-known to many concerned parents on the happenings of what goes on out there at that station. AND those facts were addressed to several appropriate leaders of the community before the meeting took place.
maybe parents should mind their underage children(daughters) if these sleepovers are occuring which I doubt. Kris, Kevin and all those boys are great kids and good firemen. Sounds more like angry girlfriends mamas to me. These boys ALL respond to any and all calls with true professionalism and conduct becoming of their profession. Don't hide behind a fake sense of concern. Most of this is petty mama drama and angry girlfriends.
Thanks guys and gals who volunteer to fight fires and respond to emergencies. You're professionals who have been trained well and we appreciate your efforts.

Can you guys not see what is going on here? The solution - stop posting on the site - this Odum guy is just trying to keep up this blog - you can tell - one minute he agrees with the ones for it - the next minute he agrees with those against it - when a child lays in the floor throwing a fit - you ignore him. You don't condone behavior like this - a "pot stirrer" my grandmother used to say. This is my first and last post. This is the first time I ever remember our leaders ever even discussing something or letting us know the details of what they are going to vote on. I think it is a step in the right direction.
To all the firefighters and truly concerned citizens - stop posting on this site immediately. This Odum guy is just trying to be a "pot stirrer" and increase the bloggers.
Thank you 'lcff' which I can only imagine stands for Lamar County Fire Fighter.
Just for accuracy, my last name is spelled Odom as it clearly shows on all of my responses. Furthermore, I am not trying to be a pot stirrer unless there is some pot to be stirred. If not, then my harmless comments and questions would simply be overlooked. Clearly there is concern over this project and others see it as well.
I do appreciate the time you took to tell others not to take the time to post. And since this is not a blog by definition and no one here is blogging, I am not trying to increase bloggers.
Oh, and you don't have to submit the same comment twice because you want to change your author name. We got the point the first time.
By the way 'LCFF'...did your grandmother also tell you that when a pot isn't stirred whatever is in it tends to sit on the bottom, burn, and ultimately render the pot useless?
is this land where the arena is? If it is, well there goes another place for family's NOT to be able to go. I know a new firehouse is great but what happens when you take away family places and these kids have nowhere else to go? Maybe SPLOST can contribute to a new and BIGGER jail to hold these kids. Where is the SPLOST money they had to use to cover the arena? Maybe I've missed something!!!
I certainly agree. The citizens of Lamar County just don't realize what the department does for them... not to mention that most all of them are volunteers & sacrifice time away from their families to help the people of Lamar County. If they only knew...
Maybe you should all remember back when you all went to the polls and voted to renew the SPLOST and using the funds for an Administration Building, Fire, Recreation, Public Works. You need to go and look at the referendum from then and you would know. Especially if you VOTED yes or no. Now, if you really think about it back on July 1, 2007 the County had acquired the Ag property and the agreement was for it to be moved in 18 months and as you can see that has not happened, so that is where the property for the new station has been talked about for years.
You seem to be more confused than "concerned." You have no idea what really goes on at the Piedmont station. These guys work hard and go on every single call that they are needed at. Infact, they are usually the first ones to arrive. Chief Andrews has done a great job making sure that the firefighters are properly trained and prepared. A better job than anyone else could have done. Learn to appreciate and don't criticize, especially if you don't know the truth.
Near the sheriff's department. Do first architect drawing. He will show you architect picture as soon. And than construction. Bigger fire headquarters.
I want to go back to the beginning of this story.
I'm a Lamar county taxpayer, and have no problem with a new fire station.
But, and I truly don't know the answer to this, when taxpayer funded monies are being allocated for a building project, does a call for bids go out?
Since it's essentially my money being spent here, would it not serve my interests best to have local citizens grading and building the projects I've helped to purchase?
Really, I don't know the answer to this. I feel stupid even admitting this but maybe I'm not too old to learn.
Oh, and one other thing. Why does Lamar have a volunteer department? Do only large cities have the budget for a paid department?
#21 cats,
Yes large cities and big cities county. Wait you will see. He can show you architect. Look bigger fire headquarters.
No volunteer department. 3 years ago I hear fire chief want 9 fulltime positions. Chairman Jay Matthews said I have no problem going for 3. We are fooling ourselves if we think we can go for 9. The chairman noted applying for 9...
9 career firefighters can stay at the station 24/7.
Yes there was a request for 9 personnel but it got shot down due to funding. It's interesting to note that NFPA regulations specify the '2 in 2 out rule'. This means that firefighters entering a structure do so in teams of 2. No one works alone. This is a safety issue.
We could operate with 9 if the Fire Tax funds were used as they were intended instead of being diverted to other projects (illegally).
The idea of 9 firefighters staying at the station 24/7 is misleading. There would only be 3 firefighters on duty at a time working 24 on / 48 off shifts. This would allow for the safety that they desperately need.
What do you mean fire tax? Yes 9 firefighters staying at the station 24/7. Yes 3, 3 and 3 firefighters on duty, fire chief said soon. We can go for 18 firefighters in 2014.
Georgia state laws do require certain commercial structures do be designed by registered Architects all depending on size ,use ,and type of construction
Some citys and or counties do bypass these laws
and not require a registered Architect as has been proven by more than one structure existing in Barnesville/Lamar County
Georgia state law also requires that the building be constructed by a state licensed commercial contractor
My original comment was incomplete...It was supposed to say, Thanks to "Concerned" and other rude comments concerning the 3 "highly trained and dedicated" Lamar County Firefighters at Piedmont Station, they have "voluntarily" left. Many of the residents of this area had shown their appreciation to these guys for being nearby. Unfortunately, some local ciizens complained...hopefully they will never need emergency assistance!!
Sorry,my comment was incomplete...I was saying, Thanks to "Concerned" and other rude comments made about certain firefighters, the three "highly trained and very dedicated" Lamar County Firefighters have "voluntarily" left the Piedmont Fire Station. Being the true firefighters they are, they will continue to do their best to serve Lamar County. It is a shame they were condemned by citizens who really may need them one day...tsk, tsk!!
Tisk, Tisk Momma (I like that you took a little something from my earlier post)...you must just be "concerned" that one those boys might move back in with you instead of living on someone else's dime. If you really want to see someone pitch a fit, steal from a theif :-)

You know what "informed" I hope you and the future "oustesd" George Brown need to call the firefighters one day to help you. You are both so ignorant and have your heads under a rock - how dare you suggest these "volunteers" are taking something from the taxpayers!!!!!!!!! I hope that your house burns completely to the ground but it probably won't because the "taxpayer rip off volunteers" will probably save your sorry %$#!!
I am a close friend of the firefighters of the Piedmont Station. I know from several visitations to the station that there aren't any alleged "parties" taking place and/or "sleep-overs." I do not appreciate anyone undermining the dedication, certification and professionalism that these boys portray. #58 "one of those friends" is right. The curfew at Station 5 is 10:30 PM. No exceptions. I know first hand because I have also abided by this rule. Volunteer firefighters are not "compensated" by living "rent-free." Yes, our tax money may pay for it, but what about all of the hard work and dedication that all of the firefighters do for our community?? Has that been forgotten?? I think by allowing firefighters a place to stay is a way for our community to show their appreciation whether rent free or not. I agree with #56 Momma; I know that the boys will still show their true dedication and continue their service to Lamar County. I certainly hope that you negative bloggers will think about that the next time (if any at all) you might be in a any accident or a burning building. Thank you firefighters for all that you do! I love you guys!

I know hard time. I know obama bad. I talk to Nancy Thrash, Jay Matthews, Jimmy Hearn, Wayne Patterson and George Brown. Any accident or a burning building or medical?, you must pay for it.

Vote (pick 4). Volunteer firefighters (sick call, holiday or vacation):

However, I have family in the Lamar Fire Dept. and hear of calls being cancelled all the time, it's very common.
I get as frustrated as the next by the idiotic comments that are often left on these open forums and I find them very discouraging.
Thank you for your continued readership and your comments. They are much appreciated as is the Fire Dept. which your husband represents.
Yes large cities and big cities county. Wait you will see. He can show you architect. Look bigger fire headquarters.
No volunteer department. 3 years ago I hear fire chief want 9 fulltime positions. Chairman Jay Matthews said I have no problem going for 3. We are fooling ourselves if we think we can go for 9. The chairman noted applying for 9...
9 career firefighters can stay at the station 24/7.
Some citys and or counties do bypass these laws
and not require a registered Architect as has been proven by more than one structure existing in Barnesville/Lamar County
Georgia state law also requires that the building be constructed by a state licensed commercial contractor
Three rookies? Sorry momma. Not at the piedmont fire station 24/7. Josh was wrong and the twins too. Hang out with friends like "free rent".
