After six years of holding the line, the Lamar County board of education is expected to raise the millage rate this year from 16.576 to 18 mills, bringing in an extra $625,000. This will help fund the 2013-14 school year.

Well, if our taxes are going up then I think the school board can stop using our tax dollars to go on their little trips to Savannah for 'conference' or whatever they call it. They can just get the cliff's notes and stay their behinds at home.
A message to Supt. Truby......Since everyone else has had to tighten their belts and budgets, how about teachers and administrators doing their part with a 5% across the board pay cut ???? Address that Mr. Truby, as a christian that would be the right thing to do if you were a "servant" of God, and a public servant payed by the people and for the people. You Talk the talk, now walk the walk. There are many folks hurting who can barely get by to pay their taxes and stay in their homes on a year to year basis. You are effectively pushing them out of their homes. Is that the Christian way ?
Not in my book.
I want to congratulate Dr. Truby for his remarkable governance during this difficult economic time. His approach to the budget has masterfully balanced the needs of all of the stakeholders in the county.
We all are making sacrifices, and in the Christian spirit, I do not mind paying a little more in taxes to benefit my neighbors' children. Education expenditures are a long-term investment in the financial well-being of the community. All citizens benefit from an educated populace, if for no other reason than more highly educated people tend to earn more, which in turn results in higher tax revenues.
The county is lucky, quite frankly, to have Dr. Truby's stewardship.
I, too, think highly of Dr. Truby, but that has nothing to do with the taxation issue right now. He has done a good job and the schools are better than before he came. But, I want to say publicly that our household cannot afford more taxes. Period. That has nothing to do with liking or disliking Dr. Truby.
Well said, Dr. Raynie, our schools system has improved markedly since Dr. Truby has been at the helm. Generally speaking, it's a good idea for taxpayers to try to make it to a couple of meetings a year of the BOE. Dr. Truby and the rest of the board are always willing to answer and fully explain any questions in a reasonable environment.
Incidentally, the way to keep our land taxes lower is to encourage business growth in a community. Shop inside your county of residence. "Just sayin'"
I think Dr Truby has done a good job; but, he makes as much as the mayor of Atlanta and more than the majority of Supers in the state. We have four schools. We really can't afford any more raises for the over 100k crowd. If there was a teacher or staff pay increase, I would be glad to pay a tax increase. I can see Dr T. giving himself or one of his buddies another 38k raise. It's time for the high paid ones to take a hit and not the lowest paid that work really hard and do the majority of the work. You can go online and see the salaries of any state worker.
There are many in this county who cannot afford more and more taxation. It comes from every place imaginable... national, state, county, schools... and it is reaching the point where people are not able to pay. Then what? Lose homes, lose more tax base for people going broke? There is much to consider before raising any taxes and I am surprised that this is not being talked about by more than a very few on this thread.
