Jessica Mundy of Lamar County has been award $40 million after winning a suit she brought against Ford Motor Co. and Legacy Ford in McDonough. Mundy alleged a faulty transmission in her Ford Explorer caused the vehicle to jump out of park and run over her.

Yea, my kids say crap all the time about suing. Mom you would have let him hit you and you could have got a lot of money. I have to snap them back into reality then. My heath and my kids are more important to me then a 2 to 5 yr law suit that would probably make me insane by the end of the trail!! I want to live my life in peace. Thank-you, Thank-you very much!!

why can't his family have some privacy? It's not everyone's business how much $ she won. You also have to take into account how much medical bills she probably has related to this accident. Money doesn't fix everything & certainly won't bring the person she was before the accident back... Have some compassion!

I always wonder if the person actually is able to collect on a judgement like this, or will Ford's lawyers tie this up with appeals for years and years.
I don't know if the money is the issue here. I do know that if you lose your health, you don't have much.

Of course the lawyers will appeal. She likely won't see any money for quite sometime. Then, her lawyer will get his 1/3 plus costs, then her medical bills will have to be paid, etc. It's not like $40 million is just going to drop into her bank account. Hopefully, one day she'll see about half the amount the jury saw fit to give her.

"Park" was never intended to substitute for a parking brake. Every owner's manual I've read warns operators to not depend on Park to hold a vehicle.

I took a few automatic transmissions apart and I was amazed at how small the parking pawl was. It's a "cog" that has a spring loaded bar pushing it into a gear.

When I was a teenager my buds and I used to take cars and go 50 or 60 and throw them into park. All that happens is the pawl won't slide into the gear, so it makes a high pitched noise. If you jam the brakes and lock the rear wheels it will slide into park but pop right back out.

Borrow a friend's car and try it and see.

Let me see if I can understand the logic. Forty million is too much to compensate a peson who receives a lifetime disability at the age of 23 due to the negligence of multi billion dollar auto executives. Thirty thousand dollars a year is too much to pay law enforcements officers to be shot, spit on, punched or cussed out. Seventy five million dollars plus benefits is okay to pay someone to run with a football, hit a baseball with a bat, hit a golf ball, jump in a cart, drive to where the ball landed and hit it again, or drive a car real fast around a track. Perhaps it is because society is more interested in being entertained than being protected or compensated for a lifetime of pain and suffering. That is someone else's pain and suffering.

Were did it say she has a lifetime of disability? In fact id dose not say how bad she was hurt. Did she get put in a wheel chair or did she just get a scrape on her elbow?

I don't know about her car but when I take my car out of park it barley goes 5 mph.

Now if it rolled down hill before hitting her, I could see it doing some damage.

Problem is I don't know, so we can't tell if $40 million is worth it or not.

According to the paper she put her car into park and walked in front of her car to put mail into a mail box when the car jumped out of gear and ran her over.

It says the vehicle fractured her spine and has been unable to work since the accident.

It dose not say what condition she is in now.

Now I can see getting a large sum of money if you are unable to work.

Her husband was likely compensated for the loss of consortium, or in other words, the loss of having the "full benefit" of his wife due to her injury/disability

some of you are very self centered people that need to geow up and look at the situation at every angel and then thing what if it was you. what would you have done..where would yoube now..and how you would feel if you went from being able to do whatever you want to not being able to do much of anything for yourself or your fmaily...and could not work a job because of the accident..so before you start making statements about this lady and what you think she should or should not have gotten...just set back and think about if it where YOU! Ford didn't take any bail out money and this information should have never been put out. It isn't anyone’s business what she was awarded, and for what reasons. This is nothing but an invasion of privacy.

The wealth does need to be shared. We can't give all the tax cuts and benefits to the people earning the big bux. Trickle down does not work, it is a dumb idea.

Distorting the concept that MIDDLE CLASS Americans deserve a shot at a job that pays an affordable living, deserve the same tax breaks and the same consideration in government decisions as the wealthy is not a bad idea...because MOST taxes are paid by the middle class.

Your problem is you are listening to the fat drugged-up gasbags like Rush or the million dollar babes like Sean whining and complaining because they will lose some of the big tax breaks they have received.

We need to get back to the America we had BEFORE trickle down and NAFTA and other bad trade agreements trickled on the middle class.

I am a personal friend of Ms. Mundy and i can tell you that after all is said and done, she will not get even close to a fraction of that money. And to anyone pondering her "condition and/or injuries, she is paralized and has many medical conditions related to the accident. Despite the wheelchair, she is one of the strongest women I have ever met. She takes care of her child, husband, and home better than most women do (that don't have a diability). Beyond that, she also volunteers at Shepard Spine Clinic helping others who are at the beginning stages of their disabilty. When you go to bed tonight, you better pray that your parents, grandparents, spouse, child or anyone else you care about is not the next one to get hurt by something an auto maker knew about but avoided fixing to save the almighty dollar. It is pathetic that you would dare judge. Her yearly medical expenses per year far exceed what most would make annually, yet you expect her to live on a disabilty check. WHATEVER!!!! She keeps a positive attitude and keeps telling herself that it could have been much worse. For one second, imagine going to the grocery store. Unloading a wheelchair and assembling it, trying to get products off of shelves that are out of reach because of being wheelchair bound, loading then unloading groceries, putting them up and all the while taking care of a small child in the store. She makes every attempt to be independent yet she is still judged by those of you who don't know her, don't know the terms of the settlement, don't she all the extra effort it takes her to do the small things that the rest of us do without thinking about it. She knows it could be worse but she knows she was given the chance to see her child grow up and live a life with her husband. She doesn't give up just because it is hard but she does want to make a difference by making the auto industry make quality products that are safe. Again, she will not get near the amount that was quoted as the entire settlement. If what she ends up with lasts her until retirement age (because of enormous medical expences) I will be shocked. And maybe...just mabye her husband deserves it because of time he has had to take off work and the sinceless lose of the ability to do meaningful things with her and their child. I really really hope you can't sleep tonight because of guilt about the horrible comments you made. This type of stuff is why this county is going to hell. Keep judging. One day, you may find yourself regretting your comments. Noone is immune to accidents...not even YOU. Life happens and she is dealing with it. Would you be that strong?
Whoever you are that said you were gonna run over yourself - you really are stupid I guess. If money is worth doing something on purpose like that, well, I gues you might just deserve all the pain that comes with it. I personally don't want to feel a tire crushing me and the spend months in a hospital having surgeries, recoving and then learnig how to do almost everything that is required in everyday life all over again.
If you still have a problem with the suit, I would like you to imagine this---- You or one of your loved ones is in front of or behind a parked vehicle that belongs to someone else, then with no warning the vehicle pops out of park and the next thing you know, there is a tire crushing you or your loved one. Now, even if the emer. brake is your issue with this then I guess my question is how do you know if someone elses vehicle is safe to be near. Kinda leaves you wondering doesn't it? If it doesn't, you are a heartless person who doesn't truly care about anyone at all nor have a conscience.

I definitely don't begrudge her that settlement.I think what some people fail to realize is that $40 million is a drop in the bucket if you at what the victim has to deal with.

I'm sure Mrs. Mundy would gladly trade out that $40 million if she could have her life back the way it was before the accident. I myself am not of fan of frivolous lawsuits, but I do not feel that her lawsuit was frivolous.
